On Tuesday, Mar. 13, boys’ volleyball defeated Culver in three sets at home. The first set went into overtime, but Beverly prevailed 27-25. In the second game, Beverly picked up its intensity and won the set in a score of 25-21. In the third and final set, Beverly won in a final score of 25-19. According to junior Eli Lloyd, the leadership of captain Danny Tabariai was a large contributing factor to Beverly’s win. “Danny Tabariai set very well for us and exhibited incredible leadership that led us to victory,” Lloyd said. Tabariai described the win as a team effort, but was also weary of the fact that there is still room for improvement for the squad. “We had great passing from Will Park and great hits from Lucas Wohl and Ronan Massana,” Tabariai said. “However, we made a lot of mental errors so the games were closer than they should have been.” Lloyd led the squad in spikes, and Massana, a sophomore, clinched the third set for Beverly with a streak of four spikes, something Lloyd attributes to the team’s support of Massana. “The whole team just wants him to succeed,” Lloyd said. “He works hard in practice and it shows in our games.” The win was particularly special for Beverly because Culver has taken Beverly’s playoff spot the past two years. The win has provided Beverly with a substantial boost of team morale for the remainder of the season. “The win has given us the confidence it will take to beat Samo, the team that won CIF last year,” Lloyd said. Beverly is now 2-0 on the season, and 1-0 in league. The team’s next game is at San Gabriel on March 17. Junior Drew Freeman had a particularly outstanding performance, winning all three matches, one against Mira Costa’s top player. Freeman’s matches had scores of 7-5, 6-3 and 6-1. According to Freeman, Wednesday’s success is far from luck. “We worked as a unit today and all realized that we have the potential to actually do very well this year,” Freeman said. Junior Eric Busiashvili also had a strong performance, winning two out of three of Wednesday’s matches with winning scores of 7-6 and 6-0. Anticipating future success, Busiashvili believes that experience will be the key to the team’s victories. “We need to improve on closing out matches,” Busiashvili said. “With more experience we can solve that issue.” Busiashvili’s theory on Wednesday’s success complements that of Freeman, explaining that it was a “team win” in the sense that each member of the team contributed. Following Heller was attack man Morgan Henderson with four goals and an assist. Goalie Michael Suh aided the Normans with ten crucial saves throughout the game. Goalie Grayson Kim also assisted the team with a total of nine saves. Sadka was excited about the win even though he knew from the start that the Normans were the better team. After leading 13-0 at halftime the Normans knew the Spartans did not stand a chance. “We came out stronger and more confident than in some of our previous games and it definitely showed on the field. We were all around just more prepared for this matchup,” Sadka said. Head Coach Steve Taylor was pleased with the win, as he believed the victory finally gave the team a well-deserved sense of accomplishment. Taylor also thought that the team’s execution on key offensive plays kept the Normans ahead of the Spartans and set this game apart from the others. Taylor credited teamwork for the Normans blowout. “We came together as a team; this was a team win,” Taylor said. Taylor believes that with this kind of team play, the Normans can manage to make it to the CIF playoffs and eventually to finals for the first time since 2005. Although the Normans have just come of a huge win, Taylor still expects the team to improve their game play. “We’re going to keep getting better as a team and work together as a team and look for everyone to participate in our future games,” Taylor said. The Normans next face off is against Palos Verdes next Wednesday, March 21. In their previous matchup this season with Palos Verdes, the team was defeated 12- 10. Sadka hopes that the teams’ recent improvements in teamwork and offensive execution on the field will hopefully bring them a different outcome than last time. “We know it’s going to be a challenge, but I think we can stand a chance if we stick together as a team,” Sadka said.
