Dear Friends:
Welcome to Wilmington Rowing Center's 271 Diamond State Masters Regatta! In 19841 WRC Board members Howard Smith and John Schoonover put their heads together to create a large regional Masters regatta sponsored by Wilmington Rowing Center. I was fortunate to have both gentlemen as my first volunteer coaches when I rowed as a junior for WRC in 1991, the year of the inaugural regatta. The memory of Howard Smith is ever present here. John Schoonover, a former St. Andrew's School coxswain, assisted by his alumni connections was able to locate this event at the beautiful Noxontown Pond venue. Interestingly, while most masters' races are 1000 meters, Diamond State's course is about 1070 meters, so be ready for seven extra strokes.
It has been exciting to see this regatta transitioning itself to a new second generation of rowers and organizers. We continue to grow with over 500 entries and 12 referees. The rowers and volunteers are a mix of people from Generation Y, X, Baby Boomers and the Greatest Generation, who work hard to host a successful Diamond State Masters Regatta.
We hope you find racing at the Diamond State Masters Regatta exciting. It also brings national attention to Middletown, Delaware, and spurs economic development for the area. Please check out the vendors and local businesses. In addition, please support the sponsors and advertisers who are key to the financial success of the event. If you have a business of your own, I encourage you to join us by considering an advertisement next year.
The Diamond State Masters Regatta helps to offset the cost of two scholastic programs for Concord and Charter-Wilmington, and 150 master rowers. WRC has grown from its humble beginnings to purchase, retrofit and maintain an 8,000 square feet boathouse located on the Wilmington Riverfront.
I would especially like to thank the DSMR committee, support from local businesses, hard work by all our wonderful volunteers, the participating clubs, rowers, the Boy Scout troop directing traffic and of course St. Andrew's School for its picturesque racing venue. Enough cannot be said about everyone's positive disposition and willingness to make DSMR a well-run and competitive USROWING sanctioned regatta.
Lastly, we are always looking to improve this regatta. Participants and volunteer staff, please share your thoughts on the regatta and possible areas of improvement. Your ideas and observations help us improve DSMR every year. We hope you enjoy a great weekend of racing.
Yours truly,
John L. Williams

Howard M. Smith represented everything that is truly outstanding about the sport of rowing—leader-ship, dedication, selflessness, and committment. If that weren’t enough, he was one of the finest gentlemen I have met, in or out of the rowing community.
At Cornell, Howard stroked the ‘48 and ‘49 varsity eight and participated in the 1952 Olympic trials. Later he coached at Rutgers University for five years. In 1960 he began a long, distinguished carrer as a rowing official.
Fortunately, Howard’s employment with duPont brought him and his lovely wife Jean to Wilmington, Delaware—once home to five fledgling rowing clubs in the mid-1870s, but none since then.
In 1984, he co-founded the Wilmington Rowing Center in a small auto-body shop on the banks of the forgotten Christina River. Under his faithful guidance, the Center grew and expanded into a two-bay boathouse

built on land leased to WRC by the city of Wilming-ton. This June, the Center purchased and moved into a renovated building at 501 A Street, across from the Wilmington Youth Rowing Association.
In 1991, Howard and I co-founded the Diamond State Masters Regatta held on the tranquil waters of Noxontown Pond at St. Andrew’s School in Middle-town, Delaware. Now in its 25th year, Diamond States has become one of the premier Masters regattas in the country. More than 1,000 rowers participate over two days in fifty-five events. In 1999 the regatta was named in Howard’s honor to recognize his many contribu-tions to both Wilmington Rowing and the Diamond State Masters Regatta®.

To the Competitors, Organizers, Volunteers and Sponsors:
The Willy Foundation is honored and privileged to once again sponsor the Diamond State Masters Regatta. It occurs to me this year that many of you may not who we are or what we do. For the long version, please see our website at www.the willyfoundation.org. To put it more succinctly, we believe in the power of a community.
The Foundation is named for my youngest brother, Willy Shuman, who we lost in a car crash in just a few days before he was set to depart for the United States Air Force Academy and join its tennis team. Even at a relatively young age, Willy took time—of which he had precious little—to mentor younger players on and off the court. In doing so, he passed on his easy smile, his sportmanship, and his boundless energy to the next generation. After he passed, two of the younger players he mentored planted the seed that became our annual round robin fundraiser. Through the Foundation and that round robin, his impact is still felt no only in the tennis community, but also beyond as the Foundation has grown. This is no testament to us; it is a testament to him.
Sadly, my eldest brother, Wilson Shuman, passed away last year. For him, community seemed to be wherever he happened to be. More than anyone I have ever know, Wilson loved to be with people. In turn, people loved to be with Wilson. He had more best friends than anyone I have ever known. After Willy’s passing, he began coaching our local high school lacrosse team. He fretted, he worried, and he paid attention not only to the athletic development of his players, but also to their personal growth. Wilson gave me a shirt years ago that has the word “team” in block letters above the word “me.” The message is simple: the team comes before me. I still wear it. He believed it. I do to.
All of you are part of a unique community. The beauty of a team of men and women, or even just one person, sweeping a shell across the water is simply majestic. It is alchemy of this first order to combine so much power with so much technique and to do so in unison. From the coxswain to the stroke, each person must work in harmony. Each shell is a community unto itself. And, of course, none of this would be possible without the countless volunteers who have made the Regatta a premier event. In short, the Regatta is a microcosm of every ideal the Foundation cherishes.
As always, the Foundation wishes the competitors the best of luck, good weather and smooth water. To the organizers, sponsors, and volunteers, the Foundation commends you for your service year in and year out. We know first hand that events like this cannot happen without you. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not say to the St. Andrew’s alumni competitors: Go Saints!
