Spitalfields Music creates bespoke musical experiences, specially tailored to the area and community in which we find a constant source of inspiration. This December, hear the best in early music performance alongside storytelling, miniature drawing room concerts, dinner and music at a Michelin-starred restaurant and explorations of song from various times and places. Throughout the evenings we welcome return performances from The Sixteen, Joglaresa, I Fagiolini and La Nuova Musica, alongside debuts from Gallicantus, White Rabbit and Gavin Bryars’s ‘circus band’. Meanwhile, during the days we’ve got special concerts for young listeners and composers as well as end-of-year celebrations with our community choirs, who will sing the year out in their own inimitable style.

Housed in some of Spitalfields’ most treasured venues, ranging from the grandeur of Christ Church to the intimacy of a Georgian front room, our programme promises to bring some welcome warmth to your winter this year. I hope there will be lots to tempt you, and look forward to welcoming you to the Festival.

The London Contemporary Orchestra showcase three contemporary works; Vivier’s rarely heard Pulau Dewata captures the spirit of Bali, setting the scene for the world premiere of Suckling’s Concerto for Violin and Chamber Orchestra and Grisey’s late masterpiece Vortex Temporum, which explores time as perceived by whales, humans, birds and insects completes the programme.

Gavin Bryars’s extraordinarily versatile ‘circus band’ brings together ten songs by Tom Waits, two by Kurt Weill, a sea shanty, a hymn, a couple of instrumental gypsy tangos and a classic Fellini film score. With mezzo-soprano Jessica Walker at the centre, Waits’s and Brennan’s songs of love, heartbreak and intoxication are revealed in all their strange beauty.

Open Ears In the House

Devised and presented by Duncan Chapman

Explore the incredible art of composition and making music from scratch. Meet our laptop orchestra of local young musicians, hear pieces for French horn and fog horn and discover the 13th-century Japanese Shakuhachi, with sampling and electronics all performed in surround sound in Shoreditch Church. Prepare to have your ears opened!

Recitals by students from the Royal Academy of Music

Join us in exploring the stunning Georgian architecture of Spitalfields with a series of five mini recitals and a journey through musical history, where new commissions stand alongside early works. This event is part a concert series, part a historical tour, set in a glorious selection of houses. Come and discover this unique part of London through music, finishing up with a small drinks reception at the final venue.

We regret that this event is not fully accessible to customers with limited mobility.

Dialogues of Sorrow Music by John Coprario, Robert Ramsey, Richard Dering, John Ward and Thomas Weelkes

Breaking onto the scene in 2009, Gallicantus’s recording Dialogues of Sorrow met with huge critical acclaim. Nearly four hundred years ago James I’s son, Prince Henry, died of typhoid fever following a swim in the Thames. His death inspired some of the most exquisite verse and music reflecting a nation in mourning. Performing this material in concert for the first time, Gabriel Crouch’s new choir make their Spitalfields debut.

Over the last 25 years, I Fagiolini have delighted audiences with their particular brand of serious music-making, humour and innovative stagings.
