When Jay Jaboneta spoke at a bloggers summit in Zamboanga City in southernPhilippines last October, he encouraged participants to use social media to foster nationbuilding and improve peoples lives. Little did the Manila-based communicationsmanager know that within weeks he would be putting his words into action.

While in Zamboanga City, Jaboneta heard about a nearby village where youngchildren had to swim 2 kilometres and walk another 5 kilometres to get to school.During his flight home, he thought about how he could help. I had so much admirationfor these children, he says. I felt they deserved to be rewarded and help for all their

    efforts.

Back in Manila he discovered that the children came from the village of LayagLayag, a cluster of more than 200 Muslims families living in shanties built on stiltsover the sea. The villagers survived on seaweed farming and fishing but could notafford a boat to ferry their children to school.

In November, Jaboneta posted a story about the childrens plight on his Facebookpage. He thought that was enough, but his friend Josiah Go encouraged him to do more. With Gos help, Jaboneta created Zamboanga Funds for Little Kids, which soughtdonation through his Facebook page to build a boat for the Layag Layag children.

It was not a formal organisation but there was an enthusiastic show of support, andwe managed to raise $1600 in a week.

Looking for help on the ground in Zamboanga City, Jaboneta contacted Anton Lim,a local liaison officer with the Tzu Chi Foundation, a Buddhist humanitarianorganisation. Lim, who admits he had never heard about the plight of the children ofLayag Layag, travelled to the village. I saw first-hand how the children struggled toswim across the murky water, holding their bags on their heads with one hand whilethey paddled with the other, he recalls. I was alarmed that they received no assistanceto make their situation safer. Lim also spoke with Tito Gadon of Zamboanga Citys

Department of Natural Resources, who agreed to donate logs confiscated from illegallogging activities.

Next, Abraham Mawadi, a boat maker living in Layag Layag, was contracted tobuild the boat. I have seven children and each of them had to swim to school because Idont have money to buy wood to build a bigger boat, says Mawadi. I was excitedwhen I learned this boat was for the children. I volunteered to take care of it and be itsofficial driver.

On March 27, Jaboneta, Lim and a group of 15 volunteers formally turned the boat

over to Layag Layag community. Christened Bagong Pagasa (New Hope), it beganferrying children, 20 at a time, on June 6, the first day of the new school year. Whilethe children are in school, the boat is used to transports goods and produce to the

market. The benefits of the new boat were felt immediately. There was a suddenincrease in the number of students this year, especially in the preschool.says NuljamriJayari, principal of Talon Talon Public Elementary School, which the children of LayagLayag attend.

And children are showing a new sense of confidence. They used to come to schoolwith their heads bowed and looking tired, says Clarissa Cruz, a sixth grade teacher atthe Talon Talon school. They were ashamed because they were poorer than the otherstudents. They were dressed in wrinkled and often damp clothes.

Now they come to school dry and fresh looking. The children have a new eagerness

to learn and a visible sense of pride. As word spread through Facebook and the media, additional help poured in for the

people of Layag Layag. The Tzu Chi Foundation used donations to give the villageclothes, school supplies and boat repair kits.

I envisioned the boat would improve the lives of the children but I didnt imaginehow it would open a whole new world of opportunities for the entire community soquickly, admits Jaboneta, who had contracted Abraham Mawadi to build a secondboat for community.

He was still in his mummys womb when his dad died. Yet, TV host, radiopresenter, actor and entrepreneur Farish Aziz talked about his late father, who died atthe very young age of 29, as if he had really known him.

During the sad incident, his dad and a few other relatives were by the river. They

were taking his herd of horses for a bath. One of the horses kicked his uncle, who fellinto the river. He didnt know how to swim and was struggling to stay afloat. Seeingthat, his dad dived in and saved him. As fate would have it, it was his father whodrowned. It happened towards the end of August and that is why the annual Merdekacelebrations always bring back sad memories for the family.

The 27-year-old Kota Kinabalu-born Farish, whose real name is Mohd Farish AzizSulaiman and his only other sibling, an elder brother, thus grew up without thepresence of a father figure.

Growing up without a father was tough emotionally. When you look at your

friends, whose fathers would come to pick them up from school, attend sporting events,parent-teacher association meetings, you tend to feel lonely.

I had my uncles and aunties who are always around when we needed them but itwas not the same. Still, Im thankful for their love and support all those years, said thisself-proclaimed shy guy.

According to his grandmother, Farish is a spitting image of his late father. Exceptthat he was six footer and Im not he laughed. But dont underestimate him just yet.Farish represented Sabah football for several years. He was a member of the state teamfrom the age of 14 until he turned 23. He played for the President Cup, the Milo Cup

and a host of other championships. One of the many highlights was when Sabah madeit to the Under 19 category.

After turning 23, I decided that I had to be realistic about my future in football so Idecided to pursue a different career path, said Farish who was the pin-up footballerposter boy during his school days as footballer.

Farish was accepted into Unitar Kota Kinabalu where he completed a degree course

in business in administration majoring in human resource management. During his finalyear, Unitar Kuala Lumpur gave him a call asking him to finish his last semester inKuala Lumpur where he was asked to represent Unitar Kuala Lumpur in football forInter-University League. He was also asked to be its model for the universitys printadvertisements. One thing led to another. Farish met friends who suggested that he go

to a casting agency which he did.

Then one day, Farish found himself at the right place at right time. Maxis wasshooting an advertisement for the companys World Cup adventure campaign in 2006.They were short of two talents when Farish was sported. They asked if he could dribblea football. After showing off some skills, he got the job.

He went on to do several more print advertisement commercials for KFC andShurah Cosmetics. His big break came when he was asked to host Astros DurianRuntuh, a two minutes TV quiz that offered cash prizes for viewers. It proved to be awindfall for him.

I attended an open audition, which was held at Bukit Jalil, during World YouthDay in 2006. I didnt get the job right away but was told to come for training first. Itlasted for two weeks. The period clashed with my final semester exams. It was a bitcrazy, he recalled.

To date, Farish has not only hosted several TV programmes (Durian Runtuh, Bola,Ronda 360 a travel show), he has also acted in several TV dramas (Gaia, PontianakRemaja, Takbir Suci 3, Kami The Series) and works as a radio deejay with KotaKinabalu Suria FM daily from 6am to 10am, Monday to Friday. Twice a month, hetravels to Kuala Lumpur to shoot TV9s Chopp, a programme similar to 8TVsQuickie. It comes on air daily at 6.58pm and 10.28pm. He has also come out with hisown line of clothing called Kmeja based in Bangsar. Not bad for a shy guy!

meningococcal disease and finally survived the ordeal. Read the passage carefully and answer thequestions that follow.

Danilo and Mary Giribaldi were still immersed in the joy of welcoming theirthird baby when Bernadette, their second child, suddenly complained of feeling sick. The little girl with soft brown eyes and a cheeky smile was a couple of months shy ofher third birthday and had just spent a busy day with her grandparents. When Danilo, acivil engineer, arrived to take her home, she was burning up. He noticed a strange newpatch like a bruise on her temple. When he asked her whether she had banged on herhead, she just nodded. But it was a sign of something far more serious than a backyard

    scrape.

While Mary was busy with their other two children, Danilo put Bernadette tobed. Several times throughout the night, he checked on his restless toddler. He gave herparacetamol, but her temperature still raged. At 5am, Danilo checked her again and thistime noticed that Bernadette had developed thousands of tiny red and purple dots acrossher trunk. He called out to Mary. Even blurry, she recognized the rash immediately:shed seen the distinctive markings of meningococcal disease on a local TV show yearsbefore. So while Mary stayed behind to watch the other two children, Danilo bundledBernadette in the car and set off for the nearby childrens hospital.

It was barely 6am when Danilo rushed his little girl into emergency. In minutes,a medical team had gathered around Bernadette to figure out what to do first.Intravenous lines were set up in each arm to infuse antibiotics. But as they watched, blotches spread all over her body, tears of blood started leaking from her eyes. By10am, after Bernadette had been transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU), her bloodpressure had dropped to dangerous levels, and she was placed into an induced coma toallow her body to concentrate every last drop of energy on survival.

Bernadettes blood pressure didnt rally, and despite a raft of drugs for boostingheart rate and restricting blood vessels, her heart was in danger of stopping. Her kidneyshad failed and she needed to be connected to a dialysis machine to filter her blood ofwastes. Amid these dangers, her little body had started to swell. Twice during the day,the team had cut into her limbs to ease the swelling and attempt to save her arms and

legs. By 7pm, Bernadette was in septic shock, so she was moved into theatre. Her chestwas opened up and her heart moved to one side to make room for tubes connected to anartificial pump that would artificially circulate and oxygenate her blood. WhenBernadette was wheeled back to ICU, where her still stunned parents were waiting, shewas surrounded by machines, all needed to keep her alive.

That night, Bernadettes kidneys failed. She was connected to a dialysis to filterher blood of wastes, extra salt and water. Her future looked bleak, but with her parentsby her side, the little girl fought on. The ICU team began days of around-the-clockmonitoring. They reopened Bernadettes chest to clean blood leakage from tubingconnected to the artificial pump and kept a supply of fresh blood for transfusion. Two

weeks in, with her condition stable, doctors decided the dangers of taking her off theartificial pump were probably lower that the risks of infection if she stayed connected toit. Still, she fought.

At the three-week mark, the results of insufficient blood supply to the extremitieswere obvious. Gangrene had crept up Bernadettes foot and ankle. When the doctorcouldnt feel a pulse below her knees, Plastic surgeon, Dr. Peter Haywood explained toDanilo and Mary that they were at a critical point: to keep the limbs would be lifethreatening, as infection from the dead tissue would inevitable spread. There was nochoice but to amputate. Doctors removed both legs below the knee, most of the fingerson the left hand, and parts of the fingers on the right.

A week later, Bernadette began to rouse. After five weeks in intensive care,Bernadette was stable enough to be transferred to the ward. Finally, in mid-June, afterturning three in hospital, she was released. For months, as she gathered more strengthand her limbs healed sufficiently, she could be fitted with her first artificial legs. As herbaby brother Isaac learned to crawl, Bernadette learnt to walk all over again. At first, allshe could do was stand. Then, shed take one or two steps. After that, she could walkwith a frame. It was the greatest feeling for Danilo and Mary when they finally saw herafter a few months walk with her legs all by herself.

If someone were to ask me to name Gods best gift to man, I would readily say itthat of speech. I arrived at this conclusion rather unexpectedly, not after months ofdogged research but after a seven-day period of utter silence. Consumption of the wrongfood, overwork and too many hours staring at the computer to meet deadlines allcontributed to the no-voice malady. The first to notice my condition were those closestto me. I could no longer bother to nag them into submission. In the event that I wanted tovoice my displeasure over something that was done not quite the way it should havebeen, they would innocently wave their hands and say, We cannot hear you!

Next, and with great agony, I was made to understand the meaning of frustration.I couldnt speak so I couldnt express what I meant and this led to a number of

exasperating situations. The char koay teow man thought I was dumb as in stupidwhen I could not answer his questions. The lychee seller cheated me by mixing badlychees with the good ones as I couldnt argue. My lovesick dog ran out of the gatebecause I couldnt call out to it.

My voice is crucial to my job and desperate situations call for desperatemeasures. Al though, not one for traditional medicine, I had no choice but to run to theChinese herbalist for his reputed cure for hoarse throats after everything else had failed. Isaw him write a long list of ingredients. Not understanding a word he wrote, I imaginedmy condition must be terribly serious to be prescribed with the huge amount of dried

leaves, bark, cicadas, fuzzy bees and other creepy crawlies. Seeing the horror on myface, the herbalist triumphantly wrapped the foul stuff in brown paper. He warned methat I would stand to lose my voice altogether if I failed to take all that he hadprescribed.

Hurrying home, I immediately inspected the brown packages. If I had heardcorrectly, the herbalist told me to add four bowls of water to what he had given me andto boil it till one bowl of fluid was left. I searched the kitchen cabinet and was faced witha new problem. Which type of bowl did he mean? There were Chinese porcelain bowlswith pictures of ruddy-cheeked children playing ping-pong, Japanese rice bowls fornights when we decided to go Japanese, plastic bowls for picnics and lastly, good, old,

    sturdy melamine bowls.

All the bowls on the shelf seemed to scream, Choose me, choose me. Finally, Ithought that since he was a Chinese herbalist, he probably must have meant a Chineseporcelain bowl. I boiled the foul-smelling concoction day and night. The whole housestank. The children, however, had a wonderful time inspecting the creepy crawlies. Theylooked really fascinating, all dried up with their innards removed, their feet curled uplike curly fries. With religious fervour, I drank the potion at the recommended hours.Such was my unquestioning obedience that the last strands of rationalism and scientificlogic were dispelled.

With a heavy heart, I awaited the return of my voice. The first thing I did when Iwoke up each day was to believe that I could say hello to myself out loud again. SadlyI could only manage a croak. Believe me, I felt like a toad! Then as if by an assimilationof images, the toad reminded me of the anguish I had felt sometime back. I was awarethen that I lacked grace and tolerance and had a temper that was, at most times, short.

My last birthday wish was to appreciate others more and my wish was granted inmy days of silence. My condition made me more appreciative of others. I also becamemore graceful. How I appreciated the one who awoke in the night to give me warmwater to ease my congested lungs. How I appreciate the little hands that thumped myback to help clear my airway of phlegm.

Most of all, I learnt the meaning of grace: the grace not to reply in anger, thegrace not to criticize when expectations are not met, the grace to know that without avoice, I am as imperfect as anyone else.

    hummingbird.

Based on analysis of past years questions, process and procedure is the most popular type of

questions forSection C (Reading and Comprehension).

    TIPS FOR READING AND COMPREHENSION

The questions are usually set in sequence order, usually from the easiest to the most

challenging questions. For the easy questions, candidates could easily locate the answers in

the text by matching the key words in the questions and the text.

To make the questions even easier, the numbers of paragraphs where the answers could be

found were also given as to guide candidates where to get the answers.

There would usually be five main questions given and one or two other sub questions for

    each main question.

    For questions 26 29 :

The beginning of the questions usually would be very user-friendly as they just require

the candidates to locate the answers from the passage. The answers would be very direct

and it would be easier for them to locate the answer. The famous wh-question which is

always used is what. Sometimes, which, when and who are also used but very

seldom. This type of question usually only tests the candidates understanding and

    knowledge of the text.

As the questions progress, they would be more difficult and wh-questions like why and

how are used as they demand the candidates to think more critically whereby they have

to give their answers logically, so that those answers can be accepted.

A very famous question would also be on the vocabulary question which is always

meant to be difficult but candidates would have guessed for the meaning of the wordsbased on the number of low frequency word in the paragraph.

Some of the questions asked also require the candidates to guess the answers based on the

key words given, whereby the answers are usually placed after the key words.

However, candidates need to guess intelligently.

    19/21

Some questions would ask for the reference words like he, they or it and candidates

need to guess these pronouns refer to what or whom. The answer for this type of question

usually is given before the pronoun mentioned.

Sometimes there would be too much information given that it would lead to someinaccurate answers from weaker students who failed to comprehend the question.

Thus, students really have to read and comprehend the passage as well as identify the key

words in order to be able to get the correct answers.

The answers usually can be taken from the text but candidates must select the answers

(in phrases or sentences) intelligently. Candidates are advised not to paraphrase their

answers for being feared of changing the meaning of words. If meaning has changed

after the candidates try to paraphrase, they will be penalized, means that no marks will be

awarded. Nevertheless, it is permissible if students still want to paraphrase their answers

but be careful not to change the meaning.

When answering the questions by taking a phrases or a sentence from the passage,

students cannot copy the whole sentence/s, including copying the irrelevant part (that

is not the answer) or else marks will not be awarded. Instead, students must answer and

select the permissible phrase and sentence only.

When answering the question too, students are not supposed to commit error like overlifting the pronouns I or my. By over lifting the pronouns I or my, the answer is

considered wrong even if the students managed to copy the correct part of the answer.

Students would not be awarded any marks for the over lifting of the pronoun I or

    my.

Make sure students are aware of the difference between word, phrase and sentence as it

is vital in answering some of the comprehension questions.

If the question asked for evidence, students can quote any phrase or sentence from the

text, and students cannot paraphrase the answers. If the question asked for a piece of

evidence, then just give one phrase or one short sentence, but if two pieces of evidence,

    then give two phrases.

    20/21

    For question 30 :

The last question usually elicits personal response from the candidates. This type of

question is good in the sense that it makes candidates think logically and rationally before

    coming up with the answers.

Students need to be careful as there are two types of this question. The first type usually

asks for use of own words, in which students usually give their own opinion or

personal responsebased on the understanding of the passage (but do not take ideas or

examples in the text). However, another type of question is when the question asked

students to answer based on the text but then students cannot copy the answer

directly, instead they are required to paraphrase the answers in the text using own

words. If students take the answers completely from the text without any paraphrasing,

    no marks will be awarded.

    SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDENTS

    1. Read the text and questions at least twice.

    2. Learn to look forclues and use contextual clues.
