Confession

Let us confess our sin

in the presence of the One

who blesses us and meets our need.

God of compassion,

sometimes we are pretty unsettled.

We wrestle all night with worry

instead of resting in your presence.

We assert our own goodness

instead of embracing yours.

We turn away those hungry for help

instead of trusting you and feeding them

from your limitless supply of blessings.

Forgive us, heal us, wake us up.

Guide our thoughts, words, and actions

so that, by your grace at work in us,

others would experience your loving provision.

Forgiveness

The God of steadfast love is our refuge and Savior.

In Jesus Christ, we who are broken

are healed, forgiven, filled, and made new.

Amen.

Prayer of the Day

Let us pray together.

Glorious God, your generosity waters the world with goodness,

and you cover creation with abundance.

Awaken in us a hunger for the food that satisfies both body and spirit,

and with this food fill all the starving world;

through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

First Reading: Genesis 32:22-31 CEV

A reading from Genesis, the 32nd chapter.

Jacob got up in the middle of the night

and took his wives, his eleven children,

and everything he owned

across to the other side of the Jabbok River for safety.

Afterwards, Jacob went back and spent the rest of the night alone.

A man came and fought with Jacob until just before daybreak.

When the man saw that he could not win,

he struck Jacob on the hip and threw it out of joint.

They kept on wrestling until the man said,

“Let go of me! It’s almost daylight.”

“You can’t go until you bless me,” Jacob replied.

Then the man asked, “What is your name?”

“Jacob,” he answered.

The man said, “Your name will no longer be Jacob.

You have wrestled with God and with men, and you have won.

That’s why your name will be Israel,

(meaning, ‘one who strives with God’).”

Jacob said, “Now tell me your name.”

“Don’t you know who I am?” he asked. And he blessed Jacob.

Jacob said, “I have seen God face to face, and I am still alive.”

So he named the place Peniel, (meaning, ‘the face of God’).

The sun was coming up as Jacob was leaving Peniel.

He was limping because he had been struck on the hip.

Word of God, Word of life. Thanks be to God.

Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5 CEV

A reading from Paul’s letter to the Romans, the ninth chapter.

I am a follower of Christ,

and the Holy Spirit is a witness to my conscience.

So I tell the truth and I am not lying

when I say my heart is broken and I am in great sorrow.

I would gladly be placed under God’s curse

and be separated from Christ for the good of my own people.

They are the descendants of Israel,

and they are also God’s chosen people.

God showed them his glory, made agreements with them,

and gave them his Law.

The temple is theirs and so are the promises that God made to them.

They have those famous ancestors,

who were also the ancestors of Jesus Christ.

I pray that God, who rules over all,

will be praised forever! Amen.

Gospel: Matthew 14:13-21 NIV

The Good News from Matthew, the 14th chapter. Open our hearts, Lord.

When Jesus heard (about John the Baptist’s beheading by Herod),

he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.

Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd,

he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said,

“This is a remote place, and it’s already getting late.

Send the crowds away,

so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food.”

Jesus replied, “They do not need to go away.

You give them something to eat.”

“We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish,”

they answered.

“Bring them here to me,” he said.

And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.

Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven,

he gave thanks and broke the loaves.

Then he gave them to the disciples,

and the disciples gave them to the people.

They all ate and were satisfied,

and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken

pieces that were left over.

The number of those who ate was about five thousand men,

besides women and children.

This is the Good News! Thanks be to God! Hallelujah!

Gathered by God’s grace and empowered by the Holy Spirit,

we invite and welcome all people to join us on our journey

Confident of God’s care and upheld by the Spirit,

Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory.

In great love you sent to us Jesus, your Son:

a miracle-worker who cared enough that people were hungry

that he transformed a single modest lunch into a feast for thousands,

a teacher who, with love,

clarified his religion’s complicated laws,

a healer who boldly touched the sick and suffering,

a truth-teller who insisted

that the poor are full members of God’s beloved family,

and our Savior, who, on the cross, opened his arms to all.

Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours,

now and forever. Amen.
