Digital technologies have the power to rewrite every aspect of health care. In anticipation of this seismic shift, one of Canada’s most vibrant online communities came together five years ago to help reimagine health care through a health technology lens.

over those five years the Health Care and Social media Canada (#hcsmca) community has brought together health communicators, researchers, practitioners and patients from across Canada through a collective vision to drive social collaboration for better health and health care.

weekly #hcsmca Twitter discussions have tackled everything from putting health care onto election agendas, to encouraging celebrities to get involved in health promotions, to exploring the true nature of health care privacy. although the community is mostly “virtual”, over the years face-to-face meetings (called tweetups) have occurred in cities across the country. but never before has this national group come together to solve a big e-health problem. until now.

on February 24, 2016, #hcsmca will host a nation-wide symposium as a pre-event of the well-established Quality Forum. it is an opportunity to bring together national thought leaders for a full-day problem-solving workshop.

participants will explore how digital communications impact quality of care, support patient-provider co-design, contribute to research and knowledge translation, and lead to interdisciplinary decision-making. They will tackle specific issues as determined by the #hcsmca community — and work together to put forward solutions. after the event, materials will be created to document how organizations across Canada can use digital communication to improve the care that they provide for patients.

The #hcsmca is a national, mature and connected online community that has coalesced over five years of weekly online conversations. Past meetups, primarily hosted in Toronto, have consistently drawn 100+ participants with simultaneous livestreaming and a dedicated hashtag, extending its reach across Canada and beyond.

WHAt iS #HcSMcA?#hcsmca is an inclusive network for all Canadians passionate about health and health care. It is a cross-disciplinary community with core values of respect, diversity and openness. Although #hcsmca’s geographical focus is Canada, its global reach makes health care more open and connected. It was founded by Torontonian Colleen Young in 2010 and has grown to include almost 17,000 participants.
