The inaugural Quality Awards Program was launched by NBMLHD in 2012. The program aims to recognise the outstanding achievements of staff who contribute to quality improvement in the delivery of healthcare services across the Local Health District. It provides an opportunity for staff to showcase the outcomes of quality improvement projects and share their successful initiatives with colleagues across the District. It also creates an essential environment for staff projects and initiatives to be recognised by the Board, the Executive and the wider community.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District staff rise to meet the challenges of a constantly changing healthcare environment with new and emerging technologies by continuing to engage in quality improvement projects and initiatives designed to address the healthcare needs of patients in a diverse community.

A look back

2013 NBMLHD Quality AwardsThe NBMLHD District Quality Awards 2013 celebrated quality and safety initiatives across the District. The response from staff was overwhelming with a large number of nominations reflecting an impressive variety and quality of services provided and highlighting staff enthusiasm and commitment to the delivery of exceptional healthcare. 150 guests and 24 nominee teams attended the Quality Awards ceremony which was held on July 17. Nominations demonstrated high calibre, staff-driven projects and initiatives with focus on quality improvement, patient outcomes and cutting edge research. A team of judges reviewed and assessed 24 projects to award nine winning teams with plaques, and nine highly commended teams for their impressive efforts.

Of last year’s projects, a team of dedicated Mental Health clinicians won the Patients as Partners category award for their initiative, Implementing an Assertive Community Treatment Team, and then went on to win the Minister for Mental Health Award for Excellence in the Provision of Mental Health Service at the prestigious 2013 NSW Health Awards.

Today, or not today? Emergency surgery within 24 hours, a Clinical Redesign Project, won the Chairman’s Award for Safety and Quality by exceeding the NSW benchmark for patients requiring surgery within 24 hours.

Friendly bacteria (probiotics) saving tiny lives, a Neonatal Intensive Care Project, was awarded the Chief Executive’s Medical Research Award for pioneering research in the use of probiotics with infants, and was also nominated as a finalist for the 2013 NSW Health Awards.

Winners of the 2013 Quality Awards, in the Patients as Partners category, Bethany Pade, Enrique Albornoz , Helen Hallett, Colin Rath, Kirrily Warner , Joanna Luczak-Kaczynska, Stanley Capouski and James Adriganc have made significant improvements to Mental Health services by working collaboratively with consumers (top right).

Their project ‘Implementing an Assertive Community Treatment Team to support consumers with a serious mental illness to live a life of their choosing in the community’, continues to support Mental Health consumers to live a fulfilling life and to reduce the number and length of hospital admissions. Just one year after the project was introduced there was a marked decrease in length of stay and number of acute admissions for these consumers. Bed days (length of stay) were reduced from 3022 to 569 and the average admitted bed days per patient were reduced from 79 to 15. The project has produced excellent outcomes for consumers who previously needed long and multiple admissions by creating the possibility for them to stay in their own

environment and engage in meaningful activities.

Dr Girish Deshpande, Dr Lyn Downe , Dr Vijay Shingde, Dr Marcel Leroi and Jing Xiao were the highly anticipated winners of the Chief Executive’s Medical Research Award for Innovation with their project ‘Friendly bacteria saving tiny lives’, which researched the prevention of a deadly bowel condition common among premature babies through probiotic supplementation (bottom right).

Since the introduction of routine probiotic supplementation in the Nepean Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), no babies have contracted the deadly decease. Specialists from across the country and around the world have approached Dr Deshpande’s team to ask how they can implement probiotic supplements in their NICUs. This project was hand-picked by Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District Chief Executive, Kay Hyman, for promoting innovative medical research and driving clinical improvement within the Local Health District.
