Caribou (Selcwéycen) Recovery in Secwepemcúlecw
Through funding received from the Federal
Government, Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the
Land) 2007 LLP on behalf of Splatsin is working
towards advancing caribou recovery in
Secwepemcúlecw.
Historically, mountain caribou have occurred
throughout Splatsin territory and have been an
abundant and culturally significant food source.
Today, the remaining groups or subpopulations are declining rapidly and will likely disappear
soon if preventative actions do not take place. Of the subpopulations within the territory, it is
likely that less than 230 caribou remain.
The table below shows the past and present population estimate for caribou in Splatsin
territory with the location of subpopulations (coloured polygons) shown in relation to
Splatsin territory (red-outline) shown in the figure below.

What is causing the decline?
Caribou are facing many changes across their landscape, each of which is contributing to
caribou decline. Activities such as industrial forest harvesting, hydroelectric developments,
expansive winter and summer recreation, and mining all have had and continue to impact
caribou by reducing or changing the condition of their habitat.
Other impacts are less direct such as recovering forestry cut-blocks that become favourable
habitat for other species such as moose and deer. As these species become more abundant, they
attract and support an increased number of predators such as cougar, wolf and bears which
results in an increased predation on caribou.
Current Recovery Actions
To protect these animals, a combination of activities, strategies, and initiatives are needed in
order to be effective. Splatsin is currently engaged in caribou recovery and has been involved in
several recovery initiatives including:
• the Revelstoke Caribou Rearing in the Wild
project (a 5-year project aimed at rearing
caribou calves born in a penned enclosure to
protect them from predators until they are
better able to escape predation).
• Participation in caribou surveys and
investigating causes of mortality for radio-
collared caribou.
• Monitoring of other prey species (deer, moose).
• Habitat restoration work along deactivated forestry service roads (before on the left and
after on the right, pictured next page).

As part of caribou recovery planning, Yucwmenlúcwu is developing a 5-year strategic
caribou recovery plan and we are looking to the community to be part of the process.
Your opinions and input are valued, and we would appreciate you taking the time to
provide feedback. Below we have supplied several questions for your consideration and
feedback:
1. Do you have any experiences or historical knowledge of caribou? If so, when and
where?
2. What are some traditional uses of caribou?
3. What are some things you like or don’t like that are currently being done for caribou
recovery?
4. What are some things you would like to see happen?
5. What objectives would you like to see come out of this Splatsin initiative?
6. Are you interested in getting involved, if no how would you like to see Splatsin
involved?
This information will inform the caribou recovery plan and recommendations for opportunities
for collaboration, recovery activities, priorities as well as next steps for Splatsin in caribou
recovery.
Please submit your responses to Torrie Nicholas, Junior Biologist at Yucwmenlúcwu and
community coordinator for the caribou recovery planning project via email at
Torrie Nicholas is a member of the community who graduated with a degree in Natural
Resource Sciences from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops. She is passionate about the
environment as well as our history and wants to represent Splatsin to the best of her ability.

A big welcome to Dorothy Christian, associate director, Indigenous initiatives
Dorothy Christian will be joining the
Teaching and Learning Centre on February 1,
2019. Photo credit: Martin Dee, UBC.
Dear SFU colleagues:
When the SFU Aboriginal Reconciliation
Council released its report in Fall 2017, one of
the dominant themes was the call for “Nothing
about us without us.”
The Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) has
taken that call literally. Today I am happy to
announce that Dr. Dorothy Christian will be joining the Centre in the newly established role of
Associate Director, Indigenous Initiatives, on February 1, 2019.
Dorothy is a scholar and visual storyteller from the Secwepemc and Syilx Nations of British
Columbia. She has an MA in Communications from SFU and a PhD in Educational Studies
from UBC, and she has extensive experience as a producer, director and writer in film and
television.
In her new role she will be responsible for the strategic planning, co-development,
implementation, evaluation and management of Indigenous initiatives associated with the TLC.
She will also chair a new TLC Advisory Committee for Indigenous Initiatives and will work to
build strong relationships and partnerships with Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities at
SFU and beyond.
I am excited to welcome someone with Dorothy’s rich mix of experience, knowledge and
dedication to the TLC. I believe her deep familiarity with Indigenous methodologies and
systems of knowledge will be a transformative gift for the Centre and the SFU teaching and
learning community.
Sincerely,
Brad Johnson
Director, Teaching and Learning Centre
