1st July 2020
Dear Year 5!
An enormous, Everest-sized ‘whoop, whoop’ to our active, thoughtful and resilient class. It is an
absolute pleasure to receive you updates and have a sneaky-peak of an insight into the outrageously-
varied range of interests you all have!
Firstly, our perspiration-drenching weekly class ‘activity train’ shows no sign of slowing and halting to
a stop. We’re currently tracking on 960 hours and 10 minutes, which is within touching distance of
Y6’s 1076 hours and 50 minutes. Together, we still account for 70% of the school’s total, so let’s
keep positively and purposefully striding forward for the final two weeks and keep the friendly,
competition pressure on!
Secondly, Mr Spencer has planned a Sports Week between Monday 6th - Friday 10th July for all
classes and children to participate in. Our ‘PE PT-T’ (Physical Education Personal Trainer-Teacher)
letter with all the information, task instructions and forms to record your activity achievements is
included immediately below. All classes will be competing against each other so let’s channel our
inner blistering-Usain Bolt, heptathlon heroics of Katarina Johnson-Thompson, dynamic Dina Asher-
Smith or the wilful-focus of David Weir to enjoy the challenges, try our best and flex our famous Y5
muscles!
Moving away from ‘muscle’ (given the phrase ‘the pen is mightier than the sword’), ‘M’ has been the
magic letter for letters this week - with a big air ‘high five’ to Marina, Max, Mayar and Milan for
writing in. Marina – well done on passing your Grade 3 on the piano, feeding the parrots (hopefully
without any more incidents involving something else beginning with ‘p’ that is also a ‘sp emoji’ ) and
play rehearsals for ‘Into the Woods.’ I think you’ll make an excellent Cinderella stepsister - just don’t
practise on your actual sister in the meantime! I’m super impressed to hear that you have been
learning about coding. Enjoy the Order of the Phoenix and I think your triangle angle question is 42
degrees ;-). Max – your spooky, seaside, short ghost story sent shivers down my spine and would be
amongst equally ghoulish company in the next edition of eerie tales by Kevin Crossley Holland.
Mayar – your Wi&Fi cartoon is incredibly special. You are far too kind and generous – a mention in
your blockbuster movie credits and an invitation to the glamorous red carpet film premier will suffice
! I have no doubt you would be the most sensible, environmentally-conscious do-gooder in the
Hollywood movie mogul industry (and yes, we all need a well-deserved break from time to time).
Milan – anyone who manages to celebrate their birthday four times deserves a medal and guard of
honour! I am still mightily impressed that you managed to wangle and collectively consume four
birthday cakes. I’d personally have to hit the treadmill - like a manic gerbil in an exercise-wheel - for
a week, to offset all that sugary yumminess!
Furthermore, our brilliant Y5 blog just keeps getting better and better with more and more of you all
getting involved. Adelina – I loved your Sponge Bob spot the difference. Roman and Pepe – you’ve
both convinced me to temporary shelve my next-to-read novel plans and plummet head first for
adventure in the form of ‘The Last Wild Series’ and ‘A Boy and Bear in a Boat.’ Roman – I agree that
foxes are rather ‘fantastic’ . Julia – ‘The Chase’ is definitely on with your ‘beastly’ quiz questions
and Marina – your assortment of intricate origami is masterfully ‘animal-tastic’! Sebastian – your
algebraic brain-boggling teaser had me baffled but your chocolate facts or ‘choc-acts’ post gave me
some temporarily light relief before resuming your maths challenge! Milan – you really are becoming
our Y5 Alan Titchmarch (he’s a famous gardener and TV presenter). You should possibly consider
providing a quote to Mrs Vagic for the landscaping and replanting of the school’s green space …
apparently, a trick of the trade is to compile your quote and then add a few zeroes (or place values)
to the bill’s bottom line .
In other news, Sophie has had a week off the baking business. I think this is primarily because her
baking requires the oven to be on a high setting, which makes the kitchen too hot for Bobby
(although I have a sneaking suspicion she thinks I’ve been eating too much bread recently). Bobby is
enjoying the cooler weather this week and is still picking up and claiming anything dropped on the
floor as hers – such as shower scrunchies, the post, shoes and pretty much anything else. Sophie
and I also managed to unknowingly wear identical clothes one evening.
I hope you all have a great week Y5. Keep on smiling Y5 and enjoy the PE challenges!
All my thoughts and best wishes,
Mr Tauchert
SBSP Sports Week 2020
Hello and welcome to our Sports Week for this academic year!
It would have been very upsetting to not celebrate the sporting abilities of our pupils
across the school so we have planned for a week-long event.
From Monday 6th July to Friday 10th July, all pupils will aim to complete 8 activities
and send in the total number of points they have achieved. All scores from the year
group will be added and the winning year group revealed. Therefore, ALL pupils
must try their best and complete the activities to give their year group the greatest
chance of winning!
The event has been planned knowing that households will not have access to lots of
sports equipment or much space. The points system has been calculated to fit the
expectations of each year group – the same 8 activities will be done by each pupil but
the amount of points that are won is dependent on the year group the child is in.
You should be able to find instructions for how each activity is to be done as well as
the rules for scoring. You are only allowed 1 ATTEMPT at each. Of course you
can practise an activity, but when you’ve decided to officially start it, then that will
be your final score.
One of our school values is trust and we will be trusting that you complete the
activities fairly and to their best of your ability.
I look forward to receiving the results no later than Sunday 12th July. Please email
only your name, year group and points total to [email protected]
I wish you the best of luck and look forward to announcing the winner on the school
website on Monday 13th July.
Best wishes,
Mr Spencer
PE coordinator

Last week’s answers:
1) Personal pronouns – I, you, he, she, it, we, they, me, him, her, us and them
Possessive pronouns – my, our, your, his, her, its and their
Relative pronouns – who, whom, whose, which and that
2) Non-fiction instruction/explanation text features: Headings, subheadings, bulletpoints,
modal verbs, imperative verbs, time adverbials, diagrams, technical language.
3)
4) The census is a head count of everyone in the country on a given day. A census has been
taken in England and Wales, and separately for Scotland, every ten years since 1801, with
the exception of 1941.
The object of the census was not to obtain detailed information about individuals, but to
provide information about the population as a whole; listing everyone by name, wherever
they happened to be on a single night, was the most efficient way to count everybody once,
and nobody twice.
5) Big Hero 6
Year 5’s ‘Famous Five’ Quiz Questions
1) How many phonemes (sounds) can you recall (and list)? How can they be grouped or
categorised?
2) What is the difference between direct speech and indirect speech? Explain and write an
example of each.
3)
4) What is the difference between a refugee and an asylum seeker?
5) Movie Title phrased badly: Auburn highland tomboy attempts to reverse mystical
shapeshifting curse on family member.
