Effingham defeats Olney 4-2 in 12 innings in regional opener

Kadi Borries recorded 11 strikeouts on the mound as she helped Teutopolis escape Ca-sey-Westfield for the regional championship Saturday, 3-1.

She threw 90 pitches in the complete game; 70 of them for strikes. She allowed just three hits and the one run.

She was also the offensive star for the game, going 3-for-3 at the plate and driving in two runs.

Borries’ first RBI came in the second inning when her single drove home Danielle Repking, who had tripled. The duo teamed up again in the fourth when Bor-ries doubled Repking home.

The Lady Shoes earned their final run off a Julie Wente sacri-fice that allowed Tara Stephens to make it home.

Casey-Westfield scored its lone run in the seventh.

Repking went 2-for-2 at the plate and was walked once.

The Lady Shoes’ record im-proved to 18-5 after Saturday.

The Lady Shoes were sched-uled to take on Fairfield in game one of the Teutopolis Sectional Tuesday but it was canceled due to weather.

Teutopolis defeatsMarshall, 7-0

Kadi Borries did it with her arm and her bat in the postsea-son opener.

On the mound, Borries tossed a one-hit shutout, striking out 12.

At the plate, she blasted two home runs and drove in three.

That combination helped the Teutopolis Lady Shoes post a 7-0 victory over Marshall.

Borries first homer was a two-run shot in the first, taking T-Town to a quick lead. She added a solo blast in the sixth for her team’s final run of the game.

Alison Apke and Tara Ste-phens also had home runs in the victory.

Meghan Woltman led the Lady Bulldogs to another softball re-gional championship Saturday as they defeated Stew-Stras 5-1. Woltman pitched seven innings, giving up four hits and one run with seven strikeouts.

Hunter Niebrugge got things going in the first inning for the Lady Bulldogs when she hit a line drive to left field that drove in Morgan Gardewine and Makayla Walsh for a 2-0 lead.

Walsh scored again in the third inning off a base hit by

Kate Richards. In the fourth, DJ Brummer rocketed the ball deep center to give Woltman that chance to score, giving St. Anthony a 4-0 edge.

Woltman returned the favor in the fifth with a line drive to left field to bring Richards home for their final run of the game.

A St. Anthony error in the sixth inning gave Stew-Stras the opportunity to score its only run of the game.

Lady Bulldogs winregional crown

It took 12 innings Monday night for Effingham to put away Olney in a 4-2 victory in the teams’ first game of the postsea-son.

Devin Mayfield pitched all 12 innings for the Hearts, giving up a total of nine hits.

Olney got on the board first following a fly ball to center field that drove in the run. With the bases loaded directly fol-lowing the first run, Mayfield walked the Olney batter to give them a 2-0 edge.

A Trent Frey fly ball to right field gave Effingham the open-ing to cut into the lead when Dirk Levitt raced from second base to home for the run. Dirk Levitt scored once more off a double by Frey in the fourth to tie the game.

Mayfield saved the day for the Hearts in the top of the 12th inning with a sacrifice fly to drive Carter Hayes home. With Frey at first and Dirk Levitt at second, Adam Koester hit a line drive to right field to drive in Dirk for the second run of the inning and provide the two-run margin.

Frey went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs.

With the win, Effingham was scheduled to play Salem on Wednesday. Another win will put the Hearts in the regional championship game on Satur-day.

Effingham is now 17-13 over-all.

Hearts drop regular season finale

Effingham faced Centralia in a doubleheader Saturday to end their regular season, but it didn’t go the way the Hearts had hoped.

They fell in game one 5-2, and then dropped a narrow 8-7 decision in the nightcap.

Khye Heuerman tried to spur the Hearts to victory in game one, going 1-for-3 at the plate and recording an RBI.

Centralia got on the board early in the first game, scoring three runs in the first inning, including a two-run home run. The Orphans then scored two more runs in the fourth inning.

The Hearts finally answered in the sixth inning. Heuerman hit a hard ground ball to third base, giving Drew Levitt the chance to score from third. A ground ball to second base by Devin Mayfield helped Trent Frey make it home.

Centralia got on the board with two runs in the first inning, both coming from passed balls. Effingham took their first lead in the third inning, jumping out to a 3-2 lead. Nathan Vail capped the rally with a two-run homer.

The Orphans responded quickly, tying the game in the third off a Hearts error. A Brayden Bone double and Dirk Levitt base hit allowed Effing-ham to once again take the lead, jumping ahead 5-3. They scored twice more off a Drew Levitt double and a hit by Hayes for a 7-3 lead.

Centralia answered in the bot-tom of the fourth, scoring four runs to tie the game at 7-7. A fly ball to left field in the seventh inning gave Centralia the open-ing they needed to earn the win Saturday and close out the regu-lar season play.

The Hearts ended the regular season with a record of 16-13 on the year.
