Why Sports Committee? I have always believed in the saying - ”Education builds character but sports reveals it”. What better place to play sports than where one gets educated! I have always believed that playing a “game” is the basest of all human attributes. I like playing all sports, am not good at all necessarily but it is fun. Sports is essential to my being. I have not only enjoyed but also learnt about people when playing. Sports is the only discipline that makes people think about strategies while also having fun. Till the time our college does not stop us, to say it does not encourage us, is not relevant. Sports is an individual choice and we should be strong enough to exercise that choice. Holding huge tournaments is not what sports is about but to practice and improve our own skill. So even if the college does not fund us, playing the games we like should not be a problem. Also, if possible, convince the relevant authorities about the importance of sports and its applications in management. I helped in organizing the intra-college cricket tournament for my engineering college. Being in Mumbai, our college did not have a big campus, so we had to book maidans, for the tournament. From booking the maidans to creating 4 groups of 3 teams each to getting equipment and scheduling the tournament and making rules so that 2 matches can be played in a day on one ground, we had to prepare all this nearly 2 months before the tournament. And all the while being transparent, so that no team accuses you of giving them a tough group or scheduling matches inappropriately! Whatever problems that may have arised, the satisfaction of holding the tournament free of controversies is unparalleled. People tend to remember things that makes them happy or when they are enjoying themselves. What better way to promote your company than in such an atmosphere? It is no wonder that all big sponsorships are given to athletes and sportspeople. Most companies in India are passionate about some game or the other. We just need to appeal to their passion. I don’t think I can sell sports to sponsors, if they are passionate about it, we will get them otherwise we won’t. Being a sports sponsor is all about your commitment to living, improving, surviving, dedication, passion and fun! If you are looking for these qualities, be on the “ground”. Organizing an intra-college cricket tournament in hostel should be easy. There are around 170 boys in the hostel, assuming only half play well or are interested, we can have 6 teams with 15 members each. These teams can either be selected via auction or groups can give their own teams. Auction seems to be a better option. These teams will then be divided in two groups and the top two teams can then qualify for the semifinals and so on. During the group stages, each team plays two matches. Let us say A, B and C are in group 1 and D, E and F in group 2. We can play 2 matches a day in a ground, assuming 20 overs a side matches. So, it will take 3 days to finish the group stages and 2 more for the semis and the finals. So we can play the tournament over a 3 week period with matches only on weekends or over a 6 week period with matches only on Sundays. This can be tweaked based on the schedule of the participating teams. Also, we can have 2 female players in the playing eleven as an additional constraint, making the tournament inclusive. After-all helping people enjoy and have fun is what SportsComm is all about!
