This years fair theme of Expect the Unexpectedbecame more than anyone could have imagined with the pres- ence of COVID-19. A portion of the Spokane County Interstate Fairs mission statement states that we will Serve as a showcase of the talents of our community by providing a means of education, exhibit, and competition. We look forward to a return of our traditional fair in 2021, however, we invite you to participate in our virtual fairthis year. All entries for 2020 will be submitted online, judging will be done online, and comments from the judges will be shared with the exhibitor through e-mail. Thank you for your continued support of the Interstate Fair! 1. Entries, with the exception of photography, are FREE! 2. Exhibitors may reside in any U.S. State or Canadian Province. 3. This year’s fair theme of “Expect the Unexpected” became more than anyone could have imagined with the pres-ence of COVID-19. 3. PHOTO ENTRIES:

• Photography Department entries must enter through the website listed within that department’s infor-mation. The steps below are for the Fair’s other departments.

• Photos should be submitted in a jpg format.

• Place a solid white background behind your entry. If your entry is mostly white (i.e. cake frosting), then please select a different solid background color.

• E-mail photos (with information listed below in #5) to [email protected].

4. VIDEO ENTRIES:

• The only department accepting entries utilizing video this year is 4-H. See following page for specific requirements needed in the video.

• Submit videos via Google Drive at drive.Google.com. After uploading your file, please send an e-mail to [email protected] with the link and include the information listed below.

Create a Google account or if you already use Gmail, you can use your login information to ac-cess drive.Google.com. If under the age of 13, 4-H members are asked to have their videos submitted through their parent / guardian’s account.

Once Google Drive is open on your desktop, click “New” then “File Upload”. This will open your file browser to search for the file you are wanting to send. Click on the file then click “Open”. Another option is to drag and drop the file into the Google Drive window on your phone app.

Wait for the file to upload making sure you have a strong internet connection. Do NOT close the window while uploading or the process will be canceled.

Right click on the file name and click “Share”.

Type “[email protected]” in the “Add people and groups” field, type in your name in the “message” field, then click “Done” or “Send”.

5. Include the following information in the body of your e-mail:

• Name (first and last)

• Mailing Address (include city, state, and zip)

• Phone Number (in case we have questions)

• Age (if 18 or under)

• 4-H Club (if submitting a 4-H Presentation)

• Description of What was Entered

6. You will receive a confirmation e-mail from the Fair Staff within 24 hours of the entry being received (a little long-er if submitted over the weekend). If you do not receive one, please call the office at 509.477.2772.

Electronic submission is preferred, however, if you do not have access to a device to submit your entry electronically, please mail your color photo (3” x 5” or 4” x 6”) to Spokane County Interstate Fair, 404 N Havana St Ste 1, Spokane Valley WA 99202-4663 BEFORE the deadline date listed for your department. Include a sheet with all information requested in #5 above. The Interstate Fair also has a mailbox at the Fair Office that allows you to drop off your entry if that is more convenient for you. Photos will NOT be returned to the exhibitor unless a self-addressed, stamped envelope is included with the entry.

• Begin video with introduction (name, age, 4H Club) then a description of the garment you have sewn and are wear-ing.

• In the video be sure to answer the following questions (in any order as part of your commentary) -

Why did you choose this project?

What type of fabric did you use?

What was the hardest part of constructing your garment?

What was the cost to make the garment?

What would have been the cost if it had been purchased in a store?

What new skill(s) did you learn?

• Model your garment moving in a traditional “T” pattern (walk front, slow full turn, walk to left, stop and turn to center of stage, walk to right, stop and turn to center of stage, walk to center, 180 turn hold momentarily, and then return to starting location making a final 180 turn to face the audience).

• Video ends with you stating what your impromptu question was an answering the question. As the video is meant to be educational...feel free to research your question prior to filming the video.

NON-COOKING DEMONSTRATION OR PERFORMANCE:

• Contact [email protected] ASAP to “pre-register” for this event. You will be given an “impromptu question” to incorporate into your video when you pre-register.

• Videos must not be longer than 8 minutes. Any videos longer than 8 minutes will be disqualified.

• Vocalists and musicians may have an accompanist for the performance, however the accompanying music should not overpower the performer.

• Begin video with introduction (name, age, 4H Club) then a description of what you will be doing / performing (i.e. playing the piano).

• In the video be sure to answer the following questions (in any order as part of your commentary) -

If musical performance (vocal or instrumental), name of the song, composer, and year it was written.

How long have you been studying this area?

• Video ends with you stating what your impromptu question was an answering the question. As the video is meant to be educational...feel free to research your question prior to filming the video.

COOKING / BAKING DEMONSTRATION:

• Contact [email protected] ASAP to “pre-register” for this event. You will be given an “impromptu question” to incorporate into your video when you pre-register.

• Videos must not be longer than 30 minutes. Any videos longer than 30 minutes will be disqualified. Do not include a video running during baking time...think of this as TV cooking show magic. Have a completed item ready in the ov-en, place your item ready to bake in and take the completed one out making sure to tell the audience how long the item baked.

• Begin video with introduction (name, age, 4H Club) then a description of what you will be making.

• In the video be sure to answer the following questions (in any order as part of your commentary) -

Where did you get the recipe (or was this your own creation)?

Utensils, pans, etc. needed.

Ingredients used along with the amounts (i.e. 3/4 cup granulated sugar).

Estimated prep time, cooking / baking time, and clean-up time. You do not need to include the actual clean-up process in your video.

• Video ends with you stating what your impromptu question was an answering the question. As the video is meant to be educational...feel free to research your question prior to filming the video.

2020 Theme: Expect the Unexpected.

Each exhibitor is allowed up to two entries.

Each entry must consist of three photos: Front of exhibit, side of exhibit, and a photo

showing the exhibitor with the exhibit.

Exhibit must be an original design of the exhibitor and created by the exhibitor.

Individuals in the same family may not make entries of the same exhibit.

Cake will be judged on decorations alone thus exhibitor may utilize Styrofoam or cake

to serve as the base for the decorations.

Although a white background for the photo is typically preferred, please utilize a differ-

ent solid color behind the cake if the cake is mostly white frosting.

PRIZES: Best Decorated Cake Winner (Youth) and

Best Decorated Cake Winner (Adult) will each receive $25.00.

4-H Exhibitors are encouraged to submit an entry in each of the following classes:

• Fashion Revue

• Non-Cooking Demonstration or Performance

• Cooking Demonstration

Make sure the video is well-lit and does not include any background noise.

Dress as if presenting live in front of the judge and audience.

Exhibitors must be currently enrolled in 4-H (list 4-H Club with your entry).

Exhibitors will be scored on their video submission (see more information in “How to

Submit an Entry”); age of exhibitor will be taken into consideration in scoring.

PRIZES: Each of the Three Class Winners will receive $25.00.

4-H PRESENTATIONS

Spokane has some of the finest breweries in the Nation and the Spokane County Interstate Fair is pleased to offer an opportunity this year to showcase them!

Open to adult exhibitors only. Each exhibitor is allowed one entry. Entry must consist of a small loaf and include the recipe for the bread. By entering the contest, exhibitors agree to release recipes to the Spokane County Interstate Fair. Recipes may be published by the Fair. The bread must include one full can / bottle of a locally-brewed crafted beer, IPA, hard cider, pilsner, lager, etc. Local to be defined as brewed within 150 miles of Spokane. Bread will be judged on size, uniform shape, crust, crumb, grain, lightness, tenderness, and flavor. Bread and recipe must be submitted to the Fair Office on September 10 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. PRIZE: Best Beer Bread Winner will receive $25.00.

BEER BREAD CONTEST

DECORATED CAKES

The world is changing around us and the way items are manufactured is changing as well. This competition is NEW in 2020 and features creations made by the inventors amongst us. Create a design, print it on your 3D printer, and show us your great ideas / creations!

Contest is open to youth exhibitors only. Please be sure to include your age with your entry. Judges will take age into consideration in scoring. Exhibitor is limited to 2 entries per person. Displays may show any topic of an educational nature. Exhibit sizes may range from poster (22” x 28” minimum) to tri-fold display. Entries must include two photos: Photo of the educational poster and one of the exhibi-tor next to the educational poster. Entries must be created since September 1, 2019 and entered by the creator. Exhibitor’s name cannot show in the photograph. Judging will be based off of design (40%), originality / creativity (20%), and educational value (40%). PRIZES: Best Overall Educational Poster will receive $50.00. 1st Runner Up Overall Educational Poster will receive $30.00. 2nd Runner-Up Overall Educational Poster will receive $20.00.

KIT CRAFT by JAB

Theme: Expect the Unexpected.

Each exhibitor is allowed one entry and may choose one of the three following categories –

animal, person, or space creature.

Exhibitor must provide the name of the exhibit with their entry, i.e. Sally the Salamander.

Each entry must consist of two photos: Front of exhibit and a photo showing the exhibitor with the exhibit. Exhibit must be created by the exhibitor and an original design made from vegetables,

fruits, flowers, grasses, and/or other organic materials.

Individuals in the same family may not make entries of the same exhibit.

PRIZES: Best Exhibit 10 and Under Winner will receive $25.00. Best Exhibit 11 to 17 Winner will receive $25.00. Best Exhibit 18 and Over Winner will receive $25.00.

The Fair’s Junior Advisory Board (JAB) Members have put together kits for you to take, make at home, and enter into this year’s Virtual Fair! JAB consists of 16 high school representatives from around the region that meet monthly to provide ideas and input as well as gaining leadership skills through the program. For more information on representing your High School, please contact [email protected].

Contest is open to youth exhibitors only. Please be sure to include your age with your entry. Judges will take age into consideration in scoring. Kits may be picked up from the Junior Advisory Board Members at the Fair Office on August 11 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Each exhibitor is allowed up to one kit / one entry. CREATURE FEATURE

EDUCATIONAL POSTER

Exhibitor is limited to 5 floral entries and 5 dahlia entries per person. All entries must be a single flower. Flower does not need to be cut from the plant to be entered into the virtual fair. Photo must include the floral entry with a white background and a photo of the exhibi-tor holding (or next to) the same exhibit in a second photo. Entry photos are due on or before September 3. Artificial flowers and foliage are not permitted. Entries must be grown and entered by the exhibitor. Individuals in the same family may not make entries from the same plants. Flowers will be judged based upon perfection for their variety. Winning flowers will be selected based upon the top three scores. PRIZES: Best Overall Flower Winner will receive $50.00. 1st Runner Up Overall Flower Winner will receive $30.00. 2nd Runner-Up Overall Flower will receive $20.00.

Exhibit must be an original design of the exhibitor(s) and made by the exhibitor(s).

Individuals in the same family may not make individual entries of the same exhibit.

Exhibit must contain at least 1,500 pieces (adult), 500 pieces (youth), and 2,000 piec-es (family). Include estimated number of pieces with your entry information.

PRIZES: Best Adult Exhibit Winner will receive $25.00. Best Youth Exhibit Winner will receive $25.00. Best Family Exhibit Winner will receive $50.00.

BEST GARDEN

Sponsored by Jennifer’s Auto

Each exhibitor is allowed one entry.

Pumpkin must be grown and entered by the exhibitor.

Pumpkin must be brought to Jennifer’s Auto (15020 E Sprague Ave, Spokane Valley

WA 99216) on September 9 (2:00 to 6:00 p.m.) for weigh-in.

Pumpkin will be off-loaded, weighed, photographed, and returned to the exhibitor on

the same day. Exhibitor will remain in their vehicle during the process.

Pumpkin must not be tampered with in any way to add additional weight.

PRIZES: Largest Pumpkin Winner will receive $100.00.

First Runner-Up Largest Pumpkin will receive $60.00.

2nd Runner-Up Largest Pumpkin will receive $40.00

This year, many have had the opportunity to spend a little extra time in their gardens. We would love for you to share a photo of your garden showing just what a Green Thumb you have!

Each exhibitor is allowed one entry PER garden. Entry photos are due on or be-

fore September 3.

Garden must be grown and entered by the exhibitor.

Individuals in the same family may not make entries of the same garden.

Exhibitor must provide a “map” of garden illustrating where each type of plant

is located within the garden. All plant types must be labeled on the map.

PRIZE: Best Garden Exhibit Winner will receive $50.00.

LARGEST PUMPKIN

LEGO CONTEST

Exhibitors are permitted to enter as many photographs as they desire.

Entry Fee (Amateur and Youth): $5.00 per photo. Enter five and receive 2 additional

photo entries FREE.

Entry Fee (Professional): $10.00 per photo (no free entries).

Entry fees will be utilized to create a jackpot.

Youth have the option to enter in the youth-only lots as well as enter in the open catego-

ry but the same photo cannot be cross-entered.

PAYOUT: The top three winners in each lot will receive cash awards based off of the jackpot (not to exceed $100, $60, $40). An ad-ditional People’s Choice Award will be chosen by a social me-dia campaign - Winner will receive $50.00.

Theme of Table Decorating Contest is “Expect the Unexpected”.

Each exhibitor is allowed one entry.

Each entry must consist of three photos: Completed exhibit, menu, and a photo showing the exhibitor with the decorated table.

Individuals in the same family may not make entries of the same exhibit.

This year, exhibitors may choose to enter a table with two to four place settings.

The table may be any size but should be balanced with the number of settings chosen for the exhibit.

Menus will be used to determine if the correct serving utensils, plates, bowls, cups, etc. have been utilized in the design. Menus are also included as part of the artistic nature of the ex-hibit and exhibitors are encouraged to refrain from using hand-written menus.

PRIZES: Best Adult Exhibit Winner will receive $25.00 Best Youth Exhibit Winner will receive $25.00.

QUILTS

The Spokane Interstate Fair is pleased to partner with Quilts of Valor to create this year’s Block Contest. Today over 220,000 quilts have been given to U.S. military service members and veterans who have been touched by war. Volun-teers donate their time and materials to piece the tops and quilt the life-time awards that state through their beauty “Thank you for your service, sacrifice, and valor.” The blocks from the 2018 Interstate Fair were crafted into a beautiful quilt and awarded to the Fair’s Steam and Gas Superintendent, Myron Fuller on September 11, 2019. Mr. Fuller served in the United States Army and is a World War II Veteran. In 2019, 28 quilt blocks were donated…thank you!

Entries must be completed by the exhibitor since September 1, 2019. Exhibitor must incorporate red, blue, and true white in their quilt block. Block sizes must measure 12.5” as sewn and will finish at 12” when area Quilts of Valor volunteers put the quilts together . Blocks should be placed in a gallon-sized clear storage bag (i.e. Ziploc) and delivered to the Fair Office on September 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Staff will meet you at the Fair Office and you will not need to exit your car. All blocks become the property of the Quilts of Valor program and will be sewn together to create a quilt for deserving veterans.

PRIZE: Best Overall Quilt Block Winner will receive $25.00.

Entries must be completed by the exhibitor since September 1, 2019.

Please indicate on your entry if the quilt was machine-quilted by the exhibitor, ma-chine-quilted by someone else, hand-quilted by the exhibitor, hand-quilted by some-one else, tied by exhibitor, or tied by someone else.

Quilts must include three photos; complete front, complete back, and close-up of a corner of the quilt showing the borders and binding.

Exhibitor must list the size of the quilt on the entry.

Small quilts are at least 36” tall and wide. Large quilts must be a full-sized bed.

PRIZES: Best Overall Large Quilt Winner will receive $60.00.

Best Overall Small Quilt Winner will receive $40.00.

QUILT BLOCKS

TABLE DECORATING

Each exhibitor is allowed up to 3 entries in each class. Each entry must consist of two photos: Photo of exhibit and a photo showing the ex-hibitor next to the exhibit.

• Class 1 (Tractors) – only those tractors that have been refurbished since Septem-ber 1, 2019 or are “NEW” to the owner this past year will be permitted to enter.

• Class 2 (Antique Displays) – entry must contain a written description / history of the display to further education of our heritage.

PRIZES: Best Tractor Winner will receive $25.00. Best Antique Display Winner will receive $25.00

TRACTORS / ANTIQUES

WINE LABEL

Each grower entering the competition must bring their hay to the Fair and Expo Center on Wednesday, September 9 between the hours of 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. Please enter the Main Gate Off of Havana Street and proceed northeast to the Green Gate.

Only one (1) entry per field. Entry may consist of three small bales (100 pounds or less) or one large bale (800 to 1200 pounds).

Core samples will be taken at time of delivery with the help from the Small Farms Depart-ment / Extension Office.

Grower will be able to take their hay home immediately following the core sampling.

Core samples will be sent to Soiltest Farm Consultants, Inc. in Moses Lake for analysis.

Final selection of the competitor for "Top Hay Producer" will then be based upon the per-son who receives the highest composite score.

Judging and hay analysis evaluations will be based on the following factors - Scoring in-cludes (1) Test (relative feed value, standard score by each class equals 100%, all entries as a % of standard with 100% maximum, and (2) Visual (ideal for each class, % of ideal, criteria judged on stage of maturity / foreign material / steminess / leafiness / leaf hold / condition including smell / mold / texture / excessive moisture / color / bale appearance).

Noxious or poisonous weeds or any evidence of tampering so as to influence or change either the hay analysis or scoring procedures will be just cause and reason to disqualify a competitor (i.e. use of any substance not normally used in the hay making process - col-oring or ammonia are not legal, but preservatives are legal).

PRIZE: Top Hay Producer will receive $50.00 and a belt buckle.

Each exhibitor is allowed two entries.

Each entry must consist of two photos: Close-up of the wine label and a photo show-

ing the exhibitor holding the bottle of wine (label forward).

Label may be attached to an empty or full wine bottle.

Standard wine label is preferred but custom-sized will also be accepted.

It is optional to have the name of the winery or the type of wine on the label.

Wine labels must be “family-friendly”.

Labels will be judged under the following criteria: creativity, originality, workmanship,

and appearance of display.

PRIZE: Best Wine Label Winner will receive $25.00.
