DIVINGDEEPERThoughts from the AANR Executive Director– Dan Whicker

n February 14, many people will celebrate Valentine’s Day in one way or another. Historically, it has been set aside as a day to

recognize and celebrate love and lovers. Don’t you wish that could be done more often? In a time when we seem to be experiencing so much disunity, mistrust, anger, and hatred, the most obvious thing that is missing is love.

My baby boomer readers will remember the turbulent 1960s when young people were trying to influence society to come together in love and peace. Oftentimes, they were dismissed as unrealistic kooks or crazy hippies. Still, the message of combatting hatred with love was one that resonated with people, drawing attention away from differences onto something that everyone wants and needs — love.

Maybe this Valentine’s Day can act as a reminder to all of us that “love conquers all.” Saint Valentine, whom the holiday is named after, certainly knew this. Valentine was a Roman Christian priest who defied his emperor’s command to refrain from marrying young people. The idea was that unmarried youth made better soldiers, but Valentine recognized the specialness and sacredness of marriage and refused to stop marrying couples. For this, he was executed in 269 A.D. by beating, stoning, and finally decapitation. Sounds a bit harsh for someone who just wanted to celebrate and promote love, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, hate is a strong enemy, but in the end, Valentine clung to his faith and still found that “love conquers all.”

Overtime, different symbols were used in celebration of this holiday: including the color red, which symbolizes strong emotion, the heart, which symbolizes the seat of love and emotions in the human being, and Cupid, the ancient Roman god of love. It is interesting to note that most visual representations of Cupid portray him as a young, nude youth. In Classical Greek art, he is thin, winged, and mischievous. In Hellenistic period art, he plumped up and was given the famous bow and arrow that he shoots into people to fill them with love

and desire. Today, instead of being a teenager or young adult, he is

portrayed as a toddler.

No matter what Cupid’s age, I appreciate the fact that he is a nudist at heart (at least from the point of view of artists). The innocence and feistiness of his youth and his love of life fit the nudist

philosophy perfectly. In fact, the purity of love

and wholesome nudity that he represents go hand-

in-hand. Nudists have known this for a very long time. Our nudity

is an expression of love — for ourselves, for others, for our spouses, for our families, for nature and Creation, for art and beauty, for healthiness and goodness, and for much more.

Really think about love as you consider Valentine’s Day this month. It’s not something that comes to you in the form of a mythical arrow through the heart. It is a choice that you make to reach out and take hold of the love that is all around you, and to pass it along to others after you have filled yourself with its life-affirming essence. Happy Valentine’s Day, friends! l

Ernie Hughes Enters Retirement

sk Ernie Hughes what he wants in his retirement as host of the Mountaindale Sun Resort in North Plains, Oregon, and he’ll say, “Watch TV, drink beer, and get fat.” If you’ve met Ernie, you know that’s one

achievement he’ll never reach, for this octogenarian retiree is an energy dynamo who just keeps going and going.

Ernie and his beautiful wife, Kathleen, have been members of Moutaindale Sun Resort (MSR) since 1990 when the club was known as Restful Haven. In 1991, he was offered the position of club host, assuming responsibility for keeping MSR functioning — maintaining the grounds, keeping the swimming pool and spa sparkling, and ensuring the safety and security of the resort’s many visitors and leaseholders. His most important job was being the face of Mountaindale, greeting newcomers and showing them the many club amenities. Anytime of the day, when he wasn’t inspecting the pool or tending to the grounds, Ernie could be seen answering questions, shaking a hand, or chatting with guests to make them feel comfortable.

Ernie built a service bar in the clubhouse which he operated for 10 years, while Kathleen ran the club snack bar for 20 years. During this time, he also served on the MSR Board and he and Kathleen raised their two young grandchildren who came to live with them after a family tragedy.

When asked about the changes he has seen in the nudist community, Ernie says, “There were more kids then, almost as many kids as adults — more family-oriented.”

“I really enjoyed the people and my job as club host. I think that’s what keeps me alive,” Ernie said. It may also be said that Ernie and Kathleen could well be credited with keeping Mountaindale Sun Resort “alive.” They will continue to live at MSR in their well-earned retirement. l

Last January I married my best friend. Jim Willard and I met nearly 20 years ago at Avalon Resort in West Virginia. We both were involved with other people when we met, but we shared the incredible fun, joy, and friendship of a very special group of people at Avalon. We picked up trash on

the road, volunteered for projects to help the resort, danced with everybody at the dances, and enjoyed the Nudsino (I always lost money, while Jim always won). The companionship, familial support, and caring people that is part of every nudist club was the nurturing environment in which our friendship grew.

There came a time when we were free to see each other as more than friends, and spent more time together. His children, my work, my AANR involvement, and his business were things that could have potentially taken a superior place in our lives or interfered with our friendship. Millions of couples confront the same or equally important challenges in relationships.

But we had to deal with a couple of important questions. I was 50-years-old and had never been married. I had been engaged a couple of times, but I came up against one major question. For some people it is politics. For some it is religion. For me it was nudism.

I was introduced (with major reluctance) to nudism in my 30s, and found that it gave me the very things I had been seeking all my life. It gave me a community, a family, a cause, and an idea that was worth defending.

One of the fellows I dated came to several nudist parties with me. He came late, joined the hot tub shyly, and grabbed his towel with gratitude. “Just can’t do it,” he said. And I understood. There was another man I really admired, worked with, and shared a strong romantic identification. But his work was stressful, demanding, and when he had free time, he wanted to relax. After some very wonderful and loving months, he said that my passion, commitment, and determination to devote myself to nudist rights was something he could admire, but it simply was not something that he could fit into his own life.

That was okay, too. Both of these men were honest and good people. They understood something I didn’t totally understand myself. They

saw that for me, nude recreation was not simply a hobby.

Being 50-years-old and not finding the person with whom I could whole-heartedly marry, I had not too unhappily accepted that my life would be invested in other things than a personal commitment. I would buy an RV, I would travel to nudist clubs, I would build my cabin at Avalon, and I would invest in the mental, emotional, and financial commitment to AANR.

I still had some really special friends in the non-nudist world, such as my work colleagues, GNO (Girls Night Out) friends, and social/recreational groups. One of my dear friends from GNO suggested that I broaden my network of relationships and maybe find the man with whom I could commit my life. Her own solution was an advertisement in The Washingtonian. The man she met through this mode has been delightful. But when she urged me to follow suit, I voiced the one most important thing to me...I want him to be a nudist.

It brought me face-to-face with the issue of what nude recreation means to me. It is a freedom that I cherish, and am willing to commit everything in my life to fight to support. It is not recreational and it is not a hobby — it is the most intrinsic thing in my life, and the person with

whom I share my life must understand and share that.

They must be willing to give time and commitment that would otherwise go to a partner and family, and totally understand that this time and commitment must be shared with the cause of making nude recreation a socially recognized and legally protected right.

Well, I found that man. A friend, a nudist, a lover, and now (after 14 years of living together while I was AANR President and acting Executive Director twice), we knew that our commitment to each other, but also the importance of AANR and nude recreation, would be a part of our commitment sanctified in our marriage. Be happy with us! And be committed to AANR! l

It is appropriate that Groundhog Day is in February and many state legislatures start filing new bills in February. The same bills get filed yearly, but the problem is

sometimes after years of trying a bad bill could get passed. The Government Affairs Team works for you to make sure we know when a bad bill gets introduced and work to stop it from making it out of the preliminary steps and out for action.

This is also a lot like Groundhog Day. We do the same things over and over again and see very little change. It takes a dedicated group of people to keep up this grueling activity. Member support is all we have to keep up our efforts. Your membership with AANR and your support for our efforts is essential to our success at fighting anti-nudity legislation.

All of the members of the GAT team in each of the regions work to make sure that legislation detrimental to nude activities are not passed locally. We depend on members, as well as team members to let us know when any legislation at any level is proposed that could begin the avalanche of activity that leads to a bill with negative consequences for nude use in your local area.

Check in on the www.aanr.com website, and see what is new. We have GAT updates and a place for you to tell us when you see something that may need our attention. The website is dynamic and new information pops up

doesyourlogoworkwhennaked?ost businesses have logos. Some are simple, while others are detailed and fancy. Some are merely typographic representations of the brand name; others are iconic and stand-alone without words. Some create an instant connection with the consumer; others miss the mark completely. Regardless of the type of logo you have, does

it help someone understand what you do, what you represent, and whom you serve?

It can be a tall order to achieve all those objectives while also keeping things simple. But the naked logo – a logo that evokes positive understanding without any additional context or explanation of your business – is a valuable tool in your marketing toolkit.

Indeed, your logo is the cornerstone of your visual branding. Because most consumers form first (and often, lasting) impressions of your business based on your logo, it can be vital to your success. Done well, a logo evokes the desired feelings and emotions that plant seeds for a positive business relationship. Done poorly, a logo can send the wrong message to the consumer and create confusion, indifference, or even instant rejection of your brand.

10 THE BULLETIN | February 2017

11February 2017 | THE BULLETIN

ICONIC LOGOS

Iconic logos are the most naked of the bunch. Using only a shape, symbol, or simple image, the iconic logo can evoke a clear picture of the brand without text. It is the proverbial picture that paints a thousand words. There is no need for the brand name to be present because the icon says it all. Examples? Apple, of course. Others include Nike, Chevrolet, Shell, Twitter, Batman, and Ghostbusters. Each of these is visually evocative independent of the brand name. Of course, iconic logos usually embody the full brand equity of the company. In other words, everything a consumer knows about the brand from a long history of marketing and media exposure is considered when the iconic logo is encountered. Your cultural knowledge of the company becomes part of the brand experience. And that experience means the iconic logo can stand on its own.

Warning: Smaller and newer companies can’t depend on using only an iconic logo. Their brand is not mature enough nor ingrained enough in the consumer psyche to rely on this visual branding shortcut.

TYPOGRAPHIC LOGOS

Typographic logos consist of letters and numbers only. That’s not to say they are plain or unadorned. In fact, some of the most recognizable and powerful logos of all time are typographic in nature but quite stylish. Think about the Google, FedEx, or the Coca-Cola logo. Each comes vividly to mind, but essentially is merely a designed representation of letters.

COMBINATION LOGOS

Combination logos use an iconic element along with the typographic brand name. Sometimes the iconic element is enough without the text (think McDonalds, Pepsi, or AT&T), but the brand name often accompanies the graphic. Ford and GE use classic combination logos that rely most heavily on typographic elements but have married their icons (Ford’s oval and GE’s circle with flourishes) with the text. Amazon’s logo is an interesting combination logo that primarily consists of the typography but adds a friendly little arrow pointing from A to Z (as in they sell “everything from A to Z”). Even the FedEx logo – technically a purely typographic treatment – embodies a graphic element because the negative space between the “E” and the “x” form an arrow that conveys movement.

The Three Primary Types of Logos:

What About Your Logo?

Other graphical considerations come into play as well. Your brand’s colors create automatic emotional associations. So does your choice of typography, ranging from soft and whimsical to strong and solid. The reliable replication of your logo across all media is important, too. (Will it look as good in print as it does online?) And can it be distilled into a simple iconic element that works at the thumbnail size – or smaller yet, as a browser tab “favicon”?

What should you think about when developing your logo?

Here’s a basic checklist:

• The type of logo

• Your logo colors (be careful because colors evoke feeling and emotions that will represent your brand for better or worse)

• Translatability across media (print and digital rendering)

• Usability as thumbnails and favicons at various screen sizes

• Distinction from the competition (avoid imitating the intellectual property of others; stake your claim on a look that sets you apart and helps you rise above)

• Simplicity (because simpler is almost always more memorable – and therefore, better)

So, does your logo work when naked? Or does it require lots of supporting content and context to explain your business? Crafting a compelling logo that represents your brand and attracts business is not easy, even if the end result looks like it was the only natural choice – for success undressed! l

12 THE BULLETIN | February 2017

13February 2017 | THE BULLETIN

This is the time of year when we all usually recommit to New Year’s resolutions or whatever dietary plan we subscribe to.  The holidays are in the rearview mirror and all the cookies, eggnog, and other treats are firmly around the midsection or wherever they have

landed.  For me, the recommitment ceremony means vowing to love and cherish my vegan diet and to not lust in my heart after brie, stilton, or provolone.  There I’ll say it, good bread and good cheese are my true love.

Last June, I was faced with the prospect of having to go on medication for very high cholesterol. Instead, I took the option of drastically changing my diet which changed many other things in my world.    I firmly believe that my doctor thought I would say “no way” and just take the pill that was offered.  For many reasons, I am against taking medications when there is another choice. My doctor made it very clear that doing nothing was not an option, unless of course I wanted a heart attack or stroke, both of which were very likely per the current scientific data.

Having grown up in a family where gravy was considered a necessity at every meal and frying was how you prepared the Sunday chicken, has made me have a great appreciation for food other than kale and tofu.  I also come from a family where

many suffer from illnesses that are impacted by food choices. I

often said, “If what you are eating is making you sick, just stop.”

If someone had told me when I was 40-years-old that in my 50s I would

become a nudist and go on to be a partner in

running a nudist club I would have laughed – but here I am.    Likewise, prior to

June, the last thing on my mind was giving up meat, eggs, cheese,

and a host of other things that I find

delicious.    I had known

for some time that my weight was creeping up and blood work numbers were elevated.  Funny how you can ignore the facts until one day they give you a reality check with a swift kick.

To make a long story somewhat shorter:  I immediately bought the book recommended by my doctor and made a shopping list that was long on the produce side.  The hardest part was telling family and friends of my decision.    I got every reaction imaginable.   The most important person (my significant other) was very accepting and I did assure him that I would still cook and serve non-vegan dishes to him.  It is harder but not impossible to cook two menus and going out to eat takes some planning, as does attending club potluck meals and traveling.

Just this past week I went for my six month check and on the positive side I’ve lost over 20 pounds, (and still have a bit more to go) numbers have improved, although not enough.  As I told my physician “I didn’t get here  in six months  so reversing it in that time may be too much to expect.” Did I stay strictly to the plan?  Yes, for the first three months, but then the holidays arrived.  To be completely honest I did have a serving of turkey at Thanksgiving, and I am sure the pie had eggs and cream.  There, I’ve made my confession and hope I have absolution for my fall from vegan grace.

You may be asking yourself what the point is here; you can teach an old dog a new trick and you can change your health for the better at any age.  I often hear friends joke about aging by saying, “If I’d known I would live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.”  I also read nudist information that touts nudism as a healthful way of life.  Let’s prove it now.  Let’s all live to a ripe old age in good health.  You don’t have to choose my way, which for some is too drastic but any change for the better is helpful.  More exercise, better choices in food selection, rethink beverages, instead of caffeine, alcoholic, or sugary drinks try pure water and take a close look at thoughts and attitude.  Try meditation, or something as simple as beginning and ending your day with a positive affirmation. A happy person is often a healthy person.    Here’s what I am asking you to do:    Live naturally, improve just one thing in your life each day, and go on to celebrate your 100th birthday!  Wearing what?  Well your birthday suit of course! l

FAMILYENTERTAINMENT

Home Sweet Home

H ome can be an island of personal freedom. Home is a place where you don’t have to let ugliness in. Home is usually a place you can come back to. Let us look at three movies from three countries,

about the meaning of home and hometowns.

For the whole family:What is a nudist family to do when they lose their privacy? Home (2008) takes us inside such a family in Switzerland. With two teenage daughters and a younger son, they live in an isolated house next to a long-unfinished freeway. While they stay clothed most of the time, it is refreshing to see ordinary household nudity at bath time and laundry time. They have a lot of fun splashing water.

This delightful world comes crashing down when the highway suddenly opens. The defiant older daughter continues to sunbathe discretely in the yard. The rest of the family pull together to protect the fragile mother who does not want to leave the place where she has found happiness. They try to wall themselves off from the outside world — to the point that they almost suffocate. They are not even aware that they have also walled out the oldest daughter.

Aside from a brief lapse into frustrated domestic violence and too much smoking, there is nothing in this film that small children could not watch. But the decreasing happiness may not appeal to them. The movie is in French with English subtitles that may go by too fast for slow readers.

Finding a copy can be a bit challenging. Because search engines have trouble isolating a single-word title, you may need to add the name of the lead actress, Isabelle Huppert. But how many other movies are there about nudist families? This one is worth the hunt.

For teens and older:For contrast, let us look at a movie about homeless people. Greenhouse Effect (2005) is not about the environment, but a 13-year-old Russian street boy who sleeps in a warm greenhouse and showers at a car wash. With hard work (and some sneakiness), he has managed rather well. Then he meets an 18-year-old pregnant girl suddenly thrown on the streets. He takes her in and tries to help.

We see each of them showering separately. Mostly, this is a movie about kindly people who help out in small ways.

The movie is in Russian — including the buttons to find the English subtitles (which don’t appear until after the militaristic

previews). Fortunately, my disc came with a sheet of easy English instructions.

Unlike the other two movies, the American Doc Hollywood (1991) has no teenagers in it. Yet the leading characters — all in their 20s — are still grappling with a concern of most young people: whether to shake off the dust of their hometown and venture out into the larger world. In this case, it’s a small, friendly

southern town where everybody knows everybody else’s business. Some of the minor characters are full of delightful idiosyncrasies.

When the heroine steps out of the water after her skinny-dip and finds the young doctor staring at her, she calmly informs him that she doesn’t have anything he hasn’t seen before. (Actually, the cameras stay above the waist.) After she has pulled on some clothes, she tells him he can blink now.

The young doctor believes he has escaped his small-town roots and is headed for a well-paid career as a plastic surgeon in Hollywood.

But when he finally gets there, he sees what the place has done to another man from his same hometown. He needs to rethink. This is a warm movie about the value of caring friends and of love.

Home is where you make it. Home is what you make it. These three movies help us appreciate the many values of home. l

NUDEFITNESS

About the authorPete Williams AANR Staff Writer Longtime AANR writer Pete Williams

is a NASM-certified personal trainer who writes about fitness and simple living at www.ToLiveLean.com.

t’s tough to come up with a more effective, low-impact, calorie-burning exercise than in-line skating.

Not only that, in-line skating or “rollerblading,” as it’s more commonly called (because of the popularity of the Rollerblade brand of skates), is also a lot of fun. Nudist resorts with paved roads provide one of the few opportunities to rollerblade in the nude, at least legally.

In-line skating exploded in popularity in the mid-1990s as in-line skates replaced four-wheel roller skates that were popular in the roller rink heyday of the 1970s and 1980s. Many discovered rollerblading was more like ice skating. Unlike the four-wheel, two-on-a-side roller skates, rollerblade wheels are parallel, forming a blade (like ice skates) though no ice is needed.

Perhaps not surprisingly, roller hockey emerged in the late 1990s, attracting ice hockey players who either had moved to warmer climates or could not find adequate ice time. (In the late 1990s, a neighbor of mine in Northern Virginia launched a professional roller hockey league. I suggested he call it Major League Roller Hockey to sound more official. The league is still going strong.)

Rollerblading builds the muscles of the upper legs, buttocks, hips, and lower back. The balance and control necessary to maintain an upright position builds stability, mobility, and core strength while increasing range of motion.

Rollerblading combines rhythmic concentric and eccentric contractions with long isometric contractions, boosting lower body strength. Using good form with your knees bent works your entire lower body, including calves and shins. The abductor and adductor muscles of your outer and inner thighs provide power and stability to your stride. To work

the muscles in your upper body as well, swing the arms to provide momentum and balance while skating.

Unlike running, which taxes the joints with constant foot-to-ground impact, in-line skating is low-impact while burning at least as many calories. According to the Mayo Clinic, a 160-pound person can burn 913 calories in a single hour of rollerblading. In contrast, that same person will only burn 584 calories jogging at 5 mph or 277 calories walking at 3.5 mph for a similar time period.

Most newcomers to in-line skating find rollerblading easier than ice skating because it’s on a non-slippery surface. You still should wear a helmet, along with elbow, knee, and wrist pads. As for the rollerblades themselves, they should fit snugly and support the ankles. If not, try a smaller size or lace the blades tighter. The first skill to master is balance. If you’ve ever been ice skating, you know balancing on such a thin strip of skate is difficult. To get your bearings, walk with the blades on a patch of grass first. Grass provides enough traction that you won’t begin to roll.

Once you feel balanced, look for a smooth, flat piece of ground where you can practice gliding. When you start skating, your movements should be smooth and long. As you put one foot forward, push it back to glide before placing your other blade on the ground, alternating from foot to foot. Go slowly at first to test your abilities then pick up speed.

If you’ve visited nudist clubs with long stretches of well-maintained asphalt roads like Cypress Cove in Kissimmee, Florida, you’ve no doubt seen skilled rollerbladers zipping along wearing nothing but rollerblades. As nudists, we want to wear as little as possible, but resist the urge to forego safety for freedom.

Once you become experienced, you might forego the elbow or knee pads. I’ve been rollerblading for years but I still wear a helmet and wrist pads, which help break a fall.

Perhaps the best benefit of rollerblading is that it’s a workout that doesn’t feel like a workout; it’s just a lot of fun. I live near a trail and it’s always interesting to compare runners with rollerbladers. The runners seem to be trudging along, pounding the pavement. They all seem to be wearing earbuds, using music to help get through the drudgery.

The rollerbladers, by contrast, seem to be cruising along, having fun, not a care in the world. Perhaps not coincidentally, they wear no ear buds, instead taking in the sounds of nature.

When you’re able to do that in the nude, well, that’s an enjoyable workout that’s tough to beat. l

My wife Crystal Bosbach and I arrived late on the afternoon of the ninth to find most of the folks had already arrived, socializing on the porch nude, or whatever state of dress was comfortable. This was a clothing-optional event, so whatever worked for the temperature and conditions was fine. Food and beer was being unloaded into the coolers and pantry shelves. The lodge had a large kitchen and dining area that formed the center of our meeting and indoor free time. A large Tulikivi wood stove heated the dining room and became our retreat from the cold each morning, as the rest of the common areas of the lodge, except for the kitchen were unheated.

Participants were from most of Europe, Great Britain, U.S., and even Singapore. This meant multiple languages, with German and English being used most to communicate. We had a rudimentary familiarity with German, but at the conversation level we used English. Luckily, most of the Europeans attending, including the organizer, had a command of English, so language was not a barrier.

Our first hike was labeled an easy hike to get us all used to the activity level and altitude. We started off from a local village nearby and proceeded to hike up out of the valley until we

topped out on the ridge above. The general rule was when we were on pavement, we had something

on, off pavement the clothes could come off. Unlike the U.S., in Germany and Austria the

pavement often extends well into the countryside, so gravel roads mean you are well off the beaten path. The totals for the day were seven and a half miles and 4,200 feet of elevation gain. A beautiful hike, but strenuous at times and no walk in the park. Crystal and I had conditioned ourselves by hiking in the Cascade-Siskiyou Wilderness and the steeper trails just outside of Ashland, Oregon. This paid off as we

were both keeping up fine, despite our 68 years.

The next two days were equally taxing, but both had their high points and each trail

presents both challenges and rewards. On the third day we encountered a mountain hut, frequently found along major hiking trails to supply a smorgasbord lunch or just quick refreshments. The hut had no other customers, so the

he nude European walking tour was something we had read about and began to seriously plan to attend. This has been going on every year for the last 12 years in various locations in Europe, but recently in Germany and Austria. This past year the event was scheduled for July 9-16 and we signed up on the NAKTIV website to participate. This was done in November 2015 with a payment of $300 for two people to share the lodge. Flight tickets and RV rental reservation were purchased soon after. When we arrived at the lodge, 50 Euros per person was due for food and drink during the week. These costs

were very reasonable, with Richard Foley, the main organizer, and other volunteers striving to keep the event affordable. This year the location was just outside Dienten am Hochkonig, Austria, just west of Salzburg.

proprietor welcomed us to use the facilities nude. It was great to sit outside at his picnic tables sipping beer or radler (a mix of beer and 7-up), with his three children taking orders and bringing the refreshment. The proprietor spoke very good English and we conversed at length, overlooking a cloud covered valley and only the mountain tops visible in the distance.

When the rain came in earnest on day four we headed for a nearby spa at Bad Hofgastein, a tourist destination for the well-heeled. It reminded me of a mini Vail, Colorado. The spa experience was wonderful, and we were able to utilize the FKK area where almost everywhere is clothing-optional. A simple wrap

of the towel and we were in the café ordering lunch.

We opted to leave on day five. With more rain predicted, we had lots of traveling ahead of us and could use the days more productively doing our genealogical research and cycling the cities along the Rhine and Mosel. We parted company with our new found friends, wishing them all well in their future travels. If you have an interest in touring Germany or Austria anyway, this can be made part of a larger tour without much additional expense.

I currently run a northwest meetup group called

Siskiyou Hiking Bares that does clothing- optional day hikes out of Ashland, Oregon. I’ll be studying the feasibility of creating something similar to

the NEWT, a 4-5 day

hiking experience in the Oregon high country, utilizing a cabin for shared housing during the event. Find us at www.meetup.com/siskiyou-hiking-bares. l

lothes make the man; a woman is

defined by her fashion. Sigh. Such

tired truisms. Even more unfortunate

is the metonymy of referring to

someone as a “suit” or a “stuffed shirt.” We

know that to some extent, as social creatures,

we are judged by our appearance, and clothes

make up a large part of that appearance, but

we can begin to overcome that. To become

no more than our appearance, however, is a

very frightening prospect.

One of the themes displayed

in The Wizard of Oz is the

revelation of how false

can be presumptions

about appearances. The

Scarecrow claims he has

no brain, but found, through

love, that he always had a

good one. Likewise, the Tin

Man has his heart and the Cowardly

Lion has c-c-courage. Everyone’s presumed

weakness turns out to be their strength — true

even for the Wizard himself hiding behind his

curtain.

What strikes me as unfortunate about the

Scarecrow, however, is not his presumed

lack of a brain. Rather, I am thinking of the

scene where the Wicked Witch of the West

knocks the stuffing out of the Scarecrow, so

to speak. All he has to give him recognizable

shape are his clothes. Without clothes, he’s a

formless clump of straw. He is not a “stuffed

shirt” who has reduced himself to no more

than his clothes; he is not proud or vain.

Rather, the Scarecrow struggles to realize an

identity, a sense of purpose, after rejecting

the one assigned to him. His struggle begins

when he is helped down off his pole in the

cornfield and goes off on a great adventure

with Dorothy.

The Scarecrow, therefore, should be the

worst candidate to become a nudist. Undress

him and he falls apart — quite literally. I

wonder how many of us had to come to a

mature sense of who we intrinsically are, what

our purpose is, before we could become

comfortable as nudists. I also wonder how

many who grew up as nudists were helped by

this way of life to form a solid sense of identity

and purpose.

Identity goes beyond clothes,

too. Strip ourselves of all our

trappings and what are any

of us? The thought of being

reduced to zero is far more

humbling than being naked

in public could ever be.

Our power is in our ability to

work with what we have. The

Scarecrow had to work past an

identity that did not fit him. At heart

he is a thinker and a problem solver, not a

passive discouragement to those around

him. He came a long way, metaphorically

speaking.

In the end of the film, of course, Dorothy

dreamed of the farmhand Hunk as the

Scarecrow. When we first meet Hunk at the

beginning of the film, he has something of

a reputation of a stumblebum at work, and

Dorothy ignores his practical advice. It’s not

as bad as having a pole up your back, as

the Scarecrow did, but Hunk is more than

a farmhand. Unlike the Scarecrow, he has

a body that can hold its form even without

wearing farmhand clothes. Hunk would be a

good candidate for nudism. l

ORSAsettohelpmeasurerecreation onland

ANRs long involvement with the American Recreation Coalition (ARC) is one of those memberships where your

Government Affairs Team members put in long hours and attend alot of meetings. We do this in order to get a feel for how the recreation community achieves its goals in Washington, and to ensure that the recreation community at large is aware of AANR and what it is and what it does. Federal team leader John Hunter has been our eyes and ears in the District of Columbia and steers our activities in Washington. He recently shared with us the news that a bill championed by ARC and by many other outdoor recreation organizations was signed by the President.

A press release from ARC noted that The Outdoor REC Act instructs the Department of Commerce, with the help of the Department of the Interior, to formally assess and analyze the outdoor recreation economy in the United States. “The purpose of this act is to make sure the outdoor recreation economy receives official government recognition to help federal agencies make good choices in allocating funds through the budget process and invest private funds to enhance recreation on public lands and waters.” The assessment and analysis will be done on a trial basis by Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) which will set up a temporary Outdoor Recreation Satellite Account (ORSA). BEA is best known for producing the figures used in calculating the U.S. Gross Domestic Product. If the ORSA program is successful, BEA will make collection and analysis of data about outdoor recreation permanent. BEA already has permanent accounts set up for the arts,

travel, and tourism industries; attention to the impact of outdoor recreation on the economy is long overdue.

Nude recreation is and has been part of the outdoor recreation industry. ARC estimates that our bigger and better financed partners contribute about $650 billion annually to the U.S. economy through sales of RVs, boats, lift tickets, campground and other fee area entrance fees, hunting and fishing licenses, and many other goods and services. We at AANR know that nude recreation contributes in a meaningful way to the local economies of cities, counties, and states where there are nude resorts or clothing-optional beaches and similar venues. We do not know, however, the dollar value of our impact on the economy. If we play our cards right, AANR will be able to contribute data to ORSA and will greatly benefit from the recognition that nude recreation is legitimate and will contribute to the local economies where we enjoy our way of life. AANR will also benefit from being able to document the dollar value of nude recreation when trying to establish and protect clubs, resorts, and other nude recreation opportunities.

The bill creating the accounts was passed in November. The ARC press release noted that ‘the U.S. Senate unanimously and without amendment passed the Outdoor REC Act!  The bill was led by Senators Cory Gardner (R-CO) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) with a total of 15 cosponsors.  The bill unanimously passed the House on November 14, where it was sponsored by Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA) and received bipartisan support, with 13 Republican and 12 Democrat cosponsors.’ Please consider thanking members of your Congressional delegation for voting in

support of the Outdoor REC Act.

Passage of the Outdoor REC Act makes it likely that the outdoor economy will receive official government recognition for years to come. It’s important to recognize the important role that federal agencies play in outdoor recreation, and managing lands and waters which host more than a billion recreation visits each year.  The Outdoor REC Act will not only aid Federal agencies to better manage public lands but will also help to inform a wide variety of audiences and decision makers about the importance of outdoor recreation to the U.S. economy. l

Tampa has hosted the Super Bowl four times, most recently in 2009 and 2001, and both times the vast Tampa Bay nudist community has benefitted from the big event. Florida’s Pasco County, located just 20 minutes north of Tampa’s Raymond James Stadium, is the unofficial nudist capital of America.

Fans in town for the Super Bowl stayed at Lake Como Resort, as well as clubs then affiliated with AANR, enjoying nude recreation in between trips downtown for pre-game events and the game itself.

In January of 2001, the Tampa nudist world unwittingly generated lots of publicity during Super Bowl week leading up to Super Bowl XXXV between the New York Giants and Baltimore Ravens.

Months before the game, Lake Como members scheduled a flag football game as their way to recognize the Super Bowl, figuring they’d get a dozen or so members to play an informal game the day before. Then, a week before the Super Bowl, the nude football game was mentioned in the “ScoreCard” section of Sports Illustrated as part of a brief listing of off-the-beaten-path Super Bowl events.

With 3,000 media members about to descend in Tampa, the phone at Lake Como began ringing constantly. Sabrina Vizzari, then the club’s 27-year-old general manager, appeared on three or four radio programs by phone each day leading up to the event. This being the early days of the Internet, reporters began calling for information and directions to the resort. To top if off, CBS News phoned to express interest in covering the event for Sunday’s pre-game national broadcast.

Vizzari, who figures someone at Sports Illustrated must have been perusing Lake Como’s early, bare-bones website and discovered the game, scrambled to make the event more official – or at least as official as a nude football game can be. She staged the inaugural “Buff Bowl” between the “Totally Tans” and the “Bare Buns,” even organizing cheerleaders and

a halftime show featuring trained dogs.

CBS reporter Bill Geist showed up with a camera crew shortly before the game on January 27, 2001 on a warm Saturday morning. About 300 people, mostly Lake Como members, were on hand. Geist’s report aired the morning of the Super Bowl and lasted nearly three minutes. He took a lighthearted but respectful look at nudism, mingling with the crowd, and capturing the jovial spirit of the day.

One player appearing in the broadcast, explaining the challenges of nude flag football said, “If you grab something and it doesn’t come off in three seconds, let it go.”

“I’ve heard of shirts versus skins, but this is ridiculous,” Geist said.

Though Tampa is not hosting this year’s Super Bowl and is not scheduled to host a future one – Minneapolis (2018), Miami (2019), and Atlanta (2020) have the next three – the Tampa Bay Buccaneers could, in theory, make it to this year’s Super Bowl.

This issue of The Bulletin went to press before the playoffs began on January 7, but the Buccaneers, who defeated the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl in San Diego following the 2002 season, were in position to return to the playoffs for the first time in a decade.

The Dallas Cowboys and New England Patriots, who have won nine Super Bowls between them, looked like the favorites to square off in Super Bowl 51 in Houston. Other contenders included the Seattle Seahawks, who have played in two of the last three Super Bowls, winning three years ago; and the Pittsburgh Steelers, who have won a record six Super Bowls, most recently in 2009. l

Super Bowl Sunday is an unofficial national holiday, one with a surprising number of nudist connections.

The NFLs championship game, which takes place this year on February 5 at Houston’s NRG Stadium, is an opportunity for nudist clubs and resorts to throw a big party in the middle of winter complete with food, drink, and (presumably) modest betting pools.

A number of Super Bowls have featured daring streakers dashing across the field during the world’s biggest sports event. The game also was the inspiration for perhaps the most high profile event in nude recreation. The Super Bowl of Volleyball debuted in 1971, the fifth year of the NFL Super Bowl, and has taken place annually at White Thorn Lodge in Pennsylvania, attracting more than 1,500 nude players.

When it’s Time for a Break From the Ordinary . . .Try DeAnza Springs Resort!

Dear Dave, Helen and Kim,

I want to thank you all for making my very first visit to

a clothing-optional resort so memorable. I chose wisely

when I decided to come to DeAnza Springs! I scored so

many firsts, there’s almost too many to list! Naked Bingo,

naked billiards, naked water volleyball, naked dog-walking,

naked dining, naked dancing . . . I could go on! What

an experience! I was so taken with it, I joined AANR the

very first day!Everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I was almost

immediately recruited by Angelisa for water volleyball, so I

gladly joined in, and now have the sore feet to prove it! :)

Austin, your bartender, is a great guy and a lot of fun, and

Frank and Ricky did a great job with meals. Kim is already

planning to find me a naturist girlfriend, and Jim, Laura,

Jim and Patty were very helpful with the nuances of naked

Bingo! They all showed me how the new guy doesn’t always

win! :) (I still can’t believe I played Bingo . . . naked!) Matt,

Gail, Hans and Dawn, were great fun to play naked billiards

with. Not all the balls were on the table! LOL!

I met so many wonderful people, and felt so comfortable

being nude, that I am planning to return as soon as

possible. Dave, thanks for the tip about Forrester Road.

It really saved me a good deal of travel time.

They say you never have a second chance to make a

good first impression . . . well, DeAnza Springs doesn’t

need a second chance, you certainly impressed me!

First, you need to determine your skin type. Do you have oily, combination, dry, or normal skin? If you’re still not 100 percent sure of your skin type, then consider the following factors.

OILY SKIN: You will have more breakouts and oil around the T-Zone (nose, forehead, and chin).

COMBINATION: You will also be oily or dry in certain areas, and have more blackheads.

DRY: You will have skin that appears flaky, red, and patchy at times.

NORMAL: Your pores will appear normal in size and your skin will have little to no imperfections.

Personally, my favorite skin care products are Mary Kay. I have been using their products for over 10 years and have always had clear

radiant skin. The TimeWise® line is amazing, affordable, and is available for all skin types. The TimeWise® moisturizer hydrates your skin for 10 hours, doesn’t have a weird smell like other products, and can reduce wrinkles over time. You can apply this before you go to bed or under your everyday makeup.

My other favorite product is actually oil instead of a moisturizer. You may think at first if you have oily skin, that this product may not be for you. However, this product is magic in a bottle and will help your dry skin become more supple and your oily skin to become “normal.” Jurlique oil from Sephora is paraben, sulfate, and phthalates free.  Some of the ingredients inside are primrose oil, macadamia seed oil, marshmallow extract, rose hip oil, safflower oil, shea butter, avocado oil, and jojoba oil all in one bottle! Whenever I have a dry

patch of skin on my face, I put this on overnight and it is gone by the morning. All you have to use are 2-3 drops and press it into your skin, rather than rubbing

it into your skin like a typical moisturizer. l

*Disclaimer: Products may contain nut allergens. Read the full list of

ingredients on the back of the box before applying.

Now that we are finally half-way into winter, we have to protect our skin. The harsh weather and wind

can take a toll on our delicate skin. The best way to combat these weather conditions in the winter is to

moisturize. Moisture is key to maintaining beautiful, supple skin. With so many products to choose from

out there, it can leave you wondering what exactly you really need for your skin.

22 THE BULLETIN | February 2017

Even to those who are used to seeing nudity in photography, the image is startling. A nonagenarian woman, dressed like a recent widow with a bulky double-lens camera around her neck, steps around a tree and

sees a stark-naked woman less than a third of her age. The young woman, her arms behind her back, turns to look at the old woman with a mischievous smile. The older woman crooks her finger under her chin, looking like she has caught a wood nymph frolicking through the forest.

To those who know nothing of the old woman, the young woman, or the woman who photographed them, the old woman may look shocked. But Imogen Cunningham was no stranger to nude photography. She had photographed men, women, and children nude all her life, and even took what we today call “selfies” in the altogether — also throughout her life.

After graduating from the University of Washington, Cunningham opened a portrait studio in Seattle and often exhibited her soft-focus prints in local galleries. She married the Seattle etcher Roi Partridge and had three sons with him. In 1914, she exhibited several photos of her husband in the nude on the slopes of Mount Rainier. The Seattle press was shocked — not because they were photos of a nude man, but because they were taken by a woman.

The family spent their summers in the high Sierra, spending their days nude if the weather allowed. Several of those

carefree days are recorded in her photos. She even took pictures of another family — a man, a woman, and their

toddler daughter — nude on the beach. Taken about 100 years ago, they are the earliest nude family photos I have ever seen.

About 60 years later, the famous landscape photographer Ansel Adams (an old friend of Cunningham’s) was holding a workshop with the theme Nude in the Landscape. The year was 1974, the place was Yosemite National Park, and the model was 28-year-old Twinka Thiebaud, the daughter of the famous California painter Wayne Thiebaud.

In addition to Cunningham and Adams, there was at least one other professional photographer present: 33-year-old Judy Dater, who specialized in the nude and, like Cunningham, often used herself as the subject. Dater was dedicated to challenging the norms

of the photographic representation of women. Before her iconic image of Imogen and Twinka, her most famous photo was of a plump nude woman holding a long panoramic group photo of World War I soldiers that had hung above her mantel. As Dater explained, “It was made with the idea that she was bragging about her conquests.”

Dater was annoyed at how the students swarmed around Twinka like paparazzi, just snapping pictures with no attempt at art, and decided to show them how it should be done. “It’s a twist,” she later said, “given that it’s two women looking at each other.”

The result became one of the most iconic photos of the 20th century. What Imogen Cunningham herself, who died two years later, really thought of it we’ll never know. But judging from her expression in Dater’s photograph, she appears to be saying “I wish I’d thought of that.” l

sizeism, anti-fat bias, weight-based discrimination,

weight prejudice, fat stigma, fat shaming, and body

shaming.

As nudists or naturists, our philosophy professes

that we accept people for who they are and

not what they look like. Yet the vast majority

of us have grown up in a society that

consciously or unconsciously harbors

erroneous judgments about those who

are considered overweight.

Research now shows that prejudice

against those considered obese

has not only increased but

is comparable to racial

discrimination in the U.S.,

and numerous professional

articles describe the

detrimental effects of

stigmatizing overweight or

obese people of all ages

and walks of life. Although

the American Medical

Association classified

obesity as a disease in

2013, there remains a vast

public perception that obesity is

a personal responsibility and choice.

Fatness is associated with laziness,

non-compliance with diet therapy,

lack of discipline, physical and sexual

unattractiveness, lacking willpower

and self-control, and possessing less

capability than normal weight people.

Being overweight is one of the

most common causes of childhood

bullying, and for adults, a common

but not legally protected basis for not being hired or

being passed over for a promotion. Overweight people

are subject to discrimination from health providers,

school personnel, employers, media, personal friends,

and family. And irrespective of one’s social status or

position, people who are obese are often subjects for

derision.

While fat shaming has long been considered an

appropriate and even necessary method for motivating

children or adults to lose weight, research has found

that stigmatizing or criticizing obese individuals has

just the opposite effect. Creating shame, blame, or

stigma often leads to, depression, self-loathing, social

withdrawal, increase in unhealthy eating patterns, and

poor food choices as a coping mechanism.

Therefore, how can we, as caring individuals and

nudists, begin to address this problem? First, examine

your own beliefs and biases and think about where

these perceptions came from. Next, compare your

beliefs with the statements below to help you determine

if you harbor weight bias:

weightbiastoomanyofushaveit

• You are never satisfied with your own body, even if you are not clinically obese

• You think being thin is a sign of control, success, or happiness

• You make fun of fat people or allow others to comment negatively

• You feel sorry for fat people, especially children

• In an airplane, you hope that you won’t have a fat person sitting next to you

• You believe overweight and obesity result from lack of control or will power or a character flaw

• Fat people revolt you

• Overweight or obese people are inferior to you

• You think it’s funny to tease people about their weight

• The best compliment anyone can pay you is saying how much weight you’ve lost or how thin you look

As you begin reflecting inward, you can also start

to become part of the solution. As a nudist, you

already belong to a population of like-minded people

who are more accepting of human body differences.

Learn to be compassionate. Become more aware of your

own negative attitudes and be assertive when you hear others

disparaging those who are obese. While it is true that excessive

weight can cause many health problems, and weight reduction,

when possible, is advantageous, understand that there are

overweight people who are healthy, productive, and possess

a positive self-image.

Finally, become familiar with some of the body acceptance

movements (for example go to www.bodyimagemovement.

com) that are promoting many of the same values that we

as nudists hold...especially that all bodies have equal worth.

Remember that every person has a body and a body image.

We may not look like socially idealized models, yet we are

comfortable, and accepting of one another in our natural

state without our clothing. If each of us could admit

to the world that we are nudists, despite our visible

imperfections, perhaps we could demonstrate a viable

and powerful path to better treatment and a better life for

those who are obese. l

it’saboutthewoodsot far from the hustle and bustle of D.C., Baltimore, and Annapolis, you can actually hike in the buff in 98-acres of primitive forest. Since 1934, old school nudists have enjoyed their commune with nature on the unspoiled

land owned by the Maryland Health Society, Inc., bordering the Patuxent River in Davidsonville, Maryland. This club has plenty of space for a lovely pool, sand volleyball, a clubhouse with a serious kitchen, and picnic tables on which they enjoy their culinary bounty. They even have a swaying suspension bridge as part of a nature trail!

Mark Delgado, the current president, described some of the club’s activities to me. We were there for the Seafood Festival, which drew over 40 hungry participants. The big events are the Backyard Barbeque which draws around 60 people, and the July Bull Roast, that pulls in about 200 people! They have free, open house events in June and August to introduce the curious to the delights of naturism. The club finances its existence with these fundraising events and the dues of the members, who may elect to work off a large portion of their fees by doing community service. This work can be almost anything, from building repairs, painting and cooking, to grooming the grounds.

The property is rustic and they like it that way. This is a quiet place. A retreat from the rigors of city life. A place to read a book or walk in the woods. All the people we met were easy to talk to, social, and very pleasant. We dined on the seafood at a large table, and never had a lull in the conversation. Not

a single disagreeable word. Everyone shared our common bond and was happy to be there. We met a few people who have sailed with us on Bare Necessities Cruises, and left with a couple of ladies sporting new Bare Necessities temporary tattoos! I’m sure some will be joining us on February 5 in Tampa for our next Caribbean sailing.

Although similar in acreage and only seven miles apart, this is the quiet, polar opposite of Pine Tree Associates which has nearly every amenity and activity known to nude mankind. Whatever floats your boat.

AANR membership and behavioral guidelines are required. It’s a small club. The members run everything themselves without paid staff, so call before visiting or there may not be anyone to open the gate. All members give four days of work a year to help maintain the club. Singles are invited within the boundaries of a 50/50 mix of male and female members. Find day fees and membership rules on their website. l

About the authorHarry D. Hanbury

Harry and Theresa Hanbury started as casual “hot tub” nudists in the mid 1970s and began cruising with Bare Necessities Tour and Travel in 1997. They eventually became cruise staff and now tour the country by RV, promoting both AANR and Bare Necessities nude cruises. Their home park is Edun Lake in Naples, Florida.

They are currently on a mission to visit as many AANR clubs and nude beaches as possible with the goal of informing everyone they meet about the importance of an AANR membership, and the joys of a nakation on a Bare Necessities Nude Cruise. There is much misinformation out there as to what is a true, nudist cruise that offers the comfort of AANR behavior rules, and some other types of cruise products in the marketplace. Please stop and say hello if you see them at your nude beach or club and get a free Bare Necessities koozie, temporary tattoo, brochure, or literature about AANR.

hen I think of the month of February, three celebrations come to mind.

Valentine’s Day, Mardi Gras, and the Super Bowl. At Abbott’s Glen

in Vermont, we create fabulous parties and dinners centered

around these themes.

If you are a New England football fan, then there is a pretty good

chance you will either be attending the game or watching it on

TV. As part of the latter group, we are going to enjoy some tasty

nibbles with a beverage or two, to root for our team. Since

eating wings is so messy, a dip with buffalo sauce and chicken

will satisfy without giving you those sticky fingers. How about

some deviled eggs? This recipe has the addition of avocado

and pickled jalapeno peppers.

The Benefits Antioxidants –The antioxidant content in chocolate is the most compelling reason to eat it. The polyphenols in chocolate have the power to stop free radical oxidation. Free radicals can damage DNA causing Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and cancer.

Resveratrol –This will help you age gracefully as it is known for its anti-aging properties (also found in red wine).

Magnesium – Chocolate is a rich source of magnesium, the most used mineral in the body. Many times a chocolate craving is a craving for magnesium. One ounce of chocolate contains 41 milligrams of magnesium. This essential mineral maintains muscle and nerve function, keeps the immune system healthy, maintains heart rhythm, builds strong bones, and is involved in roughly 300 chemical reactions in the body.

Anandamide – Chocolate produces anandamide in the brain — a neurotransmitter that blocks feelings of pain and depression while also improving memory.

It’s February and love is in the air! This is the month we show our sweethearts how much we love them with a gift of flowers, diamonds, and…..chocolate! If you think this is going to be an article about how to resist cravings for chocolate to keep your waistline (hello, New Year’s resolutions!) you’re wrong! I’m going to go ahead and tell you that you should eat chocolate — and you should eat it daily! Yes, you did read that right. Being in the spirit of the season of love, I thought I’d treat you all and tell you to eat plenty of delicious chocolate this month — and forever! There’s a small catch, but it’s minor and we will get to that later in the article. Let us start with some of the amazing benefits of chocolate.

1 cup unsweetened chocolate almond milk (or regular unsweetened almond milk)

1 scoop chocolate vegan Sunwarrior Protein powder (or chocolate grass-fed whey protein powder)

1 tbsp. raw organic cacao powder (I use Divine Organics or Sunfoods)

3/4 cup frozen dark cherries (could substitute strawberries)

1 tsp. of a greens powder or a handful of fresh greens

1/2 tbsp. raw organic cacao nibs

1/2 banana or stevia (optional)

Blend all ingredients except the nibs together in a blender. If you’d like it thicker, add more fruit or ice. If you’d like it sweeter, add 1/2 banana or some stevia. After blended together, add the nibs and pulse a few times. This will give the smoothie a crunchy texture and will almost seem like chocolate chips. If you don’t like that texture, simple blend longer or omit the nibs. Don’t worry, you won’t even taste the greens!

Superfood Chocolate Covered Cherry Sweetheart Smoothie

The CatchOk, so this is only a small catch because really, you’ll be happier and healthier in the end and it still tastes great. The only way to reap the benefits of chocolate is to eat it in the darkest and purest form. The best ways to achieve this is to use raw organic cacao. You can find this in the form of powder, bars, or nibs. This chocolate has no sugar and will taste bitter if eaten alone. You can sweeten it yourself in recipes. Add some stevia and you have a rich delicious chocolate treat. Second best would be to buy organic chocolate bars in the darkest you can handle (above 70 percent cocoa content). This will have a bit of sugar but it should be very low. The cacao powder can be used in any recipe that called for unsweetened cocoa powder. I enjoy throwing the nibs into smoothies, brownies, or a trail mix with dried fruit and nuts. See the following recipe for a yummy chocolate treat you can enjoy every single day!

at Solair Recreation Leagueby Nancy Greenhouse

Nudists can prove that less is more when it comes to textiles. But here at Solair Recreation League in Woodstock, Connecticut, the 2016 season proved that sometimes “more” is actually more.

In 2016, Solair garnered more press coverage than ever before — notably in non-nudist media. We put on more intriguing themed weekends like Magical Mystery Tour, Carnivale Rio, and Alice’s Wonderland. The events had with dinners, activities, and unique arts and crafts fun. We saw more sports participation including pickleball, shuffleboard, and the Summer Smash Volleyball Tournament, which drew nude players from far and wide.

More Young Nudists of America members visited Solair, including one dedicated weekend when cool, rainy weather could not dampen their enthusiasm. And – most exciting for any nudist resort – more visitors came through our gate than ever before, with more requesting interviews toward becoming Solair members!

The New Year has opened with our roads coated in bright snow and slick ice.Winter conditions only whet our appetite for the 2017 season. Enthusiasm is not hard to come by here, where “more” is actually more. l

he AANR-West regional board of directors met the first Saturday in November to review their ideas for 2017 and to approve a budget that will fund those

plans.  There are nine directors and four officers on this board, three of whom come from SCNA (myself, Rolf Holbach, and Ricc Bieber). Mike Glinzak and Tony Wilkinson are paid members of more than one regional club, and so co-represent Olive Dell Ranch and Glen Eden Sun Club respectively.  Other board members and officers hail from Hawaii and Arizona. Walt Stephens of Santa Barbara is the current president. Only four of the 13 have served longer than two years so it is almost entirely a new board with many fresh ideas.

AANR-West serves the eight western states, the western half of Mexico, and the Philippine Islands.  Most people do not know of the wide variety of programs and events that AANR-West does each year, and  communicating that work to the rank-and-file AANR members is one of the major problems board members share.

There are about 7,300 paid members of AANR in the region, about 1,800 of them not affiliated with any of the 30 clubs. Last year we re-organized the Club Liaison program that sends the

directors out to visit as many clubs as possible so we can talk to the members directly and hear their ideas and problems.  In 2017 this program will be expanded.

We feel it is very important the public learn what social naturism is versus what they may think it is. So, we will add to the number of  trade shows  where we will have a booth with literature for distribution to the general public. Last year we attended the L.A. Travel Show (50,000 attended), the Cal Parks and Rec Show (25,000 visitors) and the San Diego Earth Day Fair (about 10,000 people). This year we want to add some women-focused events, and perhaps expand into a local community fair or two.

At this meeting, the board retained an attorney  to represent us directly. We feel this will better serve our regional needs and also help our members when a local problem arises.

Another exciting idea we will introduce in 2017 is linking all the 5K runs held at several large clubs into a region-wide program with prizes for those who race at multiple clubs. Watch for an announcement about this soon.

We have already begun using  social media  much more extensively than in

years past and you will see a real effort to increase our presence on Facebook, Twitter, and similar sites. We will launch a new rewritten www.aanrwest.com  website containing information about all the clubs’ activities plus other features of interest.

The board is also rethinking how our  Youth Camp and Student Scholarship  programs are managed after several years of low participation.  A review of these programs will be on our agenda at our March Board Meeting.

We also agreed to meet more often, but via a monthly  Go2Meeting telephone conference  to save travel expenses.  Walt Stephens started this as an experiment last year and the monthly calls help all of us stay on track with our tasks. We agreed we will continue these call and encourage the various committees to use Go2Meeting on their own to do the detail work that otherwise might bog down a general meeting.  We also want to invite all AANR clubs to join us on these calls if they are interested ( just email us in advance so we can get you the date, time, and password).

We left the meeting feeling much buoyed in spirit about what this energized board will be doing for its members next year. l

New Bulletin Photo Guidelines

The Bulletin is ready to take the next step in the ongoing transition to produce an improved quality product for our members. In preparation for this next step, we will need help from our clubs and members who submit photographs to The Bulletin. The new guidelines are necessary to give you the quality product that you deserve.

The image size must be at least 5” x 7” with a resolution of 300 DPI. Most cameras can be adjusted to a higher resolution that will meet these requirements. We also are aware that these photos will be larger files and may have to be submitted one or two at a time when attached to an email. Please remember that we will need a photo release for everyone in the photo. You may download the release from the AANR website or call the office and one will be emailed to you. Please email your photos with your articles to [email protected]. Club Happenings photos should be sent with your copy to [email protected]. The April deadline is February 20. We will no longer accept photos that do not meet the new criteria.
