Dr. Jarvis comes to us from Wausau, Wisconsin where he has worked at the Bone and Joint Musculoskeletal and Surgery Center for the past 15 years. He will begin his practice in Powell in late September. · Dr. Jarvis completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. · He also completed a fellowship at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Center in Cincinnati, Ohio.· He completed medical school at Rush Medical College in Chicago, Illinois.· Board Certi� ed in Orthopedic Surgery· Board Certi� ed in Sports Medicine Athletics and sports are Dr. Jarvis’s passion and he has a great deal of experience working with sports teams and events. He even had the privilege of serving as the team physician for the Detroit Tigers for a day. In addition to alpine skiing, Dr. Jarvis enjoys golf, camping, hunting, � shing and water skiing.


ABSAROKEE HUSKIES football

A new year, a new season and an opportunity for the Absarokee Husky gridiron team to improve on last year’s results. Specifically, more in the win column. The 2012 season ended with a regular season record of 5-4.

Returning to the Husky squad is senior Braden Collins, who was a 2012 Southern C 8-man all-conference selection in the positions of wide receiver, punter, defensive end and kicker.

Another returning player and all-conference pick is senior Tyler South in the guard position. The Huskies take on White Sulpher Springs Sept. 20 for Homecoming.

Absarokee Husky squad looking to improve

BRIDGER SCOUTS football

Coached by Mike Mathis (7th year, 33-22) the Scouts last year finished with a 6-3 record and were Southern Division Champions advancing to the quarterfinals in the playoffs. .

The team lost a number of seniors last year and the team is smaller but has ‘more speed” said Mathis. Returning seniors are Wyatt Schroeder, Tryston Matt and Tyler Dravetshy. Other important players to the team, Jimmy Kelsey, Eric Brandt and Kyle Brandt.

ColUMbUS CoUGaRS football

Much has changed for the Columbus Cougar football team since last year. And its not just the usual graduation losses. The big news is the shake-up in District 4B where long-time Cougar rivals Huntley Project and Shepherd have departed to join District 3B - a result of Broadus moving down to Class C. What’s left of 4B is Columbus, Red Lodge, Joliet, Roundup, and Big Timber, which has moved from 5B.

Facing that new district landscape will be a young Cougar team that lost 11 seniors to graduation including stalwarts Tyler Ostrum, Brady Wiggs, Daniel Wiggs, Dusty Sobrero, Chase Kent, Colter Gibson, Braydon Beer, Lukas Washington and Quinton Edeler.

But the cupboard is not bare. Junior quarterback Kade Osborne is back after throwing for over 1,700 yards and 16 TD’s a year ago. Senior Brandon Clouse caught 18 passes a year ago and will likely be Osborne’s primary receiver. Junior Brady Exner ran for over 200 yards in spot backfield duty last year and will likely get the majority of carries as the Cougars switch to a single back spread offense. Senior Justin Meier also saw duty in a variety of spots.

Despite the inexperience - the Cougars return no starters to the offensive line - there is optimism that the Cougars will reach the playoffs for the fifth straight year behind veteran Coach John Smith, who returns for his 24th season. To do so, the Cougars will have to get by Red Lodge, who ran the table in 4B a year ago and are among the 4B favorites.

The Cougars’ next game is an away contest against Townsend on Sept. 20.

Coached by Mike Storer and Clark Begger, both in their first years. Falcons record last year was 4-4. Both coaches said that they have a young team but the leader-ship from the seniors has been setting a good example for the coming season.

Returning seniors are Rye Kern, Miles Guenther and Juniors Stephen Shouse and Duncan DeVries.

Other keynote players Gene Barker, Travis Sneesley, Carter Moore, Triston Barker, Caleb Rioux, Jonathan Damjanovich, Levi Wilm, Kaleb Berkmoes, Cody Greg-ory, Joe Thomas and Bert Kessler.

JOLIET J-HAWKS football

Coached by George Warburton (6th year, 27-24), Joliet are looking forward to this season gaining some young players and some seasoned talent.

Out of the 128 students enrolled at the high school, 25 signed up for football. Warburton expects to see sophomores and freshmen in the side.

Joliet finished last season with a 2-6 record. Returning seniors are Brock Beede, Josh Luoma, and juniors are Terryn Bermes and Levi Mydland.Other players include Chris Lamb, Colter Peterson, JordaPolesky, Jared Schwend, Wyatt Kramer and Mathew Niles.

PARK CITY PANTHERS football


First-year coach Jason Ness will lead the Park City Pan-ther football team this season as it seeks to improve on last year’s 5-3 record.At the close of the regular season last year, the Panthers were tied for second in the Southern East conference.Returning to the field for the Panthers will be Southern C 8-man All-Conference selections senior safety Bryson England. Also back will be seniors Michael Marchand, Seth Kober, Cody Hammel, Riley Madsen, Keaton Bender-Mitchell and juniors Ty Robbie and Mason Moe.The Panthers are in action Sept. 21 in a road game against Gardiner.

Renegade football gave fans some thrilling moments last season.The 5-3 squad won its final conference game to advance to the play-offs. In that play-off game against the Hysham Pirates in Hysham, the Renegades held a 1-point lead in the final minutes when the Pirates took possession and scored with two seconds remaining on the clock, giving them the win 27-22.It’s a loss the RPR squad is looking to avenge. And with five return-ing starters, optimism is high.

Senior Richard Hahn Jr., an all-conference pick last season, is back along with Andrew Boatman, Austin Purdum, Justice Culbertson and Nolan White.The next game is Saturday, Sept. 21 at Northern Cheyenne at 1 p.m.

Coach’s Outlook: “We have a strong returning group of upper classmen that are working very hard and (we) should be a very competitive team.”

Red Lodge Rams FootballCoach John Fitzgerald is now in his 10th year and holds a record of 32-43. Last year the rams finished 9-1, one of their best performances, reaching the State B Playoffs. He said, “We have a good number of kids returning this year, but we have to replace some excel-lent football players from last season. The team have been putting in a good effort preseason.” The Rams lost 13 seniors from last year but have 6 returning seniors this year, Levi Lynde, Andy Nordstrom, Tom Bolkcom, Renny Schultze, Aaron Loewen and Yasha Ackerman. Assistant coaches are Kevin Conners, John Perrigo and Ron King.

Red Lodge Rams Cross Country coach Matt Schrowe feels the “team returned a lot of very good runners this year.”“For the boys, seven of the nine varsity runners are returning and for the girls, six of the nine var-sity runners are returning from last years State team,” he said. “Each of the teams, boys and girls, worked hard through the summer months. In fact, twelve runners spent four days at the Whitefish Running Camp in Big Fork, in June. With this type of off season dedication and a lot of returning runners, the Red Lodge Running Rams look for-ward to another great season.”

They have five returning seniors this year, all on the boys side: Cesar Beiber, Isaac LaRowe, Will Haman, Eric Dye and Mi-cah Ballard.

“All are on track to have a great season and are really good role models for the under-classmen,” said Schrowe.

In addition, they have a new assistant coach, Dylan Zizter.

“Zizter ran cross country for Concordia College in Portland, Ore., and is really excited about bringing his running experi-ence to the kids,” said Schrowe.

Promissing newcomer she said are Melissa Daly, Trevor Deal, Marc Grewell, Wyatt Luloff, Nick May, Shane Milton, Tanner White.

To say the Absarokee High School volleyball squad was young last year would be an understatement.Comprised of two juniors, a smattering of sophomores and several freshman, the squad gelled rela-tively quickly and posted a 6-6 regular season record, finished fourth at the district tournament and earned itself a trip to divisionals.Named to last year’s 4C all-conference teams were senior outside hitter Haley Fallang and sophomore setter Emma Chandler, both of whom are returning this year.Also back are Maisey Sheppard, Kylee Gullings and Makayla Peterson.Coach Kathryn Fjare said the squad has strong leadership from its two seniors and is looking forward to hitting the court.The team’s next match is Sept. 19 at home against in-county rival Reed Point-Rapelje.

The Columbus Cougar volleyball squad 2012 season was a lesson in endurance.

The young squad struggled through an arduous year that ended with one win and two losses at the District 4B tourna-ment. The upside is that a number of players return to the court with experience. Specifically, Courtney Martinez, Ra-chel Ault, Kyla Rouane and Shayne Howell.

The next match is Saturday, Oct. 5, against Shepherd at home.

Fromberg Falcons head coach Krystal Van Dyke is optimistic for the new season.“Once again, we are a very young team. The difference between this year and last year is that now, we have experience playing together as a team; we all know each other extremely well and function as a whole instead of 6 individuals on the court. We are all aware of what we are capable of and have very high expectations of this year.”The Falcons had a 1-14 record last year.

Colette Webber, head coach of the Joliet J-Hawks volley-ball team is now in her 6th years and finished last season with a 9-7 record.

“We had 6 Seniors last season, so it’s going to be a very different team with 4 sophomores and 9 incoming fresh-man. This group of girls are very selfless and have an incredible work ethic. We might be the underdog, but I

believe we will surprise a lot of people. Breanna Kramer, Drue Kissler, and Nicole Luloff are my returning seniors and they are very special young ladies with great leader-ship qualities and athletic abilities. I am excited for the ju-niors who will be stepping up to playing the varsity level.

They have so much drive and a love for the game. It will be fun watching everyone grow,” said Webber.

The teams has 21 girls out for volleyball, with 3 return-ing Seniors: Breanna Kramer-outside hitter, Drue Kissler-defensive specialist, and Nicole Luloff-right-side hitter, middle.

There are 4 juniors: McKinna Olson-setter, Madison Ung-er-middle hitter, Kaylee Rowlison-defensive specialist, and Sheridan Ruggles-defensive specialist.

The 2012 Reed Point-Rapelje volleyball squad was the pic-ture of perfection for nearly the entire regular and post-con-ference season, posted a perfect regular season record and claiming both the District 4C championship and the South C Divisional championship.The squad made history with its first trip ever to the state tournament in Bozeman, where the Renegades ultimately placed third.Five players were selected for the 4C all-conference team, four of whom the team lost to graduation. However, all-team pick and returning Whitney Bare will be back.Also back will be Jessica Ullery, Sydney Kern, Brianna Krieger and Brooke Krieger.The squad’s next match is Thursday, Sept. 19, against Absa-rokee at Absarokee at 7 p.m.

The roof of the Meadowlark Assisted living center is set to receive a new roof due to an approved proposal signed during the regularly scheduled commissioners meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 10.Commissioners received two proposals, one for over $25,000 and a second from Curt Rob-bins Reliable Construction (of Columbus) for $20,322.49. Robbins proposal was unanimously approved. Commissioner Jerry Dell said the project has been in the works for a few years, but did not elaborate. When commissioners didn’t further explain the cause for the repair to the roof, Human Resource & Finance Spe-cialist Joe Morse said the project is a result of hai l storm damage from a few years ago. Although unsure of the exact distribution of funds, Morse said the project will be largely covered by an insurance claim.

Disaster and Emergency Services Coordina-tor Carol Arkell presented a proposal from D y n a m i c E n v i r o n m e n t a l A s s o c i a t e s , I n c .

Accord-ing to Mishler ’s letter, the three Park City incumbents (Robert Lowman, James Elmore and Gary Schanck) have opted to continue their positions, without opposition.

Stillwater Billings Clinic celebrates 1-year milestone

The one -year anniversar y of the creat ion of the St i l lwater B i l l ings Cl in ic in Columbus was this past Tuesday, Sept. 10. The event wasn’t

marked by any large signs or spectacles, but CEO Tim Russell was happy to reflect on the progress the Clinic has made and to look to the future.

The new 37,000 square foot, $16 mil l ion cl inic opened it ’s doors in 2012 with a clinic, emergency room, 10 hospital beds and supporting lab facilities. I t has state of the art CT scan machines, digital x-rays and dig-ital mammography equipment, is cer-tified as a trauma receiving facility, and just received approval of a three-year license as a critical access hos-pital. Add to that an “integrated facility” with the Billings Clinic network and electronic medical records, and visi-tors to the clinic should have what Russell called a “seamless delivery of services.”

The facility sports a dedicated heli-pad, which Russel l explained is a huge upgrade for accessibil ity and safety instead of landing in an old

football field they way it used to. And safety is key at the new facility, with clearly marked entrances, and spe -cial accommodations to support the 24-hour emergency room. The partnership with the Bill ings Clinic (which was recently named a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Net-work) enables patients at the Stillwa-ter Billings Clinic to access special-ists and additional resources.

The Clinic is more than just a hos-pital, it is a “cornerstone of communi-ty wellness” said Russell; the staff of doctors enable the clinic to be prima-ry care providers for the communi-ty.

As the year has g o n e by R u s s e l l s a y s t r a f f i c h a s increased drast i -c a l l y , w i t h t h e

c l i n i c s e e i n g bet ween 650 and 700 pat ients a month, and a record 218 patients in the ER in July. The building has room to potential-ly expand services including operat-i n g r o o m s a n d a d d i t i o n a l b e d s , although they are currently just pos-sibilities that Russell is considering. In the meantime, the facility is run-ning smoothly and Russell hopes that local people will continue to grow confident in their local health servic-es. And of course Russell said the new clinic was made (and continues to be) possible thanks to the foundation, members of the capital campaign and all those who will help in the future. The facility is located just behind the Town Pump at 710 N. 11th St., Columbus.

A Bozeman man is behind bars on charges he alleged-ly bilked 10 Columbus businesses out of $2,350 in an advertising scam.Joseph Smith, 45, is being held at the Yellowstone County Detention Facility on $25,000 bond. Last Thurs-day he appeared in district court and pleaded not guilty to one felony count of Theft. His defense attorney had asked for a $5,000 bond, arguing the total alleged loss in the case amounted to around $2,300 and that Smith had a family and job in Bozeman.

According to court documents, a Columbus business contacted the Stillwater County Chamber of Commerce in October 2012 regarding a man named J. Smith was selling advertising claiming to be affiliated with the chamber. The chamber made contact with Smith, who said a few months prior, someone at the chamber had

granted him permission to do so, according to court documents.The chamber called the business back and told them to stop payment on the check.Smith was selling “business card advertising” to bor-der a map brochure of the Columbus area and was told by the chamber to stop telling business owners he was affiliated with them. The Columbus Police Department was contacted and through an investigation, found nine additional businesses that had also been allegedly scammed out of money by Smith, who used three dif-fered types of business logos and invoices during the transactions, according to court documents. When contacted by police, Smith said he was a legiti-mate businessman who worked with a partner. A busi-ness owner later identified Smith as the man who had introduced himself to her under the name of that alleged business partner, according to court documents.Columbus police also learned during the investigation that a similar scam had been pulled in Sweet Grass County. At last Thursday’s hearing, Chief Deputy Still-water County Attorney Nancy Rohde said Gallatin County businesses were involved as well.

9. While visiting Red Lodge in

August 2011, Terence Scott, a

9/11 volunteer recovery worker

from Staten Island, gave Red

Lodge Fire Rescue these arti-

facts from the Sept. 11, 2001 ter-

rorist attack on the World Trade

Center. Scott recovered a large piece

of metal from a fire engine

beneath the rubble. He cut

many small pieces of the metal

to give to New York area police

and firefighters, survivors, and

families of victims of the tragic

event. In 2011, he and his wife

took a cross county trip, taking

along a few metal fragments

and several photographs that

Scott had taken as he walked

back to the ferry after working

all day at Ground Zero. People

often refer to the bubbles in his

photograph as “spirits rising

from the ashes.” For the first

time in ten years, he decided to

give some of the metal frag-

ments to those with no direct

relation to the event. If he felt a

special connection with a person

he met on the trip, he gave a

photograph; if he felt a special

connection to a town, he gave a

photograph and a metal frag-

ment to the local firehouse.

where he won a first place tro-

phy for his motorcycle during

the Antique Car and Motorcycle

Show. He also recalled having a

fabulous dinner at the Elks. In

addition to the photograph and

metal fragment given to Red

Lodge Fire Rescue, he gave pho-

tographs to two local residents;

Pamela Todd, and Tim Buck-

stead, owner of Bone Daddy’s.

Firefighter goes beyond call of duty

In the aftermath of the Rock

Creek Fire, one firefighter talked

about his mission to help his commu-

nity beyond fighting fires.

“I work for the Jefferson County

Sheriff ’s Office in Conifer, Colorado,”

explained Scott Halladay recently on

a break from 12 hours of fire fighting

up at the Carbon County Fairgrounds

Incident Command Post. When called

to the Rock Creek Fire he said he was

just pulling a hose off of a Jefferson

County fire. His number one concern

is fighting fires. Halladay has major responsibility

in a fire for communications. He sets

“repeaters”(transmitter relays).

Working with fire behavior analysts

he sees where a fire’s heading and

jumps ahead to prevent communica-

tion “dead spots.” With a fire in the

rugged Beartooths, he cannot simply

drive there. Instead, a helicopter flies

him up to mountaintops where he sets

up the equipment and is picked up.

Steep canyons and drainages are big

challenges for safety. “If you can’t

have adequate communication, it can

shut down an operation. Communica-

tions wants everyone on the same fre-

The Beartooth Elks Lodge #534 honored the Late Bill

Alberta Sept. 8 with the Grand Opening of the Bill

Alberta Veterans Center situated in the basement of

the Lodge building. Alberta’s widow Norma received a

plaque from Glory Mahan, Leading Knight, which will

hang permanently in the center. The inscription reads ‘Bill

Alberta Memorial Veterans Center Dedicated Sept. 8, 2013,

in memory of William M. Alberta US army 1947-1951.’

Warene Wall, the Chair for the National Government

Commission for the Lodge, opened proceedings by welcom-

ing all, before Exalted Ruler Joel Todd, spoke of his

“respect” and “appreciation” for Alberta, and his “enjoy-

ment” of being called “kid” by him because Todd owns a

Medicare card. Todd thanked the VFW, American Legion, and the VFW

Auxiliary along with a host of others who donated items

and volunteered to help create the center.

“I thank everybody. The financial resources of this

lodge and the contributions from the public made it possi-

ble to thank our veterans.” Norma also received a print of her 60th wedding anni-

Gary Race, Chair of the Lodge’s Veterans Committee,

said, “On behalf of the Elks Veterans Committees and the

other four veteran organizations in the area who contribut-

ed; the VFW, the American Legion, Operation Second and

Carbon Stillwater Yellow Ribbon Community…Veterans

this is your room, created for you to use.”

As to the honor, Norma said, “I feel fine, I’m really sur-

prised and honored for him, he was always for the veterans

and being an Elk, and spent a lot of time here. This place

looks so much different.”

County Sheriff's Department descended on a resi-

dential home at Mountain Springs Villa on Satur-

day after dispatch had received a call from a con-

cerned person who had talked with the resident at

the house in question. The incident ended peaceful-

ly with the resident “cooperating completely” with

authorities said Police Chief Richard Pringle.

Pringle commented that the incident was a mis-

understanding with a third party whom the resident

was talking to on the phone. The third party then

called Red Lodge dispatch concerned about the hom-

eowner’s welfare. “He had taken some meds,” Pringle said.

The resident was allowed back into h i s home a f t e r b e i n g checked by med-ics.

H e w a s n o threat to the offi-cers conf irmed Pringle.

“It was a non event,” he said.

Attending the scene were the Red Lodge Police Department, the Carbon County Sheriff ’s Office and Red Lodge Fire and Ambu-lance.
