Overview
Splicing can be defined as thejoining of two conductors or fibers
together to restore the conductor continuity between two points.
Once a splicing is done the spliced point needs to have mechanical
protection which is provided by Protection Sleeves, namely Smouv.
Once all of the conductors have been spliced they will are inserted into
the Splice EnclosureNamely Jointing Kitthat protects the splicing
point from environmental hazards, mechanical stress, unstabilized
bending radii.

Splicing Methods
Fusion Splicing
Fusion splicing is the recommended methodof fusing two fibers together.
In a fusion-splice, the two fibers are "welded" together with an electric arc.
Because this method of splicing is much more accurate there may be no loss acrossthe splice. Fusion splicing is the only type of splicing recommended for single-modefiber.
Mechanical Splicing
A typical mechanical splice uses a gripping mechanismto prevent fiber separation, ameans for fiber alignment, and includes index matching gelto reduce signal loss.
As of present times, fusion splice is much practicabledue to
Low splice-loss High accuracy
High durability
Increasing number of fiber cores in a single fiber
Less tolerable downtime on high capacity network demand.

Principle of Fusion Splicing
The objective of fusion splicing is to join optical fiber with low splice
loss, low reflection, high mechanical strength and long-term stability

Basic Requirements for a High-quality Fusion Splice
Clean working area and tools (stripper, cleaver, fusion splicer)
Good fiber quality or suitable fusion splicer type
Good fiber preparation
Strip coating to expose cladding (bare fiber)
Clean stripped fiber end
Cleave fiber end to required length
Good alignment
Correct placement of fiber ends in fusion splicer
Precise alignment by fusion splicer
Suitable fusion parameters
Stabile fusion arc; compensation of environmental influences etc.
Good splice protection

Influence on Fusion Process: Self-Centering Effect
Caused by the tendency of the fiber
to form a homogeneous joint as aresult of the surface tension of the
molten glass
Leads to compensation / decrease of
fiber offsets during fusion
For this reason fusion splicers with
fixed v-grooves can achieve average
splice losses of less than 0.05 dB if
core eccentricity is low (e.g. ccc 0.03 dB),
Go for fusing again by selecting up/down button

Step-3
Then Lift up the RIGHT SIDEFlaps
In the same way done for left side.
Take the spliced fiber out of the
Groove by softly holding the fiber
at both ends.
Step-2
Then Lift the CENTRAL FLAPup keeping
The fiber at left side still held gently
Practice Softness, Patience & care
While lifting up the CENTRAL FLAP
Step-1
Gently lift up the LEFT SIDEClamping
Flap and then the LID flap.
While lifting up the flaps, make sure
That the fiber on the LEFT side is
softly & gently held for better

Mechanical Protection of Splice Point
The Spliced point can be broken easily by any radial force and therefore must be protected.
For field splicing there are two common methods:
Heat-shrinking protector:
There is a heat-shrinking oven installed at the rear part of the splicer.
Open the oven transparent flap and place the splice inside. Make sure the fiber is lying straight,
the sleeve is in the center and covers both coating ends. A LED will light up signals that the oven is heating up. When the LED goes off, visually check
that the sleeve has been shrunk down evenly and remove the splice from the oven.
Crimping:
In case of heat-shrinking protection, If crimping protection is applied, place the v-shapedaluminum clip with the opening
showing upwards into the crimping tool which is installed at the rear of the splicing machine.
Place the fiber loop with the exposed cladding section straight and evenly inside the clip and
apply the crimping lever to close the protector. Remove the fiber loop then.
