Principal’s Note October is coming to a close and the fall weather is definitely here! As the days get shorter and cooler, our students are working towards the end of the first term. Teachers have sent out interim reports to inform you of your child's progress and we encourage you to support your learners at home to complete tasks, seek help and keep their aendance up. Have a look through this month's newsleer to see some of the work being done by the students and staff of SHSS. We are very proud of the learning we see in our building and we encourage you, as parents, to stay involved in your child's school experience. Our first term ends on November 7 th and report cards will follow on November 21 st . We also really hope that you feel free to communicate with your child's teachers regarding any quesons or concerns about their learning. We will be having Parent-Teacher conferences on Thursday, November 24 th from 5 to 7 and we hope to see you here. Thank you for being a part of the SHSS community! We were fortunate to have storyteller and author, Ivan Coyote, visit SHSS on October 5th. With a capve audience of 250 students Ivan told stories that brought home the importance of kindness and tolerance amongst students. Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:30 is archery me at SHSS. If you are interested in learning how to shoot or to improve your skills, come and join the club! In July of this year, 8 students from Stanley Humphries were selected to parcipate in the Castlegar-Embetsu Educaonal Program Exchange. The delegaon enjoyed a homestay with a Japanese family as well as travel to Sapporo, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Yokohama/Kamakura and Tokyo. We appreciate the great job our SHSS students did as ambassadors of Castlegar in Japan! The Physics 11 class got outside to see some real life applicaons of their studies on gravity and accel- eraon with their bole rocket pro- ject. Mr McKay was proud to re- port that learning was successful and that no one got hurt! READING TIME! Our Grade 8 Humanies classes have now completed the District Reading Assessment. This assessment allows teachers to get some baseline informaon on students' reading strategies, comprehension and analysis. The RAD will be repeated in the spring to check for progress and growth in our readers. If you are interested in knowing more about your child's reading as- sessment, please contact their Humanies teacher. Our Grade 9 English classes will be involved in the District Wring Assessment in the coming weeks. Logs to Lumber, Ore to Iron Our Sustainable Resources and Metalwork clas- ses have been working together to create pro- jects that use both wood and metal. Logs are milled on site using our WoodMizer and then metal components are integrated into the student's own designs. Come and see our display of projects by the office! CO 2 CARS Grade 9 mechanics students completed their CO 2 cars. They competed against each other with the fastest car trav- elling over 100 km an hour!! This is just a sample of the amazing art coming from Ms. Barnes' classes. Come take an art walk through our hallways! SHSS's Got Talent! Although we do not have exact numbers, at least 500 people came out to take our haunted tour, with non-perishable donations to the Food Bank of approxi- mately $600. Huge thanks to the following organizations and folks who helped to make this event possi- ble: City of Castlegar and Castlegar & District Heritage Society, Castlegar and Tarrys Fire Departments, Trowelex, No Frills, Safeway, Kootenay Market, RCMP, our many parent volunteers, and the people that came to our haunted tour.
