RESIDENTS WELCOME

Local residents in the Spirit Quarters neighbourhood were on hand to welcome the first new resident to the area following completion of the new properties.

Caroline Flavell moved into her new 3-bedroomed Keepmoat Home on Petitor Crescent where on arrival she received a specially prepared Welcome Pack, holding a whole host of useful household items like light bulbs, teabags and coffee as a moving-in gift from the Deedmore Residents Association.

Caroline said: “It was a wonderful surprise receiving the gift from the local community, it was completely unexpected and made moving in a little bit more special! We are loving making our new house a home and look forward to meeting our new neighbours.”

Vicky Scott, Chair of Deedmore Residents Association, said: “We wanted to do something to make sure that all families who move into the new homes felt welcome and informed of what was going on in the neighbourhood”.

The Spirit Quarters area has a strong history of residents who are committed to the area. There are four resident groups making it a neighbourly area.

A PLACE OF PRIDE...RESIDENTS AT THE HEART

Active residents and community leaders in the Spirit Quarters neighbourhood are involved in a resident-led community trust that has the local neighbourhood at its heart.

Moat House Community Trust will work with residents and local groups to give the local community a strong voice. The Trust has been developing itself over the last three years and is run by a 15 strong board of directors, the majority of which are local residents.

Martin Smith, local resident and Chair of the Trust (pictured), said: “People living in these neighbourhoods have got used to being involved and committed to making decisions about their area and it is the role of the Trust to make sure this continues.

“We are very proud of this neighbourhood and want there to be a continued sense of pride in the area and the Trust will act as a vehicle for this.”

The Trust has already set up three social enterprises– a community café at Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre, Purple Patch

Communications (a design, communications and PR company) and Moat House Business Centre. It is also in the process of setting up its own consultancy service. Social enterprises are businesses that invest profits back into the local neighbourhood for community activities.

As well as running local businesses, Moat House Community Trust will give residents opportunities to speak up about priorities in their area, help improve local services and continue to promote a positive reputation for the Spirit Quarters area.

Martin is positive about the future: “Moat House Community Trust is well positioned to embrace opportunities through the new Government’s Big Society agenda. Myself and local residents believe there is a bright future ahead,” said Martin.

FANTASTIC LEISURE FACILITIES

An award-winning neighbourhood facility in the Spirit Quarters area celebrated its two year anniversary this month.

The £11m Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre, funded by Coventry NDC, The Football Foundation and Sport England, was officially opened in March 2009. On the opening day local residents joined former Coventry FC Manager Chris Coleman and then Regional Minister Ian Austin MP to sign a special plaque to mark the opening ceremony.

Since then the boomerang shaped building has been recognised as a real community hub and has scooped a number of different awards including the FORCE Regeneration Award and Best Health and Fitness venue at the 2010 Godiva Awards. The Centre is the newest leisure facility in the whole of Coventry.

Alan Tyrell, a local resident who was a driving force behind the setting up of the Centre said: “Local people are proud to have such excellent facilities on their doorstep. Two years later it’s easy to see the benefits this building has brought to the area.”

The centre located on Winston Avenue brings a number of services and facilities under one roof and has something for all ages and interests. If you want to keep fit (or get fit) there’s a stunning 40-station air conditioned fitness suite. This has the latest fitness equipment, audio visual and music systems with friendly and experienced gym

instructors. Full training programme and fitness testing is available from staff to help you feel welcome. There’s a wide range of fitness classes such as boxercise, bums and tums, circuit training, dance, fit-ball, pilates, street-dance, tai-chi, trampolining, yoga and zumba. There’s gym and fitness groups specifically aimed at young people, women and older people.

If you want to try your hand at sports there a range of activities either run by the Centre or by other groups. These include: badminton, basketball, fencing, indoor bowls, kickboxing, martial arts, netball and table-tennis. The Centre has the latest third generation astroturf pitches available for hire or you can join up with one of the existing football clubs that train here.

Children are well catered for with a range of after-school sports activities and holiday clubs and camps. The Centre offers a monthly pass that includes after-school activities for only £10.

The Centre has excellent community facilities including studio, sports hall and classrooms that are used for a range of community uses including community fundays, birthday parties, resident meetings, church group meetings and conferences. If you need money advice, the Wood End Advice Centre is also based at the Centre. If you want to have a bite to eat then you can pop into the Moat House Café which is open all day and provides a range of snacks and meals.

The Centre has a crèche available. Whilst you use the facilities in the Centre you can be confident that your kids will be looked after.

Modern primary schoolsThe neighbourhood has some of the best school facilities in Coventry. These include modern facilities such as Moat House Primary School (www.moathouse.coventry.sch.uk) and Henley Green Primary School. Castle Wood Broad Spectrum School is a new build opened in 2010 (www.castlewood.coventry.sch.uk). St Patrick’s primary is also nearby (www.st-patricks.coventry.sch.uk)

New Manor Farm themed children’s play areaThe play area which opened in summer 2010 has a pirate-theme and a range of fun and adventurous play equipment including a pirate ship, a zip-wire, swings

Moat House ParkThe park has recently been improved with new paths, landscaping and planting. It includes a nature garden and gives an excellent opportunity for walks. The Sowe Valley footpath walk starts nearby that leads out to the Warwickshire countryside.

Work on a new £725k building at Henley College Coventry, located opposite the Spirit Quarters redevelopment, is now underway after receiving the green light from Coventry Council.Constructors have now started work on the additional storey to the e-skills building at the further education and training college. The new facility which will consist of nine new classrooms, working areas and toilet facilities.College Estates Manager Peter Hammond said: “We’re delighted to have been able to commence the construction on time and look forward to having a fantastic facility up and running in time for the start of the new academic year in September.”The new facility will be used by students studying Early Years and Health and Social Care programmes which have seen a considerable increase in numbers over the years.Principal Ray Goy added: “The number of students in these areas continues to increase and we need to make sure students have great facilities. This is another step towards realising our ambition of first class facilities for Henley College students”

A PLACE TO LEARN...BUILDING WORK BEGINS CHILDREN LOOK TO THE FUTURE

Schoolchildren from the Spirit Quarters neighbourhood have teamed up to put on an educational play to celebrate the bright future ahead in their local area.

Moat House Primary and Henley Green Primary have been working closely with creative company Highly Sprung to put together a special performance involving over 50 local schoolchildren.

The groups have been working on the performance since January and many of the children have contributed with their own ideas on how the play will reflect what it is like living in the neighbourhood now and what the vision for the future is.

Sarah Worth from Highly Sprung said: “As they’ve looked back into the history of their area, the children have realised how much their neighbourhood has to offer.

The play will bring together children from different schools and promises to be an eye-catching and inspirational performance; it will be

a real credit to the area”

The performance will include reference to the many new facilities in the neighbourhood, in particular the new education facilities, as well as the Spirit Quarters redevelopment.

“Children are the future of the neighbourhood. They are so important to our community. We’re really fortunate that the schools in the area are modern and welcoming as this really helps the learning environment,” said Pete James, Headteacher of Moat House Primary School.

“We add to this a welcoming and supportive approach to enable children to reach their potential. Children and schools are at the heart of this neighbourhood and we focus on increasing children’s self-esteem and aspirations for the future.”

Educational facilities in the area include three Primary Schools, one Children’s Centre, Broad Spectrum School, three Secondary Schools and one Further Education College.

The first performance of the play will take place at Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre, followed by performances at Moat House Primary School and one at Henley Green Primary School.
