ls Fireside Chat from SCBC President Al Jones

We are enjoying some very unseasonable riding weather in December 2015. I hope many of you have

taken advantage of these conditions to extend your riding season.

This is my last Fireside Chat column as president, and I want to thank everyone for their support. The

people who have comprised the SCBC board are unbelievably dedicated and great to work with. They also

    make some great covered dishes.

I would like to take a minute to crow about our accomplishments during the last two years. The SCBC facebook page is being used to update members on important events and ride issues. A sec-

tion for policies and guidelines has been added in the files section of FB and on our web site. Minutes of all

meetings are organized on the web site to make reading and research easier.

Official tour planning meetings were held for the first time to allow members to provide input on and

provide planning for SCBC cycling tours. Similarly, Ride Leader workshops were conducted to provide train-

ing and set guidelines for ride leaders. New policy guidelines have resulted from these meetings.

The Publicity Chairman has worked to get our Share The Road message out to the various media outlets and to inform the

community that the SCBC is an important voice in cycling issues in NE Ohio. The message that SCBC is acting for bicycle safety in

    our community has been heard.

The new Historian has begun the daunting task of organizing the nearly 50 year history of this club. He has provided many

interesting articles and prompted others to share their earlier experiences with the club through written articles.

The newsletter and web sites continue to be positive reflections on the professionalism and dedication that hallmarks this

organization. The Ohio State Senior Olympics cycling event was one of the best organized in the history of the event according to long

time participants. We achieved a level of professionalism several steps above those previously set.

Our 400+ ride maps are unsurpassed in every category, and our ride schedule is unequalled by anyclub of anysize.

Cycling advocacy message was personally delivered to our representatives in Columbus by a SCBC delegation.

Our New Year's Day, Poker Run, July 4, and Oktoberfest parties/potlucks are great fun. Membership meetings provide rele-

vant cycling information and provide monthly opportunity to meet old and make new friends.

The club provided many opportunities to see the USA on bicycle. Cycling tours of Venice, Fl., Nashville, MI UP, and Niagara

Falls were conducted during 2015 alone. Community cycling support was provided by gifts and member participation in numerous

events. Other community organizations frequently request our support for their cycling events.

Safe cycling practices have been emphasized in meetings, online and wherever practicable. Bright, reflective clothing and

daylight lights have been emphasized for all rides.

I would like to emphasize that the job is not finished. No organization can rest on its past accomplishments. You must con-

tinue to work to ensure a safe cycling environment. Participation, participation and participation is the solution. Thank you foryour participation during the past two years.

Annual New Years Day Ride and Covered Dish Dinner

A ride to celebrate and kick off 2016, the year of the monkey, will start at Dogwood Park, at 241 7 th

Street NE, North Canton on January 1st

. 2016. The 2:00 pm ride will start from the Dogwood Parkparking lot with a covered dish dinner to follow. A 22 mile cue has been put together for the first ride

of 2016. Its a route using roads we have all been on. Cutoffs are available. Hopefully, the beautiful

December riding weather will continue for this event. If the weather does not cooperate there will be

a neighborhood hike. A covered dish dinner will follow the ride. The club will be providing pork, sau-

sage, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Bring a covered dish and stay for food, drink and fellowship

after the ride. Spouses and significant others are encouraged to come, even if they do not ride.

Leading Rides & Lights on for Safety

Why should I lead SCBC rides you may be asking? Simply put, without willing ride leaders the monthly

ride schedule would be much less diverse and robust. Questions you may have are what are the qualifications,

how do I get started leading rides, and how does leading rides benefit me? Qualifications to be a ride leader

are spelled out on the SCBC web site in the About Us section. Rides can be selected from the SCBC ride

map library also located on the SCBC web site. Chances are you may have ridden a number of the rides listed

there and already have a few favorites. Picking a starting location again may be dictated by a personal preference. Most of our

current ride leaders select a location near to their residence for convenience or one where their favorite rides already originate.

Finally, you may wonder how do I get a ride(s) on the monthly schedule? This can be accomplished by contacting Ride Captain

Bill Mishler at [email protected] sure to tell him you are a new ride leader and he will send you the form for ride

entries. I encourage everyone to support any new ride leader who may be stepping forward to lead their first ride(s). As with all

things in life, nothing remains static. There will always be turnover among our ride leaders, due to aging, health, moving out of

the area, or any number of other reasons. If we allow our bank of ride leaders to be depleted we may face a future with far less

    choices for our daily rides.

We are now into the season of late sunrises, early sunsets, and bleak overcast days. Its essential to be seen during this

time of year. One of more blinking taillights, flashing headlights, and bright or reflective clothing are strongly recommended on

you and your bicycle. Recently I was traveling south on Mayfair Road after dark. Suddenly I saw a rider ahead on the road. He had

numerous reflective devices on himself and his bike alerting me of his presence and I was able to move over and safely pass him.

However, he would have been visible from a much greater distance if he had had flashing taillights as well. Additionally, motorists

behind me would have had a much earlier warning of a cyclist ahead with taillights. The 2

    nd

    or 3

    rd

car on the road approachingfrom the rear pose a greater threat to cyclists as their view of the road ahead is somewhat obscured. An early warning in this case

could be lifesaving. In the overall realm of road cycling, there is no such thing as overkill when lighting up or employing proper

clothing and reflective devices for safety.

SCBC 10th Anniversary Venice FloridaFlorida Hotel Update

Sometimes good things do come to those who wait. I was surprised to hear from one of

our members that the Island Sun recently quoted the old price of $75 + tax for his reserva-

tion. I called and received the same information. Therefore, I am cautiously optimistic

that reservations can be made at this rate for the 2016 tour. 941-484-9559

    Annual Banquet

    January 9, 2016

    SCBC Rocks The 80s

The Stark County Bicycle Club has enjoyed many themes for the Annual Banquetover the years. Just in the last decade we have celebrated our 40thand 45th

Birthdays. We have cycled across the USA, in Europe, and around the world.

SCBC has even ridden in Paradise. Other themes were Cycling- How Sweet It

Is, SCBC Goes to the Movies and Cycling-A Sign of the Times.

This past year several of our longtime members turned the very respectable age

of 80. Upon a close look at our membership list, it was discovered that we had

16 current or recent former members who were 80 years old or better. This it

seems is cause to celebrate. Cycling and an active older lifestyle-exercise keeps

you young-use it or lose it all come to mind. So the theme for the 2016 Banquet

    is SCBC ROCKS THE 80S

The Banquet will honor these 16 members: AJ Scarp, Bill Johnson, Bob Forney,

Bruce Miller, Bud Scott, Dave Cassel, Ed Grace, Ellen Payne-Thompson, Erika

Stephan, Jim Kennedy, Larry Johnson, Leurene Hildenbrand, Mal Johnson, PaulBlohm, Polly Caley and Ruth Guthrie. Hopefully not too many will be in sunny

Florida and will be able to attend their banquet!

The Decade of the 1980s will be celebrated also. It should have been a great

time of life for all our 80 year olds! So if you have not sent in your reservation,

do it because this is guaranteed to be a good time. See the Reservation Form on

the website or in this Spokin Word. Saturday January 9that Tozzis on 12th,

    5:45 PM.

    Greetings SCBC members

Here is a little bio about me. I have lived most of my life in Stark County, graduating from Jackson in 1959. I have been

married to the greatest gal in the world for 47 years and I do not say that lightly. We have three wonderful, successful children.

We have eight extremely intelligent grandchildren. Three live in Stark County, two in the Columbus area, and three in San Diego.

I have a lot of interests besides biking which is probably why I do not bike more. I enjoy golfing, kayaking, growing anything, can-

ning and freezing produce, baking, traveling, woodworking, etc. Well, you get the picture.

Kenny Stenger and I started riding about fifteen years ago. We rode mostly on the trails and got very excited if we could

average 10 mph. After a couple years on our own, we joined the SCBC. I rode with a lot of great people over the years. I can

truly say I have not met any club member I did not like. Well, two bicycles later and riding two and three times a week, I was

getting pretty fast (by my standards). I did five rides in a row averaging over 16 mph. My last ride before my accident I averaged

16.8 mph. My journal entry said, I'm starting to scare myself. Little did I know how prophetic that was. The next ride was out

of Clinton. We had less than a mile to go. I was blazing away at the head of the pack when I hit something in the road. I went

a__ over tin cup, hitting the pavement, breaking my hip and leg....oh the pain. It was Columbus Day. I disliked him even before

the accident. He would have been a great

member of ISIS, but that's another story. I will

be eternally grateful to Karen Erdos who

stayed with me and rode in the ambulance

with me to the hospital. She is an angel. Al-

so, many thanks to the person who rescued my

bike, which unlike me suffered no injuries. I

completely recovered and have had the pins

and rods taken out. They are now a planthanger on my deck. I have not been able to

get back to the 16 mph's. It might have some-

thing to do with hitting the 70s.

Oh wow! I just averaged 12 mph on that

16 mile ride; Yee Haw! Like the country song

says, I used to be hell on wheels when I was a

    younger man.

Starting LocationsChanges: All changes effective Jan 1, 2016.

The Fairless High School starting location has been eliminated. The three Fairless maps have been

    deleted.

The Oakwood Middle School starting location has been eliminated. The 10 rides from Oakwood will

    likely be deleted.

The Nimishillen Schoolstarting location and all of the Nimishillen maps been moved to Molly StarkPark.

The Tuscarawas County Human Servicesstarting location has changed names. It is now Tuscarawas

County Job and Family. Same location. Both maps retained.

How to Find a Starting Location:

At the top of the online ride schedule is a link which takes you to an area map showing all starting locations. If you click

on the location name a google map showing the location in detail will appear. Also, there is a tab on the left in the

opening window of bikescbc.com which leads to a list of starting locations and live links bringing up google maps show-

ing where the locations are. At the top of this starting location list is another live link which brings up the aforemen-

tioned area map of starting locations, or if you are reading this online you can use this link.

    Florida:

Some Florida Maps are being updated. Florida maps can be downloaded January 1.

Crystal Springs Bridge:Several months ago concrete barriers were placed at the entrances to the old silver bridge which crosses

the Tuscarawas River at High Mill and Erie between Massillon and Canal Fulton. The barriers were difficult for cyclists to

negotiate, particularly cyclists on tandems and long base recumbents, and they impacted several of our rides. Thanks to

    D. Ruwadi of the Jackson Township Parks Dept the barriers have been moved back 16 inches at our request. They are

now much more convenient for cyclists and also conform to American Disability Act standards. This historical, 102 year

old, riveted pony truss bridge was erected in 1914 to replace a bridge destroyed in the flood of 1913. The original wood-

en floor was replaced with a metal grid in the 1940s. The bridge was closed to traffic and vacated by the Stark County

Commissioners in 1995, saved by the Jackson Township Historical Society, and dedicated as Crystal Springs Bridge Park

by the Jackson Township Park Department in 1996.

Map Changes:Starting Locations Map: Updated to conform with recent Starting Location changes. The link for this map is located on

the bikescbc.com website on the Starting Locations page just above the list of starting locations and above the online

    Ride Schedule.

Map 208. Knox School Loop. Starting location moved from Nimishillen School to Molly Sark Park. New Map, elevation,

history, copyright and index boxes added. There is a major route change and a total mileage change from 29 to 31.

Thanks to Don Royer for suggesting the route change.

Map 418. Tour de Ridges - Tour of Tusc. Co. Stage 2. The starting location for this map has changed names from

Tuscarawas County Human Services to Tuscarawas County Job and Family. This 74 mile map created by Scott Thor in

2003, with 7300 ft of gain (as recorded by Scott) and a gain per mile of 99 feet may be our hilliest ride.

Map 419. Top of Tusc. County- Tour of Tusc. Co. Stage 3. The starting location for this 73 mile map has changed

names from Tuscarawas County Human Services to Tuscarawas County Job and Family. This ride, also originated by

Scott Thorr, has a total gain of 6784 (Scotts info) and a gain per mile of 92.7 making it another Boot Camp special!

    Florida Map Changes:

Map 903.Myakka River State Park.Starting at Myakka River State Park, FL. The long route has been changed to in-

clude a rest stop at Manatee Lake and two rest stops on Waterbury Rd. I have made a cue correction and added RWGPS.

Mileage changed from 64 68. Thanks to Dave Cardarella for the rest stop additions and route change suggestion and to

Bill Colvin for mentioning the cue mistake.

Map 918. Venice to Myakka. Starting at Potter Park (47 mile route) and the Island Sun (74 mile route). Route change.

Honore replaces a section of Cattlemans. Total miles remain the same. Thanks to Don Royer and Dave Cardarella for

    suggesting this change.

Map 918. Venice to Myakka. 74 mile route starting at the Island Sun. The L turn onto Albee Rd is replaced by a R turn

onto Albee and a U-Turn. Change suggested by Don Royer, the map originator.

Map 901. First Start.Starting at the Island Sun Inn, Venice FL. A major route change at the beginning of the ride. VWP/

Legacy Trail replaced US-41/Birdbay. RWGPS replaced MMR. Mileage increased from 25/39 to 27/41.

Map 923. Longboat Key. The 16 mile route starts at Coquina Beach on Anna Maria Island. The 38 mile route starts at

    ages have not changed.

Map 917. Siesta Key. Starting at the Island Sun Inn, Venice, FL. There is a major route change on this ride. It now ac-

cesses the Legacy Trail at the Circus Bridge at the beginning of the ride and no longer makes a loop onto Casey Key

which is ridden on many other rides. Changes suggested by Al Jones and Dave Cardarella (map originator). The map is

now in the RideWithGPS generated format which we have started to use for Club Tours. The total mileage has changed

    from 50 to 48.

    New Maps:

Map 935. New Years Day 2016.Starting from Dogwood Park. This is a 17/22 mile ride which as the ride name suggests

Club History ProjectSCBC Tours and Trips

Over the past 47 years many SCBC trips have been made to interesting areas both near and far. Many tours involved multipleday cycle touring from one destination to another. Some involved camping and some involved hostels and hotels. Thanks to ElaineSnively we can see the variety and extent of these trips via a listing she has compiled of SCBC trips from the 1970s up to the pre-sent.

The list includes such varied destinations as Coshocton, Kellys Island, North Bend State Park WV, Mohican State Park, SaltFork State Park, Crater Lake OR, Lexington KY, Finger Lakes NY, St.Augustine to Clearwater FL and the southern Alleghenies.

Elaine has included references to articles in the Spokin Word with dates and page numbers plus other information such as mapnumbers, leaders and sag drivers.

We invite you to look at the full list on the club web site where Paul Schroedl has placed it under the About Us tab. You willthen be able to find and read the Spokin Word articles about the trips that most interest you. Elaine and others including KarlaBedard, Dave Cardarella, Karen Erdos, Al Jones, Debbie Mohler, Sara Schroedl, Linda Shaheen and Tom Sinacore have also postedphotos from these trips that can be seen under the sites Photos tab. Thanks to Dave Cardarella we currently have the Spokin Word issues online back to 2004. A future project will be to scan and add previous years. Another potential future history projectthat members could participate in would be to make an index to the Spokin Word and /or make lists of articles by category suchthe In memory of articles. Paul is also adding past history articles under the About Us tab.

Any additional trip photos and history information can be sent to me and/or Elaine at [email protected] and [email protected].

Commuter MilesCommuting miles are defined as any miles on the bike during

which you substitute a bicycle for a motor vehicle. You can in-

clude trips to work, school, appointments, errands and riding toa club ride (SCBC scheduled ride miles should not be included in

    your commuter miles).

Reporting will be on the Honor System. Send your miles via
