ASEAN GALA DINNER 2015
The ASEAN Gala Dinner 2015 is a celebration to laud the Chairmanship of Malaysia and to herald the
integration of ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in December 2015.
The inaugural Gala Dinner will be hosted in Washington, DC due to its prominence as a center of
influence, embodying the Members of Congress and Government Relations Representatives from the
Fortune 500 Companies. The Gala is poised to be an excellent avenue for Malaysia, Chairman and ASEAN
Ambassadors to interact in an unofficial forum with Members of Congress and Government Relations
Representatives. This networking forum will provide an avenue to promote AEC as well as to build on
goodwill relations.
The significance of a continuous engagement by the Chairman to assuage the Members of Congress to
enhance trade relationships with ASEAN is in tandem with the objectives of the Trans Pacific Partnership
Agreement. A strong partnership between Members of Congress and Government Relations
Representatives with the ASEAN Community is key and in support of AEC’s vision of being a global
economic player. Ironically, about 30% of the Members of Congress have full command of the trade
symbiosis between AEC and the United States. Therefore, it is imperative that the Chairman of ASEAN to
benefit from this event by engaging with the residual 70% of the members of the Congress to discuss the
importance and inherent benefits of the trade partnership with AEC and its potential impact on their
constituents’ economies.
The District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia region nestles most of the Government Relations
Representatives of Fortune 500 Companies. They are a significant sub-set of the socio-economic circle of
influence, with the purpose of advocating for business and trade policies benefiting the industries they
represent. Fortune 500 Companies such as Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, AOL, Gannett, Hilton
Worldwide, Leidos, Marriott International, Carlyle Group, Danaher Corp and Discovery Communications,
to name a few - are headquartered in this region. Additionally, the trade value in the District of Columbia,
Maryland, and Virginia is $600 billion deriving from federal government, aerospace, information
technology, biotechnology and advanced manufacturing industries. The policy makers from this region
and industries have significant influence in the flow of investments into ASEAN and the Chair may want to
consider engaging with them aggressively.
The significance of AEC and its trade possibilities should also be articulated beyond the sphere of
Washington, DC to include the 50 States and Territories. Currently, only 5 States enjoying trade in excess
of $4b or more ASEAN. There are 45 States and Territories that AEC needs to aggressively promote to.
The information presented is to illustrate the compelling trade opportunities for the Chair to promote
Malaysia and AEC to the American populace.
This Gala Dinner would be an excellent avenue for Malaysia, Chair of ASEAN to demonstrate leadership in
engaging with the circle of influence to convey the message of the economic prosperity that is available
through AEC and to further enhance trade and commerce partnerships with the United States of America.
Malaysia could usurp the power of the Chair to propose and advance the dialogue of establishing the
framework in setting up the ASEAN Caucus to the Members of Congress to champion trade, security and
economic cooperation with AEC and the United States.
This inaugural Dinner is to celebrate and promote the Chairmanship of Malaysia and the milestone of
ASEAN integrating into the global economic community through ASEAN+1 and RCEP.
ASEAN Gala Dinner 2015
ASEAN is represented by ten (10) countries; Malaysia,
Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand,
Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos, PDR. The
Member States’ unity and support for the endeavors of
ASEAN is embodied in the ASEAN flag. The colors of the
Flag – blue, red, white and yellow – represent the main
colors of the flags of all the ASEAN Member States,
symbolizing a united and dynamic ASEAN. The blue
represents peace and stability. Red depicts courage and
dynamism, white shows purity and yellow symbolizes
prosperity. The stalks of padi in the center of the
Emblem represent the dream of ASEAN's Founding
Fathers for an ASEAN comprising all the countries in
Southeast Asia, bound together in friendship and
solidarity and finally, the circle represents the unity of
ASEAN.
On November 2014, Malaysia Prime Minister Dato’ Sri
Najib Razak in accepting the Chairman of ASEAN from
Myanmar President Thein Sein articulated the vision of
“People Centered ASEAN.”
The ASEAN motto this year is “One Vision, One Identity,
One Community” and appropriately, the ASEAN 2015
logo represents
1) the ten curved elements around ASEAN logo
represents the harmony, close partnership and
aspiration of the people from the ten ASEAN countries
achieving shared vision,
2) the atomic molecular loop denotes the progress
in science and technology bringing economic and
prosperity and
3) the multiple colors represents the diversity of talents
in propelling the countries forward. The launch of the
AEC at the end of 2015 will be one of Malaysia’s priority
to ensure the successful implementation of AEC and
raising the profile of AEtowards the full integration with
the global economy.
The year 2015 is the milestone for both Malaysia and
ASEAN’s standing, as it is in a strong position to push
through important features of the AEC and set forth
the strategy for the 10 years post AEC phase of ASEAN
community. The Gala Dinner will be an excellent
avenue for Malaysia, Chairman of ASEAN, and the rest
of the ASEAN Ambassadors in unison articulating the
AEC vision and advancing the trade and commerce
partnerships with the United States of America.
The ASEAN Gala Dinner 2015 is a celebration
to laud the Chairmanship of Malaysia and to
herald the integration of ASEAN Economic
Community (AEC) in December 2015. The
inaugural Gala Dinner will be hosted in
Washington, DC.

This inaugural Dinner is to celebrate and promote the Chairmanship of Malaysia and the milestone of
ASEAN integrating into the global economic community through ASEAN+1 and RCEP.
Today ASEAN is represented by ten (10) countries;
Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines,
Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos,
PDR. The ASEAN combined market has over 625 million
consumers with GDP approximately USD$3 trillion.
In 2007, the Leaders of ASEAN Countries affirmed
the commitment in establishing ASEAN Economic
Community (AEC), creating ASEAN a single market,
highly competitive economic region with equitable
development and fully integrated into the global
economy. ASEAN will be a regionally integrated
economy in 2015.
ASEAN as a single market is implementing dynamic and
innovative economic initiatives to accelerate the ASEAN
and “ASEAN+1” integration into the global market.
The “ASEAN+1” free trade agreements with the People’s
Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Korea,
Australia, New Zealand and India, will position ASEAN
the center of global supply chains through strong trade
relationship these countries.
ASEAN is also negotiating the Regional Comprehensive
Economic Partnership (RCEP), an FTA involving ASEAN
and its six FTA partners. The ASEAN-led agreement,
expected to be concluded by the end of 2015, will allow
ASEAN to mutually benefit from economic partnership
with its FTA partners. With a combined GDP of about
US$21.2 trillion, which is about 30% of global GDP, the
RCEP also has the potential to transform the region into
an integrated market of about 3.4 billion people (or 48%
of the world’s population).
