SPOTLIGHT ON SEGUIN By making such a thoughtful commitment, the Napolitans have become charter members of Seguin’s esteemed Edouard Séguin Society. The Soci- ety is reserved for people who have included Seguin Services in their will or as a beneficiary of any other planned giving activity. Dr. Jim Napolitan is a clinical psychologist who has served many individu- als both with and without developmental disabilities over the years. Dr. Sandra Napolitan had an active career as a Social Worker. As you might imagine based on their professions, the Napolitans have a strong desire to give to others and especially to those in need. In addition, Jim has utilized his financial acumen since he acquired his seat in 1980 on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, where he has had a successful career in managing investments. Nearly a decade ago, at the invitation of Seguin President & CEO John Voit, Jim visited Seguin. He was especially impressed with the quality of care and innovative services that Seguin provided. Subsequently in July 2002, Jim was honored to join the Board of Directors of Seguin Services. He has faith- fully and effectively served on the Board Finance Committee as well as the Investment Subcommittee. As the years have passed, the Napolitans have given substantially of their time, talents and treasure to Seguin. Their desire to help sustain Seguin’s future success has become a major component of their philanthropic in- tentions. As a result, as they made their estate plans this spring, they de- cided to give a large portion of their estate to provide for the children and adults served by Seguin Services. As Jim states, “In the future, I only hope that Seguin is still as well run as it is today and continuing on its critical mission. In that case, the funds left will be well utilized.” In addition to their wish to support Seguin, they would like to spur other donors to make similar commitments to support Seguin now and in the future through their charitable gift planning. Seguin is an organization that leads its peers in innovation and quality care to people with disabili- ties. At the same time, funding from the State of Illinois is in jeopardy, and Seguin needs support from its Friends to ensure a bright future for the persons served by Seguin. Presidents’ Cornerwith Joseph o. Pedersen, Board President and John Voit, President & CEo

As a result of the current economic environment, Seguin faces multiple challenges—perhaps the most challenging situation we have witnessed since Seguin’s inception. At the same time we are heartened by the robust and positive spirit of the entire Seguin com-munity, from persons served to their families, from Seguin staff to the Seguin Board of Directors, from Seguin foster parents to the many Friends of Seguin who donate their time and treasure to the Seguin cause. We are a community…a community of people committed to continuing our innovative ways to meet the needs of children and adults with disabilities and other special needs.

In the past year Seguin constructed a new strategic plan to guide our pacesetting agency’s future direction through 2015. At the same time we had the chance to take stock of what we had accomplished in the past five years, including the last two during which our nation has endured seemingly insurmountable difficulties. We can proudly proclaim some wonderful achievements, which you can view on the opposite page.

Not satisfied to rest on our laurels, Seguin has staked out bold new goals for our newly minted Strategic Plan. With the input of various key stakeholders within the Seguin community, we devised directions and strategies to drive our efforts forward over the next five years. The major directions associated with this Plan are highlighted below.

We cannot achieve these commendable goals, however, without the ongoing and generous support of our many “Friends of Seguin”. We face diminishing reliance on governmental funding, and increasing competition for discretionary private dollars. So on behalf of Seguin we ask each of you to do all you can to help us fulfill our goals, and keep alive and strong our enduring mission:

To integrate, enrich and empower people with disabilities and other special needs, so they can be productive, valued members of society.

Seguin Services Penguins have proudly brought home the silver medal after competing in the Special Olympics Illinois State Basketball Tournament. The Penguins were among 1500 athletes at the tournament held March 12-13, 2011 in Horton Fieldhouse at Illinois State University in Normal and Shirk Center at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington. They played two hard fought games, defeating Helping Hand Center of Countryside 58-38, then losing the championship game to Kids are Kids of Taylorville by a score of 45-35. Winning their first game was exhilarating but their spirits were not dampened when they lost. Team members could be heard saying, “Good job! We’ll be back next year!”

Seguin’s team was led by an outstanding all-volunteer coaching team, including Head Coach Lovie Twine, Assistant Coach Lawrence Baldwin and Team Coordinator Debra Jargstorf. The Silver Medal Penguins Team includes Michael Arscott, Alexander Brunet, Michael Butler, Travis Collins, Mary Cornejo, Gary Evans, Joe Farkaschek, Marvin Jones, Leif Pavlicek, and Leon Turner. Awards for sportsmanship were also given at the Special Olympics tournament, with Joe Farkaschek of Seguin winning the coveted ron Kinsley Spirit of the Games award for his exceptional sportsman-like conduct. The team’s growth in abilities and teamwork were notable on the court, and they hope to repeat their success next year and beyond.

Seguin Services, a nonprofit agency serving people with devel-opmental disabilities, strives to integrate, enrich and empower the lives of people with disabilities and other special needs. Special Olympics Illinois offers training and competition in 19 sports for nearly 21,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities empowering them to realize their full potential in sports and in life. Seguin sees its mission and the mission of Special Olympics Illinois as a great match!

Seguin Services welcomed Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and Cook County Commissioner Jeffrey Tobolski (16th District) to Seguin’s Carr Center in March. President

Preckwinkle and Commissioner Tobolski toured the entire Seguin program complex, including the Portillo’s Learning Kitchen, Seguin classrooms and other recently renovated day program space in the Carr Center. The two newly elected County officials also visited Seguin Gardens & Gifts as well as Seguin Auto Center. Seguin was able to show how Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) issued through the County have benefited persons with disabilities served by Seguin.

During the visit Seguin noted to President Preckwinkle that the agency has a $750,000 annual capital budget, and that CDBG grants are vital to Seguin, as the State of Illinois does not reimburse agencies for capital needs as part of their funding for services. In short, the $250,000 to $300,000 in CDBG funding that Seguin receives annually from various local governmental sources including Cook County is crucial to the accessibility, safety and security of Seguin homes. These funds are used for major capital improvements to its main program spaces and to its 60 group homes where 220 people with developmental disabilities reside—and where Seguin provides services at less than half the cost for similar services at large state institutions.

The visit by President Preckwinkle and Commissioner Tobolski, according to John Voit, President and CEO for Seguin, shows

On March 3, 2011 the State of Illinois Speaker of the House Michael Madigan and the Illinois House of representatives honored the great friend of Seguin and former Speaker of the House, Lee Daniels. Speaker Daniels was honored for his many years of past service to the State of Illinois at the unveiling of his permanent portrait on display at the Illinois Capitol.

The Honorable Lee Daniels was elected to serve sixteen terms in the Illinois General Assembly as a State representative from Du Page County, from January 1975 to January 2007. Daniels’ leadership in the General Assembly and as Speaker of the House was marked by path-breaking achievements in Illinois history in many areas. Foremost among his accomplishments was the development of statewide programs to help persons with devel-opmental disabilities that received nationwide honor and recognition. Daniels’ daughter Laurie has a developmental disability, fur-ther spurring him to advocate forcefully and

effectively to insure that needs of people with disabilities would be met in the State of Illinois.

At the unveiling Daniels spoke eloquently of his years of service to the people of Illinois, while also urging elected officials to continue and to expand support for individuals with developmental disabilities. “The legitimate object of government is to do for the community of people, whatever they need to have done, but cannot do for themselves in their separate and individual capacities.” He added, “I know firsthand what it means to help people who are our most vulnerable citizens ... suffering from a disability of no choice of their own. . . . I implore you and ask you to not forget the community, as Abraham Lincoln observed, that cannot do for themselves, but depend on your help.”

Thank you Lee Daniels for all you have done and continue to do for people with disabilities and for Seguin Services!

Markita and Her GardenBy Phil gibboney, LifeMyway Contributor

Markita has been thinking about her future and has some plans that go considerably beyond what she is

doing today.

In a recent LifeMyWay.com interview at Seguin Gardens & Gifts, Markita discussed her ambi-tions for work and her dreams for what might lie ahead. She works four days each week in the newly established retail store.

Markita works primarily in the greenhouse section where she helps cultivate plants and vegetables. “I do transplanting, composting, mixing soil…I wash pots, water the plants and organize them,” she stated with a note of pride in her voice. Outside the greenhouse she plants vegetables in two vegetable gardens. “I plant ba-sil, onions, tomatoes, beets, mustard greens and squash. I eat the beets and mustard greens,” she also revealed. When asked what she likes best about the gardening experience, the first item on her list besides the practical tasks of growing plants was “working with my co-workers. We work as a team.”

Markita enjoys working with others and her greenhouse duties so much that she anticipates doing this for a long time. In fact, the work itself reflects part of one of her life’s objectives: to start a business. The impact of working in the garden shop has been so signifi-cant that the business she now envisions for her-self is to someday “own my own greenhouse,” she says calmly and with a look of satisfaction. Additionally, now that Markita has a steady job that she truly enjoys, she also been thinking about her future. Other firm life dreams for her

include some things outside the world of work. “I want to get married, have six children and get a bigger house,” Markita related with a thoughtful sense of purpose.

It seems that gardening, with its associated tasks agrees very well with Markita. She has acquired in a relatively short time, not only meaningful vocational skills, but also more social and gen-eral life skills according to Seguin staff mem-bers who work with her. Markita clearly bene-fits from the gardening experiences perhaps in a way that only those do who nurture plants and vegetables all along the journey from germina-

tion to maturity. As someone once aptly said, “As the garden grows, so does the gardener.”

Her supervisor indicates that Markita gets along with everyone, is quick to learn, has a lot of skills, does everything with energy and now knows almost everything about how the greenhouse is supposed to work. Markita’s letter of reference is practically written. So if you happen to be in the Cicero area, and you really like hearty plants, beautiful flowers and happy, knowledgeable people, stop by to see Markita and all the things that she is growing.
