Dear MBA Aspirant,
Thank you for considering SPJIMR for this vital milestone of your life. Getting into the right
B-school is paramount. While this Brochure will provide you with enough information about
SPJIMR, let me share with you the fundamentals that make SPJIMR what it is. It is likely that
you have selected SPJIMR because of its consistent rank amongst the top ten B-schools in
India in every poll. It is possible that superior placement, the best in Mumbai, have attracted
your attention. Not that these facts are not important, but what is more relevant is that we
are unique in several respects. Our endeavour is to ensure that the SPJIMR experience is a
significant long-term value addition to an individual's career, indeed his/her entire life, and
is not merely placement as an end in itself. This more lasting objective calls for resolving
three contradictions that we believe we have successfully addressed.
A synthesis of western values of efficiency - a concern for ends, and eastern values and
ethos – an equal concern for means.
Co-existence of collaborative and competitive modes - striving for individual excellence
and yet reinforcing the 'group culture' through daily activities.
Commitment to material advancement - with sensitivity to distributive-justice.
Our selection process depends to a large extent on the softer skills of a person, and not
merely on IQ or for that matter, on work experience. To us while a sharp mind is important,
more so is a curious and sensitive one, backed by rich values and integrity. Hence
selection has a lot to do with interviews, besides “CAT scores” and other facts sought
through application forms.
Finally the Institute is an integrated human organism of faculty, administration, and student
participants actively involved in administration and developing the Institute towards
attaining higher levels of excellence. This is a constant ongoing exercise and that's what
the SPJIMR experience is all about.
This Institute is what it is today because of students as much as anything else. If you concur
with the above, let us explore the possibility of being together. Good luck for your future
plans.

About SPJIMR
S.P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR) is a
constituent unit of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which was founded
in 1938 by the then Kulpati Dr. K.M. Munshi and 53 other eminent
professionals. Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is registered under the Societies
Registration Act XXI of 1860 and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950. It is
a trust of repute and eminence and is universally recognized for its
educational as well as cultural activities.
SPJIMR grew rapidly in eminence from one of the three B-schools in the
country in 1981 to one of the top ten B-schools in the country by 1994-
1995. Since then, it has continued to retain this position with ease during
the last decade.
The bold move to disaffiliate SPJIMR from the then Bombay University
to have freedom in course curriculum, pedagogic innovations and
pioneering programmers in socially under managed sectors was a
beginning of its journey to achieve the mandate it has given itself in terms
of unique innovative and distinct path in management education
SPJIMR recognizes its twin roles as a responsible member of Bharatiya
Vidya Bhavan and responsive member of the Indian society at large and
looks at itself in a wider context 'beyond MBA' institution by engaging
itself in socially relevant segments of the Indian society.
In all its activities, SPJIMR emphasizes the twin objectives of
'Influencing practice' and 'Promoting value-based growth'. SPJIMR
will attempt to influence organizations through its participants from
various programs / activities, thus acquiring recognition as an influential
member in Indian society in the field of management education.
Today, SPJIMR has to its credit five centers with multifarious activities,
two-year full time post graduate diploma in Management and a few
continuing executive education programmes. It has also made its
presence felt in global arena and has truly become a larger than
B-school.
SPJIMR is an autonomous management institute with entrepreneurial
agility that has made it totally self-financing, personal freedom with
professional accountability and corporatized culture, structure and
processes
“A hundred times everyday I
remind myself that my inner and
outer life depend on the labors of
other men, living and dead. And
that I must exert myself in order
to give in the same measure that
I have received and am still
receiving.”
- Albert Einstein
3
Philosophical Pillars
“The essential spring of all
growth is within you. All that
you can get from without is some
food - material or spiritual- with
which to build your organism,
and some stimulus to spur you to
activity. What is really essential
in your development, you must
do for yourself.”
- Alfred North Whitehead

Curriculum par excellence
The flagship PGDM program at SPJIMR is designed around courses which
strengthen the knowledge, skills and attitude essential for a successful
manager. These courses have been inspired from leading western business
schools like Harvard, MIT and Stanford and are regularly benchmarked against
the top business schools in the country. The content is frequently updated to
meet the best global standards and demands of the industry. Courses are
piloted by top-notch faculty, people for whom their profession is their passion.
Subjects like ADMAP (Assessment & Development of Managerial &
Administrative Potential) are designed to inculcate administrative skills in the
participants, the budding managers, through practice in an 'action learning
laboratory' setting. Participants contribute to various institution processes like
admissions, benchmarking of course structure, public relations, instilling
entrepreneurial instincts, organizing competitions, placements and many
more by being a part of numerous committees. Through Projects, participants
get an opportunity to work for the live projects of the government functionalities
and under the aegis of the likes of the Commissioner of Brihanmumbai
Municipal Corporation. A great emphasis is laid on sensitizing participants to
the socialneeds and unique initiatives such as DOCC (Development of
Corporate Citizenship) and Abhudaya form the pillars to help attain this goal.
Prominent amongst the initiatives taken by the Institute is also a Personal
Growth Lab in Lonavala which is a four day trip of self discovery through a mix of
learning and fun, with team activities and adventure sports. The popularity of
this event is such that alumni, who passed out more than a decade ago, still
reminisce it and wish to be a part of it again.
The pedagogy is a mix of lectures, classroom discussions, case studies,
simulations, project work and group studies. Various case studies from the best
B-schools like Harvard are taken up for discussions giving a realistic picture to
the theoretical inputs. A wide array of subjects leads to the participant
becoming proficient in not only his/her specialization but also other areas of
importance like finance, entrepreneurship, operations and management,
information technology, catering to the needs of business environment.
SPJIMR uses a grading system in all its evaluation methods comprising
quizzes, assignments, case analyses, project work, internships, mid-terms and
comprehensive examinations.
We start-off with a one month foundation course which deals with some basic
fundamentals of subjects taken-up in the subsequent months. The first year
curriculum aims at strengthening the fundamentals in all areas of functional
management and provides a holistic perspective of general management. This
is spread over 3 trimesters. The second year curriculum is based on a chosen
area of specialization and is customized to the participant's career aspirations
and industry requirements. At SPJIMR, equal emphasis is laid on soft skills.
Proper communication and behavioral tendencies are groomed through open
discussions and working in groups. Simulations form a major part of the
curriculum giving an exact feel of the business environment. Care is taken to
see that the course is in line with the values of the Institute, as is evident from the
importance attached to courses like Business Ethics and Gita Shibir, which
relates management with the Bhagvad Gita.
Management by objectives is the central key to all learning; each subject seeks
to fulfill a certain objective as the participant is groomed for a successful
management career.

Development of Corporate Citizenship (DOCC)
Assessment & Development of Managerial & Administrative Potential
This is an indigenously developed initiative of S.P. Jain where the participants choose for either an institute committee or a BMC project to work on during
the first year of their program. It is learning administration by doing, by getting things done. This presupposes working in a team with people of varying
individual goals but working towards a common organizational purpose. It acts as a laboratory to test the theories. The outcome is a rich learning
experience of managing people, resources and systems.
DOCC was initiated at SPJIMR with a view to bring management education closer to reality in the Indian
context. Our aim is to inculcate attitudes and values in future managers by sensitizing the participants
to the realities of the under-privileged. It also helps the NGO sector to strengthen their management by
improving effectiveness and efficiency through seminars, workshops and publications.
Participants are expected to undertake a project with any organization working in the social sector, for
ex. NGOs, the Government of India schemes, for a period of 6 weeks at the end of first year. Projects
over the years have spanned sectors like primary education, healthcare, information systems in rural
areas etc.
Beyond Class Room Learning
A proactive and formally planned programme for developing attitudes and skills-completing the troika of management capability
development has been firmly institutionalized within SPJIMR's beyond classroom curriculum through a variety of vehicles.
Abhyudaya (Growing Together)
Is a pedagogic innovation to provide a non classroom experiential learning experience to PGDM
participants during their management program. It is our belief at the institute that development
of future leaders having character and integrity can be achieved by facilitating in them the
“right attitudes” and sensitizing participants to poverty, moral dilemmas and unstructured
environment.
Every participant takes up mentorship of a bright student from the economically weaker section
to help them reach greater heights in their career and help to their community and family in
return. We as mentors play the role of a catalyst to fully realize the potential of the 'Sitaras', as we
call our mentees. This process of mentoring not only helps develop competencies required for
further career development, but also enables one to evolve as a complete individual.

Autumn Project
PG Lab (Personal Growth)
The second year curriculum provides a sharper focus, allowing customization to an individual's specific career aspirations through the concept of
autumn projects. Under this concept, the candidates work on live projects with the corporate for a period of 8 weeks during the 2nd year after completing
one trimester of their specialization. The autumn project includes domestic as well as international internships. It gives them an exposure to real life
organizational situations, drawing parallels between management theory and practice. It also helps them to select a specific industry or sector to work
with in the future.
Our participants, armed with the maturity and experience, gained from the rigorous curriculum and
experiential learning process, have richly contributed to the organizations in terms of conceptual inputs.
Believing in innovative pedagogical innovations, SPJIMR conducts the Personal Growth Lab (PG Lab)
that strives for experiential and lifelong learning for the PGDM participants. The PG Lab is designed to
make participants understand themselves, their strengths, attitudes and personality through various
activities, that includes ice-breaker events, group tasks, team building games, trekking etc., so as to
make the participants appreciate team dynamics thereby learn the skills needed for effective and
synergetic team work.
Anandwan (The Age of Innocence)
Anandwan is a noble initiative, started by Baba Amte, to treat and rehabilitate
leprosy victims from the disadvantaged sections of society. Today it is not just a
shelter for these patients, but serves the livelihood of 3500 people, serving the
blind, deaf and dumb. It is a self-sufficient village with people engaged in more
than 100 different occupations. All they need from outside is oil, petrol, salt and
sugar. Year after year, Anandwan has been inviting the students of SPJIMR,
silently though, through the special bonding both the organizations fondly share.
It is through these unique initiatives taken up by the Institute that makes SPJIMR a
premier Management School.
Gita Shibir (Management by Gita)
This is another unique experience at SPJIMR. It's a course in which participants and faculty conducts a series of discussions on religious scriptures and
their relevance with the current management thinking. The participants learn how the concept of dharma can be applied to our daily lives as well as the
corporate world. Such discussions, embedded with discourses from renowned gurus, broaden the vision of participants and enables them to appreciate
eastern ethos.13

Difficulty is an excuse history never accepts. While much has been speculated about the job scenario in today's turbulent times and its
impact on the exalted histories of B-school placements, SPJIMR is creating a unique mark by crafting what seems like a perfect
culmination of its PGDM course.
Current economic times which is still in the recovering phase, the institute ensured a successful placement season for the PGDM class
of 2010 garnering support from its influential alumni network and making use of its relationship with over 1200 companies.
74 companies visited the campus giving 224 offers to the 175 strong PGDM Class of 2010, with 21 of these companies being first-time
recruiters.
r u l e
15
SPJIMR PGDM Placements 2010 - Where quality matters
Financial Services dominated the placements with nearly 24% offers. Traditional sectors such as FMCG, Telecom and IT accounted for 38% of the total
offers made. Consulting firms contributed to 15% of total offers while sectors unexplored in the past like PSUs, regulatory bodies, market research,
pharmaceutical, educational services, etc. contributed 23% to the total offers made. Some of the prominent names recruiting this year include TAS,
Microsoft, ICICI Bank, Standard Chartered, HUL, P&G, Asian Paints, Avalon Consulting, L'oreal, Yes Bank, Bosch, GE, IBM, HP, Novartis, CTS, Tata
Capital, TSMG, Deloitte, Cadbury, etc.
The institute believes that a diversified participant profile ensured by its unique admission process provides rich talent for companies to recruit at lateral
as well as entry level managerial positions. 51 pre-placement offers were made to the participants on account of the Autumns Internships. The placement
season also saw participants bagging foreign offers in the areas of consulting and general management.
Economic conditions still in the recovering phase and seem to be improving on the whole, but the support that SPJIMR has seen from the corporate world

'Brand Bajao', was a unique marketing and branding competition where the brightest minds from B-Schools across India tried to create a Rock 'Brand' which can move into unchartered territory and establish a foothold in the Indian music industry.
The competition challenged the all budding marketers in India, to launch a highly unconventional product, a task which required the use of all the traditional tools of marketing in the most innovative ways.
This is one quiz which tested those little grey cells of the top brains across B-schools! After a written elimination round, the main event was spread over several electrifying rounds where the participants competed in a war of wits to see who is the sharpest of them all.
A plethora of problems stares starkly in the face of our country, our society and our people. Here the participants were given a chance to make a difference, a difference they had been thinking about, a difference that would mark the beginning of the long road to change.
We gave this opportunity through our “live case study contest”. They were challenged to come up with the most feasible, innovative and practical solutions. These solutions were to be presented to the organisation- IOCL, with the hope of it being implemented.
Cross Talk was a one-of-a-kind opportunity to exhibit the rare skills of strategizing & debating.
The event consisted of a debate where every team had one member speaking for the topic, one against the topic and the third member handling Question and Answer session.
This event required the participants to write a financial paper and present it before the esteemed panel of judges.
The C-Table Challenge was an event containing a series of exciting and mind-simulating business tasks which brought out the smarter side of the participants. The teams were first asked to present a comprehensive analysis of a case study (Avalon), and the team that made it to the finals were tested for the characteristics that make a successful team where members complement each others' skills and together have the ability to make the best lot to be the ones at “The C-Table” – Business Acumen, Common Sense, Courage under Pressure and Wit. They were required to participate in surprise tasks like selling goods in parts of the city, within given budget constraints.
Odori (Dance- Solo and Group), Dhwani (Music- Band performances), Just A Minute (JAM), Antakshari Competitions.
Started 7 years back as a voluntary non-classroom initiative it has almost become a way of life at SPJIMR today. GASP (Guild of Actors@SP) was initiated under the aegis of the ADMAP (Assessment and Development of Managerial and Administrative Potential) Program in the year 2003. This confluence of theatre and management is a platform where participants use theatre to put to use the various management and administrative principles they learn during the course. As the years have progressed, GASP has become an expression of SPJIMR's creative and theatrical identity. Planned, driven and executed entirely by students, it is an annual event where the new PGDM batch displays its mettle at conducting and acting in a full play staged at the SPJIMR auditorium for all its family members.

The Photography Club (Pratibimb):
CANVAS is a student initiative that caters to the common interest
of participants in the field of fine arts. It is a forum to interact with
like minds, exchange ideas and learn through experimentation.
CANVAS provides a platform to the artistically inclined students to
showcase their skills and talent and gives others an opportunity to
identify and hone their creative skills through an interactive
learning program.
The Book Club, one of the modalities under ADMAP, uses classic
literature to bring out different examples of leadership under
different contexts.
This year the Book Club, under the guidance of Prof. Uma Narain,
went one step further in its innovativattempts, by conducting the
book club sessions in association with Dr. John Clemens,
Executive Director ofthe Hartwick Leadership Institute. The
members of the Book Club participated in 3 sessions with Dr.
Clemens, which were conducted over video conference, during
which they discussed three books each dealing with different
aspects of management and leadership.
The Photography Club kick started in 2008 blossoming from special interests of the students. It was an alternative means of relaxing in terms of
photography. The photography club has been successful in integrating its interests with DOCC project people. They had a competition exclusively for the
pictures snapped by the participants during their DOCC projects. Now the club is active in covering all the events of the institute.
