The Frenchman, a 13 times winner on two wheels and four, fin- ished fourth on the shortened 348km stage from Al Qaisumah to Ha’il. Closest rival Nasser Al Attiyah of Qatar was third and trimmed Peterhansel’s overall lead to five minutes and 53 seconds going into today’s rest day. Sainz clawed back seven and a half minutes from Peterhansel, his second stage win of the event leaving the 58-year- old triple champion still a hefty 40 minutes adrift in third overall. Toyota’s Saudi driver Yazeed Al Rajhi finished the stage second. The stage was reduced by 100km, with a deferred start, after a significant number of competitors suffered navigational problems on Thursday. Australian Toby Price took the lead in the motorcycle standings with Spaniard Joan Barreda securing his third stage win of the event. Two times champion Price, on a KTM, moved two minutes and 16 seconds clear of Honda’s Argentine overnight leader Kevin Benavides. Honda rider Barreda finished 13 seconds clear of Botswana’s Ross Branch on a Yamaha with Aus- tralian rookie Daniel Sanders third. Price finished the stage seventh with Benavides, who broke his nose in a fall on Thursday, losing nearly 10 minutes to Barreda. Defending champion Ricky Brabec of the United States was 13th overall. Today is a rest day with the 12-stage rally finishing in Jeddah on Jan. 15. Prioritise athletes for vaccine so Tokyo Games can go ahead: IOC member REUTERS – TOKYO Athletes should be prioritised for the novel coro- navirus vaccine so the beleaguered Tokyo Games can go ahead later this year, according to senior Olympics official Dick Pound. Canadian Pound, the longest-serving member of the International Olympics Committee (IOC), told Sky News in the UK that the Games could still go ahead with mass athlete participation, but only if they were vaccinated. “In Canada where we might have 300 or 400 athletes - to take 300 or 400 vaccines out of several million in order to have Canada repre- sented at an international event of this stature, character and level - I don’t think there would be any kind of a public outcry about that,” Pound told Sky News. “It’s a decision for each country to make and there will be people saying they are jumping the queue but I think that is the most realistic way of it going ahead.” During his visit to Tokyo in November, IOC President Thomas Bach said ath- letes would be encouraged to get the vaccine but it would not be mandatory for their participation in the Games. Separately, Pound told the BBC the ever- changing nature of the coronavirus pandemic meant nobody could be sure whether the Games would go ahead in less than 200 days. Over 15,000 athletes from almost every country in the world are expected to descend on Tokyo for the Olympics, which start on July 23, and the subsequent Paralympics. QSL: Edmilson Jr. nets four as Al Duhail crush Al Wakrah 8-1 CHINTHANA WASALA THE PENINSULA Belgian Edmilson Junior enjoyed a mesmerising four- goal haul while Brazil interna- tional Dudu scored a hat-trick as Al Duhail crushed Al Wakrah 8-1 in their Round-13 encounter yesterday. All four of Edmilson's goals for the QNB Stars League title- holders came in the first half (2, 10, 16 and 19) . Dudu added 2 more goals (2, 9) to put the host ahead by a margin of 6-1 at half time. Mohamed Benyettou scored the only goal for Al Wakrah in the 45+1 before Al Duhail continued to thrash hapless visitors with goals from Almoez Ali (70) and Dudu (71 penalty) to seal a dominant win for the Red Knights who moved on to 27 points, eight behind leaders Al Sadd. It was their ninth win of the season. Following one of the biggest losses in QSL, their eighth defeat this season, Al Wakrah remained on 13 points at the 10th spot in the standings. The QSL fans were for- tunate to see goal fests on consecutive days as the action of the 13th week ended in a flourish after Al Sadd, powered by a four-goal haul by Algerian international Baghdad Bounedjah, blanked Al Kharaitiyat 8-0 on Thursday. Yesterday, at Al Duhail Stadium, the reigning cham- pions were up by four goals inside 10 minutes and they built on the brilliant start to script a big victory against the Al Wakrah team who had beaten them 1-0 in the first leg. Al Duhail's Bassam Al Rawi was elated after the big win ans credited coach Sabri Lam- ouchi's tactics for the team's success. "Thank God on the victory achieved and we succeeded in controlling the match since its beginning and we scored in the 2nd minute the first goal, and this came after we implemented the coach's instructions. He asked us to put pressure on the ball carrier and not to give Al Wakrah players spaces to move and build attacks," Al Rawi said. Al Duhail's next opponent will be the high-flying Al sadd and Al Rawi is confident ahead of the high-octane Round-14 clash. "We are waiting an important match against Al Sadd and thank God the team is ready. God willing we will con- tinue our good performances and our distinguished results in the next round," Al Rawi said. Elsewhere, Al Arabi con- tinued their excellent form by defeating Al Ahli 1-0 in another QSL clash which took place at Al Arabi Stadium. Mohammed Salah El Neel netted the winner in the 20th minute as Al Arabi, coached by Heimir Hallgrimsson, regis- tered their fourth successive victory, having beaten Al Kharaitiyat 3-1, Al Sailiya 1-0 and Al Khor 3-0 in Week 10, 11 and 12 respectively. The Dream Team moved on to 18 points with their fifth victory overall. Umm Salal defeated Al Khor 1-0 in the third match of the day. Mourinho calls on PL not to postpone Tottenham gamesREUTERS – LONDON

Jose Mourinho (pictured) called on the Premier League to avoid further postponements over COVID-19 concerns, with Tottenham Hotspur’s game at Villa Park next week in doubt after 10 Aston Villa first-team players tested positive.

Mourinho’s side have already had one league game postponed, against Fulham after a rise in coronavirus cases among Scott Parker’s squad, and the reverse fixture with their London rivals in April will be moved after Spurs reached the League Cup final.

“It’s the moment for the Premier League to show leadership, to make decisions. A club like us is trying everything every day to be ready to play, to follow the rules we have in our hands,” Mourinho said before tomorrow's FA Cup third round trip to eighth-tier Marine.

“If we don’t play against Aston Villa, that will be three matches postponed, and that will be impossible. After the season we have the Euros (due to begin on June 11), and of course the Euros are

not going to be moved,” the Spurs manager added.

Mourinho said his entire squad has tested negative in the latest round of checks, despite Brentford boss Thomas Frank testing positive after Spurs’ League Cup semi-final win over the Champi-onship side.

Forward Gareth Bale could feature against Marine after recov-ering from a calf injury and training with Spurs first-team players yesterday.

“Gareth told us he would like to go, he would like to play, so, if tomorrow

the feelings are positive, he will come.”

Steve Smith scored Australia’s first century of the series to drive the hosts to 338 all out but India stood firm with 96 for two to leave the third Test in the balance at the end of the second day yesterday.

India spinner Ravindra Jadeja took 4-62 and brilliantly ran out Smith for 131 to end Australia’s first innings before tea and the home pace attack managed only to oust India’s openers before the close of play.

The obdurate Cheteshwar Pujara, unbeaten on nine, and his captain Ajinkya Rahane, who had scored five not out, will resume India’s innings on day three as the tourists look to break the 1-1 deadlock in the four-match series.

That task looked a lot easier while Smith was struggling for runs but after scoring only 10 in his first four innings of the series, Australia’s best batsman redis-covered his form at his home ground.

Overcast conditions con-tributed to a muted atmosphere at a Sydney Cricket Ground pop-ulated by a socially distanced crowd of 9,052 all obliged to wear face masks.

They were all on their feet in the early afternoon, however, as they joined a delighted Smith in celebrating his 27th test century and first since the 2019 Ashes in England.

T h e f o r m e r captain, who hit 16 fours in an all b u t chance-

l e s s k n o c k , had a nervous

spell on 99 before turning the ball off his hips to square leg for three runs.

“It’s always nice playing at the SCG,” said Smith. “It’s my home and I love playing here, it was nice to put a score on the board and help Australia.” The frailties in the remainder of the Australian batting were plain to see, however, after Jadeja had broken Smith’s promising 100-run partnership for the third wicket with Marnus Labuschagne, who was caught in the slips for 91.

Resuming on 166-2, Australia would have been looking to bat through much of the day for a tally well in excess of 400 but they lost their last seven wickets for the addition of only 132 runs, most of them scored by Smith.

Matthew Wade departed for 13 after a rash charge down the wicket and skipper Tim Paine, all-rounder Cameron Green, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon barely bothered the scorer before fol-lowing him.

Fittingly, Jadeja had the last word, showcasing his fielding skills with a direct hit from square leg to run out a diving Smith and close the Australian innings.

“Our approach tomorrow should be simple -- to spend time in the middle,” Jadeja said. “Eve-rybody needs to contribute and bat with responsibility if we are to put up a good total.”

More questions over fourth India Test after Brisbane lockdown

REUTERS – SYDNEY

Brisbane went into three days of strict lockdown yesterday as the government tries to contain a more contagious variant of COVID-19, raising more doubts about the Gabba hosting next week’s fourth cricket Test between Australia and India.

The city’s two million residents will be barred from leaving their homes for anything but essential business after a worker at a quarantine hotel in the city tested positive for the new strain of the virus first detected in Britain.

The news will do little to ease widely reported con-cerns in the Indian touring party over what level of isolation they will be forced into when they leave Sydney for Queensland on Tuesday.

The series is tied at 1-1 and Australia were dis-missed for 338 just before tea on the second day of the Sydney Test yesterday.

The Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI) has made no comment on the Brisbane lockdown but yes-terday retired batting great Sunil Gavaskar articu-lated the concerns of the team during TV commentary.

“In Sydney, there are people coming to the ground and then going back and having dinner at a restaurant or having a gathering of 20, 30 people in a pub,” he said on Channel Seven.

“What they (the team) are saying is they should also be allowed to do something similar.

“The Queensland government is fully entitled to protect its people. Similarly I believe the BCCI is fully entitled to protect its team. I think that’s something we should never forget.” Queensland’s state Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has already assured the Indian players that they will be able to mingle with each other inside the team hotel, as they have been in Sydney.

“Still talking,” was her only comment on the Test during her news conference on the lockdown yesterday.

Meanwhile, three Big Bash League (BBL) matches originally scheduled to be played in Sydney have been moved to Canberra due to state border closures after an outbreak of COVID-19 in Australia’s biggest city.

Victoria has closed its border with New South Wales because of the outbreak, meaning the players would not be able to play in Sydney and then move on to play the following round of matches in Melbourne.

Steve Smith of Australia celebrates scoring a century during day two of the third Test match against India in Sydney yesterday.

Kenin reaches 3rd round in Abu Dhabi after Flipkens injury

AP – ABU DHABI

Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin reached the third round of the Abu Dhabi Open yesterday after opponent Kirsten Flipkens injured her ankle and had to retire.

Flipkens won the first set 7-5 and was trailing 5-4 in the second when she jumped to play a shot and landed against an advertising board behind the baseline. Her left ankle twisted underneath her.

“I obviously got a little bit upset, quite emotional. We’re good friends and that’s not something you like to see. I just hope she has a speedy recovery and gets ready for Australia,” Kenin said. “This is not the way I wanted to win.”

Kenin said she had wanted to cross to Flipkens’ side of the court to help her, but couldn’t because of social distancing rules limiting contact between players during the coronavirus pandemic. Kenin said the advertising board was too close to the court.

Flipkens broke Kenin’s serve five times in the first set, including breaking the American to love in consec-utive service games to take the first set after Kenin had served for the set with a 5-4 lead.

Kenin will play either 13th-seeded Yulia Putintseva or Barbora Krejcikova in the third round.

Also, the 15th-seeded Ons Jabeur beat Kateryna Bond-arenko 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. Jabeur, an Australian Open quarterfi-nalist last year, will play either fourth-seeded Aryna Sabalenka or Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round.

Sofia Kenin PSG to develop new footballing

philosophy, says PochettinoREUTERS – PARIS

Paris Saint-Germain will develop a new footballing philosophy as they aim to win an eighth Ligue 1 title in nine years and their first Champions League crown, new coach Mauricio Pochettino said yesterday.

“PSG’s goal is to win games. There are no other objectives. We also have an idea, a foot-balling philosophy and a structure that will lead us to victory,” he said ahead of his second game in charge at home to Stade Brest in Ligue 1 on Saturday.

Pochettino, who replaced Thomas Tuchel during the winter break, had an under-whelming start with a 1-1 draw at St Etienne.

PSG, who are still without Neymar because of an ankle injury, are second in the table on 36 points from 18 games, three behind Olympique Lyonnais.

“We know we have to adapt to the circumstances, we have a lot of injuries at the moment,” the 48-year-old Pochettino added at a news conference, underlining a problem that also plagued PSG under German

coach Tuchel in the first half of the season.

While Pochettino wel-comes back striker Mauro Icardi and full backs Layvin Kurzawa and Alessandro Florenzi, he is still without midfielder Rafinha and defender Juan Bernat.

Centre-back Presnel Kim-pembe and midfielders Danilo Pereira and Leandro Paredes have also not yet shaken off their injuries. They will however not be rushed back

to fitness, said Pochettino.“I hope to recover the

injured players quickly, to con-tinue the work started. We have to adapt, and above all analyse and listen to the players and the medical staff who were there when we arrived,” he said.

“You have to work for the club, and that means thinking about people. We will try to improve every aspect that can be improved, but we must pay attention to the players and their needs.”
