MUN Conference

Last Tuesday, the St George’s College Model United Nations (MUN) Society participated in a conference hosted by St John’s College. There were 12 schools in attendance and 20 countries represented. Each delegation presented speeches for or against the involvement of the United Nation (UN) in their designated country. This was followed by a session focused on recent UN involvement in Yemen. Delegates presented and debated clauses drafted for a resolution aiming to resolve the Yemen crisis. Our delegates left the event with a greater awareness of challenges faced by the UN and its current relevance and effectiveness.

Unconvincing win for U15A

Saints batted first against Churchill in a T20 game last Saturday but too many batsmen gave their wickets away after making promising starts as the team strug-gled to a disappointing 131 for 7 in their 20 overs. Only Bawa with 54 could claim to have batted with any re-sponsibility. Churchill's bowling was good but not spe-cial.

Saint's bowling performance was much improved over the previous week and the opposition batsmen were easily contained. Adams and Chikopa both picked up 2 wickets for 20 runs as Churchill stuttered to 107 for 6 in 20 overs.

The final result a win by 24 runs.

TENNIS ST GEORGE’S V HELLENIC ACADEMY

U14 The team played much better tennis and emerged the winners in this encounter. We took three of the four doubles and five of the eight sin-gles matches. The second couple of N Senzanje and C Mapenzauswa and the fourth couple of O Chinyanga and S Baker had comfortable wins. They also cruised past their opponents in the singles. Final result: St George’s College 8 Hellenic Academy 4

U15 Even though the result went to Hellenic Academy, the team made a better showing. T Samupambadze had a good day in the office winning the doubles with his partner T Mhembere and dispatching his opponent in the singles. There is need for the team players to work hard at achiev-ing physical and mental endurance as well as skills development. Final result: St George’s College 3

Interhouse Squash Results Overall : 1st place - Gardner 24 pts 2nd place - Johanny 17 pts 3rd place - Barthelemy 15 pts 4th place - Hartmann 9 pts NB : There was no U14 age group because two houses could not field any players. This is very disappoint-ing. There were also two no shows which was particularly disappointing as we extended the competi-tion until Wednesday 27th. They were U17 and U18 in Barthelemy. There were some extremely close matches and two draws which made it very exciting. Well done to those who did participate.

New Books “The Young Magicians and the Thieves’ Almanac”

by Nick Mohammed

On a London street, four unlikely friends stand before the astonishingly ordinary-looking blue door of the Magic Circle . . . Alex doesn't say much, and once jumped when handed a satsuma, but, wow, is he amazing with a deck of cards. Zack is undoubtedly one of the best pickpockets in the country (but always puts things back). Sophie once convinced her Brown Owl that all the other Brownies were jellyfish thanks to her nifty hypnosis skills - and then never returned. Jonny - who is quite possibly the tallest boy in the universe - mixes science and magic with spectacular consequences (mostly explosions). Join these young magicians as they step inside the world-famous conjuring club in an adventure that may or may not involve the search for a secret book, a set of impossible crimes and . . . oh, yes - a flock of very confused pigeons.

“Lord of the Flies” Director’s Report By Ms. Kyla Render

I am so proud and so very fortunate to be able to say that this year’s production of “Lord of the Flies” was my first pro-duction at Saint George’s College. Although we got off to a shaky start, dealing with rehearsal and commitment issues; too months and one postponement later the cast and crew really pulled the show together and put on a stellar perfor-mance. As the play was requested by the Upper 6s, the connection to and identification with the script gave us a huge advantage in being able to stage the show so successfully. I would like to thank the cast, crew and their families for their commitment and dedication; especially those of the Form 4s and Lower and Upper 6s, who gave up precious study time and fought to take part. A special thank you also to the staff and students of the College for their patience and support of the production; it is really you that made it such a suc-cess. For what is a show without an audience? Although Drama does not work in quite the same way as Sporting Events, I would like to take this opportunity to nomi-nate some “Men of the Production”. These cast and crew members really went above and beyond to ensure that the pro-duction was as good as it could be, sacrificing hundreds of holiday and study hours between them, special mention needs to be made of:

Zvikomborero Muhau (Cast; Form 2) Steven Sigauke (Cast; Form 2)

Milivoj Hrkalovic (Design, Construction, Crew; Form 3) Carlton Mapundu (Design, Construction, ASM; Upper 6)

Lord Of The Flies Report By Thulani Nzonzo On Wednesday, the 14th of September, 2017, St. George's College held its opening night performance of William Gold-ing's Lord of the Flies and thus begun a successful three day run, ending in rapturous applause and critical acclaim. I think that it is fair to say that the talent of this year's cast surpassed anything that we could have imagined. Overall, each performer put in considerable effort, regardless of whether they had only a minor role in the background, digging a hole on the beach or attempting to lead and maintain sanity and order amongst a group of savages. Munyaradzi Nzenza, Shin-gai Musasiwa, Tadiwa Govere Steven Sigauke and Ryan Mutore deserve special commendation, as it was their first time treading the boards of the College stage, in their roles in the main/supporting cast. The crew, well lead by Stage Manager Anotida Ndachena and Assistant Stage Manager Carlton Mapundu deserve just as much credit for their incredible work behind the scenes; without which we would not have been able to make the show the success that it was. Countless rehearsals, line readings and blocking sessions from the 2nd Term and August holidays not only helped us bring the play to life but allowed us to bond as best as a cast and crew can do during any successful production. Despite various drawbacks throughout the rehearsal period, (including an unfortunate parting with 3 of our actors) the boy's de-termination to do the College and themselves proud pulled us through. And though it goes without saying that no good play can be put on without a great director, the show simply would not have happened without the incredible guidance, dedication and passion of our director, Miss Render. The entire cast and crew is and always will be grateful for the amount of work that she put in, in order to make sure that we put on a show worthy of the school's stage.
