In terms of Plan outlay, it was only Rs. 26.54 crore in the Sixth Plan and rose to 207. 45 crore in the Seventh Plan, mainly due to the Asian Games 1982; it was Rs. 210 crore in the Eighth Plan; Rs. 472.61 crore in the Ninth Plan; and Rs. 1145.36 crore in the Tenth Plan.

The requirement projected for the Eleventh Plan is Rs. 7, 108.15 crore.

Broad-basing has not been achieved due to the low spend on the sports sector, which is less than 0.2% of the plan budget

Financial assistance will be provided @ Rs.30,000/- per discipline per district for conducting district level competitions in the following approved sports disciplines :-

1. Athletics; Archery; Football; Hockey

2. Kabaddi; Kho-Kho; Tug of War

3. Volleyball; Weight Lifting; Wrestling

Note: Apart from the above sports disciplines states can also hold competitions in the local indigenous sports disciplines for which a grant @ Rs.30,000/- per discipline per district will also be admissible.

Only Mizoram and Tripura sent proposals last year. Received Rs 3.2 lakh and Rs. 8 lakh, respectively
