Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Mabo High Court Decision on Native Title

In June 2012, the city of Townsville will mark the 20th Anniversary of the High Court

of Australia ’ s landmark Mabo decision and Reconciliation Week with the two-day

Townsville Reconciliation Festival.

The festival is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and

recognises an important chapter in Australia ’ s history: the Mabo High Court

decision.

On 3 June 1992 the High Court of Australia delivered its landmark Mabo decision

which legally recognised that Indigenous people had a special relationship to the

land and nullified the notion of “ terra nullius ” which had been used to describe the

land as unoccupied prior to colonisation. This recognition paved the way for

Indigenous land rights known as Native Title. June 2012 marks the 20th Anniversary

of this decision.

In addition to this significant anniversary, this time of the year is also a time for all

Australians to reflect on our shared histories, contributions and achievements during

Reconciliation Week.

To celebrate, the community will gather for the Townsville Reconciliation Festival –

a series of community events that aim to promote reconciliation, encouraging people

from all cultural backgrounds to get involved and recognise these significant

moments in Australian history.

The Townsville Reconciliation Festival will also play a role in assisting to educate the

community about the national Closing the Gap targets which aim to close the gap

between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in the key areas of early

childhood, schooling, health, economic participation, healthy homes, safe
