e Issue 9 12 hay 1986 Monday Sports Banquet One of the Best Ever By Dee Jon Douglass The annual sports banquet was held on April 29th in the cafeterium. The banquet was sponsored by the Coahoma Athletic Booster Club who did an excellent job with the decorations and procedure. Starting a little after 6:00 pm, Rositas Fajitas catered the banquet with various types of Mexican food. Guest speaker Ronnie Flowers was a very humorous man who gave a speech with some very good points. Mr. Flowers sells athletic supplies for a living, and from his jokes he seemed to know our faculty quite well. After humoring the audience, Mr. Flowers began to talk about having goals. We said, "You can't be anything you want to be. You can't be Miss America if your momma had to borrow a baby to go to church on Sunday." Becoming more serious, Mr. Flowers mentioned that it was necessary to have attainable goals. The second point that he made was that you had to have a plan of action in order to attain your goals. Making the point of leading, he stated, " There are three kinds of people: Those who make something happen, those who watch things happen, and those who wonder what happened." The rest of the banquet which is normally dull and boring did not seem that way this year. Each coach pro- ceeded to call out his team members, briefly mentioning their accomplish- ments. Coach Kelso seemed to have the most trouble with stage fright and forgetfulness. There were several special awards given in each category during the night. Cesar Gellido started off the night with the MVP award for tennis. Doubles team Candy Joiner and Vikki Moore received MVP, while Karen McCoy was recognized for being the most improved. Coach Nichols gave the golf MVP awards to Mandy Sepeda and Greg Moore. Coach Nichols expressed his feelings about playing golf in March, com- menting on the blowing wind and the condition of the "greens." [cont'd on p.2] Rodney Gee(fighting heart),Darell Aberegg (outstanding defensive back), Ben Neel (MVP track), Jody Reid. Ronnie Flowers(guest speaker), Coach Kidd, Lisa Kidd. Ronnie Flowers was an excellent speaker. Although he told numerous jokes, he got across the point he wanted everyone to understand. His message was that everyone should set goals for themselves, that goals can be reached with a little determination, and that everyone should work together for certain goals, such as district championship. The meal was served buffet style by "Rosita's Fajitas." The main courses were tamalas and tacos. Spanish rice and refried beans were also served with the meal. Mr. Flowers also shared some of his youth with us. He told us about his years in High School, how the town was, the school, and the people of his commumity. Ronnie Flowers was wel- comed warmly by Coach Kidd. We are very glad that he was the speaker. The awards ceremony followed.
