When my husband, Reverend Ranald, wasdiagnosed with lung cancer in March (atumour in one lung), the news gave us quite ashock. Thereafter, with each scan, the newsalways got worse. The cancer was in bothlungs and in the lymph gland in the centre ofhis chest. This is his fourth primary cancer, histhird having been dealt with only in January ofthis year.Stoically, he began his treatment with the

equivalent of one month’s chemotherapy inone day! And he endured double sessions ofradiotherapy on a daily basis, travelling in andout of Aberdeen. During one session, he toldthe staff that he had cravings to eat mangosand Prosciutto ham to try to ward off his violentmorning sickness. “Indeed,” said Ranald to theradiographers, “I think that my diagnosis iswrong. I don’t have cancer, I’m pregnant! I justhaven’t worked out yet how to tell my wife whothe father is!” His sense of humour keeps himgoing!During Ranald’s current illness, it has been

amazing to see the efforts of not only those inour own congregation, but also those in ourneighbouring churches, in the community, andeven further afield in Moray Presbytery, tosupport us in every way they can. At the

beginning of June, some people asked if wecould have a healing service primarily forRanald, but also for others in his condition, asthey wanted to help but didn’t know how to.When I told Ranald that a healing service hadbeen requested for him, his response was,“But how do you think I’ll feel if nobody turnsup?” Amazingly, notwithstanding little publicity, some two hundred people turned up fromDallas to Banchory! The passage which inspired us that evening

was Mark chapter two verses one to fourteen:“They came, bringing to Jesus a paralyticcarried by four men. And when they could notget near him because of the crowd, theyremoved the roof above him; and when theyhad made an opening they let down the palleton which the paralytic lay. And when Jesussaw their faith, he said, “My child, your sins areforgiven.”” Let’s look at this more closely. When these

four men couldn’t get close to Jesus with theirfriend, they didn’t give up. Indeed, they were“roofcrashers”! Having struggled to carry theman up the outside stairs, they used their barehands to dig through the clay and to force thesticks apart until, covered in dirt and utterlyexhausted, they used that last bit of energy to

lower their friend on his mat right to the feet ofJesus.

Mark says literally at this point, “Theyunroofed the roof and having dug it out, letdown the pallet on which the man lay.” Thewords “dug out” and “let the man down on apallet” exactly describe what happens at aJewish burial. In addition, when the paralyticsprings up after his healing at the command ofJesus to rise, the word used by Mark is thesame as “to resurrect”.

The role of the friends in this event callsattention to the importance that communitycan have in healing and regeneration. Andnote, the text says that Jesus recognised theirfaith in him, likewise that of the paralytic whichwas demonstrated by his great desire to getnear to Jesus. From this account in Mark’sGospel, we see that God can use our act of willto care and to work for others. So let us keepon struggling to bring all those in ourcommunity to Jesus, for God will use our act ofwill in doing so to care and to heal our lovedones and ourselves, even though that may bein eternal life.

I was a very proud father recentlywhen I had the pleasure of watchingmy eldest son play in his first schoolfootball tournament with West EndPrimary School. It was a great family

day out and it was great to see parents and kidscoming together from various Moray schools. Manythanks to the organisers, volunteers and others whomake these events such a success. It is a greatoutlet for kids in the evenings and weekends andreleases to burn off some energy and perhapscreate some football stars of the future!

It's always nice to bump intoMoray folk far away from home. At a recent conference in Vienna, Imet up by chance with Elgin loon,BBC presenter and all-round niceguy Gary Robertson. We're really

lucky to have such a great broadcaster fromMoray, who is really in touch with where hegrew up. Nice to see you Gary!

The Bike Revolution has started in Moray! Working with donated bicycles and parts, the team fixes them up or strips them down and then sells them on at affordable prices.

The project aim is to get more people out cycling by providing affordable bikes, maintenance classes and route guides.

Bike Revolution has been launched by Outf!t Moray and works with local businesses and charities. Proud partnerships with Stuart Cycles in Forres, Moray Waste Busters and Varis Training have helped the project swing into action.

Activities in the local area also include Bike Doctor sessions, where trained bike technicians safety check people’s bikes and attend local events around Moray.

The project has been funded by Moray LEADER, Cycling Scotland, Outf!t Moray and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

Donations of bikes, no matter their condition, are more than welcome. Give the team a call to arrange a time for drop offs.

Sales take place monthly at the HQ in Lossiemouth, with all bikes for sale pictured on the project’s Facebook page.

Money generated from the project goes toward providing vulnerable and disadvan-taged young people with training and development opportunities to boost confidence, life skills and employability.

Next bike sale: 1st Sept 9.30-12.30

Chef’sConfidential

Kris McKie, The Royal Hotel, Elgin

Cinnamon Toasted Brioche,Local Berries & Ice Cream

Serves 4

100g each Strawberries, Raspberries & Blackberries

4 Slices Brioche Bread

1tsp Ground Cinnamon

4 tbsp Caster Sugar mixed together with cinnamon

Stock Syrup – For The Fruits

250g Caster Sugar

275ml Water

1 Vanilla Pod, split

1. Make stock syrup by bringing all ingredients to the

boil and simmering for 7 minutes. Cool to room

temperature.

2. Hull the strawberries and cut in half, cut blackberries

sideways and leave the raspberries whole.

3. Fold fruit gently into stock syrup and chill for at least

2 hrs.

4. When ready to serve, dust both sides of the brioche

with cinnamon sugar and grill on both sides until

golden.

5. Place each slice of toast on serving plates and

spoon over marinated fruits.

6. Serve with ice cream.

Chef’s Note: We like to sprinkle some finely sliced mint

and some black pepper over the fruit toasts, bringing

a note of freshness and spice to the sweet local fruits.

Enjoy!

Elgin BID is delighted to be hosting the 3rd Music Mania Event at Elgin Plainstones and around the City centre area, offering a fun filled day of music and entertainment for all the family. We are also proud that the event will support MFR Cash for Kids and hope to have a live MFR outside broadcast happening on the day (TBC).

Celebrating local talent we are delighted to have secured some fantastic bands including Be Like Pablo, Fortunate Sun, Max MacPherson Trio, Fat King George and Blair MacLeod.

Elgin BID Manager Jacqui Taylor said “This is set to be a really exciting day for all the family. We have some fantastic acts ready to entertain visitors to the town centre and the surrounding area.”

For a full list of the acts visit our web site www.elginbid.co.uk or follow us on facebook www.facebook.com/elginbid. For our younger visitors we will also have the hugely popular Bubbles the Clown and for the football fanatics we will have Street Football, live in the town centre.

As well as supporting MFR Cash for Kids we are pleased to be supporting Start to Knit, a charity which supports

adults with learning disabilities – who have been knitting the largest scarf that Elgin has ever seen, which will be on display on the day. We are also looking at securing the talents of local artists for the painting of a mural on the day on the frontage of one of the vacant premises in South Street.. ‘don’t miss seeing artists at work.’

As well as the day’s music and entertainment, there is the chance for 3 lucky winners to scoop prizes, which they can spend in one of the city centre retailers, if they successfully complete our musical treasure hunt.

So why not bring the family out for the day and embrace the sights and sound of Elgin. *Band Line Up subject to change.

Dreamingof...

Jersey is the largest and most southerly of the Channel Islands, yet it is only nine miles by five miles. With the best sunshine in the British Isles and direct flights departing Inverness and Aberdeen from June to September, what could be easier?

Jersey has some of the best sandy beaches and bays in Britain. St Clements Bay offers beautiful stretches of fine sandy beaches and runs into Jersey’s capital, St Helier. The beach at St Ouen’s Bay stretches for five miles and is rarely crowded, and during the summer months this beach offers an array of water sports. St. Aubin’s Bay, is a stretch of beach from St Helier to the fishing port of St. Aubin. To its east stands Elizabeth Castle, a great historical site which is accessible either by foot at low tide or by the Castle ferry. The Castle has watched over Jersey’s seaway for over 300 years. One of the more popular beaches boasted by the island is St. Brelade’s Bay situated in a sheltered position on the south west of the island making it much warmer than some of the other bays.

Nestling off the Normandy coast and only a short ferry crossing from Jersey’s St Helier port is Guernsey, the second largest of the Channel Islands. St Peter Port, the island’s capital, is a bustling harbour full of restaurants and boutiques. Guernsey is situated 30 miles from the French Coast, and it benefits from a much milder climate than we do in the UK. It is a rambler’s paradise with an abundance of wild flowers growing in the mild climate, coastal paths, sweeping sandy bays and wide open beaches.

Don’t forget day trips are easily arranged to Jersey’s other neighbouring Islands-Herm, Sark & Alderney!

With both islands easily reached with direct flights from your local airport visitingJersey and Guernsey has never been easier.
