MORE THAN BLACK HAWK: NATIVE AMERICANS IN ILLINOIS HISTORY As area residents celebrate the 200th anniversary of Illinois as a state many are doing historical research to gain a greater appreciation of our past.

But while reading most historical accounts of Illinois, one finds very little record of the first Illinois residents — the Native Americans who occupied the area for hundreds of years before the arrival of European immigrants. With the exception of the Black Hawk War, and passing references to Cahokia and Dickson Mounds, few historians offer more than a glance at Native American history in Illinois.

The idea for this course is to look at some of the forgotten aspects of Native Americans in Illinois, their ways of life and their place in history. This course is offered as an introduction to the further study of Illinois tribes and to encourage people to take the opportunity to look into the history of the state’s first inhabitants and the impact of Native Americans on it. Fee: $30

THE BIG SHADOW: HOLLYWOOD FILM NOIR It was a dark, slow night, and I didn’t have anything useful to do, so I signed up for a Community Outreach class at Spoon River College. “Film noir,” it said. The only French I knew was a yellow mustard, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I was hoping to learn about this classic American subgenre of crime films, its origins, the heyday of its popularity, and its legacy in movies today. With any luck, I could watch clips from some film noir classics and have a chance to discuss the art form. But my luck was about to change, because that’s when she walked in… Fee: $30

PROMOTING TEAMWORK Good teamwork does not naturally occur in the workplace, but being a good leader can help make it happen. It is important for managers to learn ways to help build up your team to make your business more efficient and successful.

COLLABORATION Collaboration is when two or more individuals or groups work to reach a goal. Collaboration is important in the workplace because it often happens with individuals from different departments allowing for better brainstorming, looking at goals from different perspectives, and uses the strengths of each individual. Collaboration will allow your employees to learn from each other.

GOAL-SETTING Reaching a goal is one way to make an employer feel empowered. As a manager it is your responsibility to set goals that are challenging yet attainable for an employee. The right mix of those two qualifications will create a motivated and high performing work place.
