As we go to presswith this issue,

the Paralympics being held inLondon are drawing to a close.Whilst athletics in general maynot be everybody’s “cup of tea”as a spectator sport, one cannotdeny the sheer scale of thecompetitors’ personalachievements. What betterplace from which to drawinspiration for our own lives?

The Editor

Page 6: SpotLight on Buckie and Keith

I would like to start today with my

favourite passage of Scripture, and

that is John 3:16, “For God so loved

the world, that He gave His only Son,

that whoever believes in Him shall not

perish but have eternal life”.

Some people, maybe you are one,

thinks that if God exists, then there

would be no bad things in the world,

and everything would be wonderful.

Because that obviously isn’t the case,

their conclusion is, then, that God

does not exist.

But this doesn’t take into account

mankind’s propensity to do bad things

to each other.

If a deranged person decides to walk

into a school with a gun, or goes to a

remote island where a young group

are holding their annual camp, and

start shooting and killing people, why

is God blamed for that? Or why is His

existence questioned?

No, the fact is, God does exist, and

He loves the people of the world so

much, that He sacrificed His Son for

each and every one of us. Could any

of us give up our son or daughter for

somebody else? I doubt it.

But there is a condition to receiving

the eternal life spoken about in the

verse above. We are to believe in Him

(Jesus) so as not to perish. The word

‘believe’ means so much more than

just to acknowledge that Jesus lived

on earth as a man 2000 years ago; it

means to exercise belief in; to credit

upon the authority or testimony of an-

other; to be persuaded of the truth of,

upon evidence furnished by reasons,

arguments, and deductions of the

mind, or by circumstances other than

personal knowledge; to regard or ac-

cept as true; to place confidence in; to

think; to consider; as, to believe a per-

son, a statement, or a doctrine.

In plain language, it means to hand

over our very lives to Him. To let Him

govern our thoughts and deeds, and

to agree to abide by His rules, and not

our own. The Bible calls that ‘faith’. If

everybody did that, then there would

be no bad in the world, but that is an

impossible dream.

God loves even those who commit

these heinous crimes, but He will hold

them accountable for what they have

done, as He will hold us all account-

able for what we do as individuals.

My prayer is that everybody who

reads this article would turn to God

and trust Him and to ask Him to come

into their lives and to live for Him.

I could not consider going back to the

life I lived before I became a Christian

God is good, and only good.

Pastor John Coppard.

Riverside Christian Church,

Buckie.

POLICE MATTERSSince the last meeting there have been 42recorded crimes:-9 dishonesty crimes including theft ofdiesel,7 road traffic offences,1 drink driver was detected. The others resulted from anti social drivingpatrols by traffic officers. The Royal Hotel is to receive a visit from PCRay Walker and the LicensingStandards Officer to address ongoing con-cerns. Reports of youngsters who think it’sfunny to lie on the A96. People from otherareas are coming to the Boom – Box ses-sions. There have been reports of in-creased vandalism when these events arebeing held.Constable Ian Ralston has secured fundingof £250 to develop a football tournament. This year`s event has already taken place– money will go towards next year`s tour-nament.Keith Music Festival and Tractor Pullingevents went without incident.A CC has received a complaint from amember of the public regarding the recentevent held at the Longmore Hall. The com-plaint was that the event was late in finish-ing and the food operator being allowed toserve food. Sergeant Black is looking intothis. GC replied that the Longmore Hallwould have had the appropriate license torun the event.Patrols have been made on the school carpark – no offences have been detected.Residents living adjacent to the golf clubpraised the police for showing an in-creased presence after complaints of vehi-cles driving too fast in the road from golfclub. JM received complaints from resi-dents on Land Street about the speed andvolume of traffic. There have been a fewminor accidents and near misses, andthere are concerns that a child may gethurt. Speed bumps, traffic counting, speedstrips and smiley face signs were all sug-gestions to calm the traffic. GC thought thebest measure was to reintroduce the Smi-ley face sign – when you approach the signit tells you the speed you are doing. JMalso said it was a worry that there was nocrossing patrol at St Thomas primaryschool.ACTION –TR contact roads.

4. PRESENTATIONTracey Rae the Community Council LiaisonOfficer gave a presentation asfollows:-Consistent membership has been retainedthroughout the term of office – 6 membersand 4 vacancies. The term started in Octo-ber 2009 and runs until October 2013.Meetings have been held regularly andhave been well attended. There have been a number of good initia-tives from Keith Community Council andsub-groups formed including the XmasLights group. There is no doubt that ‘Community’ is at theheart of Keith Community Council with theChristmas Extravaganza a very successfulevent and the more recent huge success of‘Haud ER Gaun’. Being a quine with Keithroots I’ve had to translate this title to manya person!Successful partnership working with otherGroups and Organisations in the Commu-nity leads to the success of your group andyou can’t underestimate the work you aredoing and the successes you are achiev-ing, not only with The Moray Council, butwith other organisations e.g. Bear Scot-land.There has been excellent self promotion ofKeith Community Council and an integralpart of this has been the relationship withThe Banffshire Herald – you are very luckyto have the regular attendance and input ofEsther.A regular stream of operational issues arebeing raised and dealt with and it’s veryeasy to write off the amount you do be-cause you all do it automatically! Meetingsare also regularly attended by the local Po-lice and the dedicated Elected membersyou have in this ward.I regularly flag up the good practice in KeithCC of individual portfolio’s – it allows eachCommunity Council to have responsibilityin an area of interest and allows their skillsand confidence levels to develop – an ex-cellent piece of best practice that I may wellshowcase for future promotional material. There has been a recent concern regardingthe style of Minutes – I must stress the Min-utes have always been produced to a morethan acceptable standard. However, the concerns have been sympa-thetically considered by Office Bearers

and a new style is being introduced. I hopeyou all lend your support to yourMinute Secretary during this period of tran-sition.There is no question that a successfulCommunity Council requires a strong andmotivating person at the helm and I am de-lighted that Jane has taken on the Chair ofKeith CC – her friendly and inclusive man-ner makes visitors and Community Coun-cillors feel at ease at the meetings.Keith Community Council are doing reallywell, believe me you are! But you can al-ways do better. If there is any desire fortraining, either collectively or as an individ-ual, please let me know and I can liaise withmy colleague in the Community SupportUnit to see what we can do. Also if there areany projects or initiatives you want to getinvolved with in the area but are concernedit may just be ‘too big’, or don’t know whereto start, please speak to me and again I cansee what resources we have to assist you.JM thanked Tracey for her presentation.

5. MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUSMINUTESCL has tried to contact Ralph at BEAR – hehas been unsuccessful. The entrance toKeith at Brig O’Haughs is still very over-grown and grass needs cutting. The Huntlyside of Keith has been kept much tidier. JMsuggested that there be nice plants that areeasily maintained be planted at the BrigO’Haughs side and that KCC could fundthese as running costs. A plaque could beput in to say that KCC were funding thisproject; a decision will be made at the nextmeeting. GC saidthat the signs on entering Keith that werevery dirty were cleaned by BEAR. Den carpark was reported by JM, and CaravanPark and Tartan Museum were still dis-played on A96.ACTIONS – JM to report again.Change of minutes – SH and JM liased ata meeting with Linda Adams with regard tothe new format of the minutes.Dog mess – Donna Jamieson has beenconsulted.

Parliament Blog“ ”it has been a busy summer period and

it seems to have flown in! having two

up the time and it was great to get some

We spent a few days in Wales this year

this year, was a bit changeable the Welsh welcome for

neighbours from the north more than made up for it!

nearer to home i recently had the pleasure of being at

the opening of northern oils new headquarters at Lint-

northern oils are really going from strength to strength.

as many of you will probably have spot-

fence Spokesperson, recently put

forward new defence policy proposals,

which are set to be debated later this

month at the SnP’s annual national

Conference.

it has been interesting seeing the reaction from some parts

of the media who have talked about rebellion and deep splits.

if we didn’t debate challenging issues there would of course

be headlines saying we weren’t prepared to face up to those

challenges!

at the end of the day we will have a robust debate, agree a

position with a vote and move on. We will still speak to each

other - indeed we haven’t stopped speaking to each other -

and there will be other challenging issues to deal with. a good

number of constituents in Moray have contacted me on this

issue and i am grateful for the many considered responses

covering both sides of the debate.

recipe

Chef’sConfidential

Kris McKie, The Royal Hotel, Elgin

Crab Fritters andSweet Chilli Sauce.

A simple starter that often goes on our specials board

this month as local crab is available.

100g butter

150ml water

150g plain flour (sifted)

A pinch of sea salt

1 egg and 1 yolk (beaten)

150g crab meat

1 tspn chopped chives or parsley

Method

1) Bring water to boil in a saucepan. Add butter and salt.

When butter has melted, beat in flour to form smooth paste.

Beat for 2/3 minutes over a low heat.

2) Chill pastry in a bowl for 20/30 minutes.

3) When cool, beat in egg. Mix well.

4) Fold in crab meat and chives. Season with black pepper

to taste.

5) Using a teaspoon, drop crab mix into hot oil. Cook for

2/3 minutes.

Serve fritters with dressed salad, lemon, and sweet

chilli sauce.

Enjoy!

Dreamingof...

One of the most rapidly expanding sectors of the Travel Industry is taking a cruise. It can be described as living in a luxury hotel which moves from destination to destination and there is no need to pack or unpack your suitcases more than once!

The cruise market has seen steady growth, driven by innovation and the quality of the experience. There are large capacity increases being launched all the time, so what might have seemed like a very exclusive mode of transport historically has become much more available to the seasoned holidaymakers.

There is a perception that going on a cruise is very formal and only for the older generation, but that is changing. The average age of people going on a cruise comes down each year and ships are coming into service to cater for different needs. Some prefer to do a Fly Cruise, where you join the ship in an already exotic or interesting destination. Some prefer a Fly and Stay, where they join the ship and before or after their cruise they spend some time in that country. Some prefer to depart and return to a home port, negating the need to fly at all.

Pricing might sometimes seem high but remember that covers all your meals, entertainment and soft drinks – the only extras you are likely to run up are for alcoholic drinks and flutters on the gaming tables, if that is what takes your fancy.

Imagine spending a day in an interesting European city, retiring to the ship for dinner and a good night's sleep, then waking up in the morning in another fascinating destination. Wonderful!

A few months ago I was sitting at my desk in the room at the front of the house I use as an office, when my concentration was broken by a barely audible little song. I looked around the room, there was a Robin sitting on the back of a chair a metre away. The song was repeated and I was looked at very directly. I opened the window but the robin refused to move, let alone fly out. As I went out of my office across the hall into the sitting room, the Robin followed, cocked its head on one side and repeated the song, this time sitting on the television. I knew what the Robin wanted.

To get to my office you come in the back door, through the kitchen, along the front hall and turn left. This is a route the Robin knows well and uses when the back door is open and I need “training”. Like many people, we have bird feeders in the garden and during the late Spring and early Summer they seem to be the main source of food for the local breeding House sparrows who consume nearly a kilo of food a day. Last Winter we started to feed mealworms, the Black birds and Robins really seemed to appreciate this. A couple of Robins started to watch for signs of us coming out of the house. They would make it very clear that they wanted more meal worms, and as time went on they became quite happy to eat these from the hand.

This Spring two pairs of Robins nested in the garden and our “training” was stepped up a gear, I guess by the male birds who were feeding their mates sitting on eggs. If there were no meal worms out the Robins would look directly through the window into the house, and continue to watch us until we put out more mealworms.

Back in May we spent a couple of weeks in the Cairngorms, and while we were away our neighbour checked the garden and filled the bird feeders. On returning I noticed a small pile of bird droppings on the door step. I thought this was a little odd until I surmised that a Robin had spent a lot of time sitting on the back door handle waiting for someone to come out and feed him.

Over the past months the demand from the Robins has reduced, the young have left the hedge and I assume they are looking after themselves. However, the male birds seem to be feeding the females again, perhaps they have laid more eggs. I am looking forward to my work being interrupted again in a couple of weeks and for my “training” to be resumed.

In the meantime, the local starlings have discovered the mealworms and the Blackbirds nesting in the clematis on top of our oil tank are feeding them to their young. No chance of stopping our regular mealworm order!

Briefly, and on more serious note, wild birds eat all year round and feeding them in the Winter can really help them through difficult cold spells.
