Offiial Newsletter

This December, students of BA celebrated the 97th year of the college as the premier business education institution in the coun-try through the much-awaited BA Week activities. With the theme “This is Us”, the BA Week celebrations this year focused on what makes a BA student true to its core. The theme also represents the indelible identity unique to the college and its stu-dents amidst the tumults of the previous year. As such, fitting event titles such as “Diversity” for BACBACAN 2, “Versatility” for Bb. BA and “Giving Back” for Staff and Faculty Tribute were created to put the BA identity into full circle during the festivities.

The celebrations were kick started by BAC-BACAN 2 wherein different organizations of the college battled head-to-head on various sporting events and mini activi-ties. After which, the stage was set for the gallery and launch event. By Wednesday, SBSC treated the student community with the Grand Feast at the cafeteria. The next

evening, machismo turned femme fatale as batches battled it out in the Binibining BA. True to its promise from previous years, BA Culminight this year delivered as most of our BA students had a blast. The follow-ing morning, SBSC amd various BA based organizations hosted the annual Staff and Faculty Tribute as a simple token of grati-tude to our professors and staff members in the college. The whole BA week celebration was concluded by the Lantern Parade, which debuted a life-sized replica of the Spirit of Business to the whole UP community. The BA Week this year was not just re-engineered to be more fun and enlighten-ing to our students. SBSC’s thrust for the semester is to make our students feel at home in the difficult times of academic requirements. As such, BA Week pro-vided an avenue for our students to take a look back into how their identities were shaped by the institution they call home.

New years signal new beginnings, and this January, we start off with a bang as we release the first ever Spirit of Business edition for the se-mester. It has been an exciting second semester since we kick started our classes last November. With the flurry of activity in the general registration, recruitment and reaffirmation week all the way to the celebration of our 97th year as the premier business education insti-tution in the country, we have had our fair share of fun and exciting activities all the way to Christmas break. However, now, we flex again our muscles amidst the host of school works and cases left collecting dust as we pranced ourselves from one party to another during the break. Nonetheless, your School of Business Student Council will be with you every step of the way as we march through the remaining 3 months of our academic year. We will serve up academically enriching opportunities as well as relevant student services that would gear you for the remainder of the semester with the release of our Academic Kit, the launch of the Theft Campaign Initiative and the Marketing Partner Week. Not to mention, we will present a host of new activities such as the much-awaited Finance Youth Initiative, the introduction of our incoming freshmen to business through the 2014 UP Business Camp as well as the awards-night for our organizations, the League of Excel-lence culminating activity.

As we chime in the New Year, I hope that we have renewed energy to work together again as one College in making our collegiate experi-ence here in UP the best there could be! To the next three months and to the years beyond, we in the SBSC hope that our projects and services will leave a legacy to you and to others in our community.

Happy New Year to all!

CAFETERIA UPDATEby Jet Padernal

At the end of last semester, Chicka-Rue voluntarily exited after more or less three months as CBA’s cafeteria concessionaire. Its stay in BA has brought about issues and controversies regarding pricing, serving size and the use of styrofoam.

The student council addressed this issue by conducting satisfaction surveys and FGDs. Results of these were forwarded to the Admin and BCO for consideration in the search for our next concessionaire.

Historically, it takes around a semester to seal the deal with a new concessionaire primarily because of the bidding and accreditation procedures facilitated by the BCO.

Currently, the student council are collating alternatives to recommend the BCO for the time being (i.e. waking the rule on the ban of food sales, allowing the council to facilitate a temporary concessionaire who can provide food services/food sale within the college’s premises)

The student council is coordinating with interested third parties who are seeking accreditation and planning to apply as a food concessionaire in the college.

Within the next weeks, SBSC will have a dialogue with the BCO and the admin to discuss such recommendations. For the mean time, SBSC will be releasing a primer on where to get/buy lunch near BA.

PARKING LOT Renovated!by Clare Co

The School of Business Parking Lot has recently been renovated to provide a smoother road for students and faculty alike. This development involved repairing crevices and pits with fresh cement and clearing out spare rocks and rubble previously scattered in the area. The execution of this project is part of the administration’s efforts to provide its constituents with a better environment inside the campus.

THE STUDENT CODEby Trinette Manahan

How many of us joined our student organizations during our first semester in our first year here in UP? If the UP Student Code would be approved by the Board of Regents, no freshie on his/her first semester will be able to join any student organization.

It is stated in Article IV Section IV of the UP Code of Student Conduct that accepting a student who has not completed a one-semester residency in UP Diliman for membership in a registered student org is an act of misconduct for students.

If any student is caught violating this provision, he/she shall face suspension for one semester to one academic year. Provided further that any student found to have accepted two or more such students to the organization, the corrective measure shall be suspension for one academic year to expulsion.

These proposed amendments to the student codes are still pending for approval since the last scheduled BOR meeting which included this in its agenda did not push through due to the lack of quorum.

Last December 8, 2013 was Diversity: This is Us. or more commonly referred to as BAC-BACAN 2 which marked the beginning of BA Week for this school year.

Ten out of seventeen organiza-tions from the Business League participated in this sports fest and were divided into four groups: Wok Dis Weygandt, World Trade Centaurs, Fourth Back Bakas and the Techno Ti-tans with all of them competing for first place in Cheerdance, Basketball, Volleyball, Futsal, and Parlor games. These groups gave it their all and played their hearts out during this once-a-year inter-organization sports competition with World Trade Centaurs emerging as this year’s overall champion.

THE LAUNCHDecember 10, 2013 || 3rd Front Lobby

The BA Week launch was held last December 10, 2013 in the third floor front lobby where a lot of the student body gathered to hear about what’s in store for them in the week that was to come. There was a performance from the VSB Chorale and lots of prizes and freebies were given away. On top of that, it was also the launch of the BA Week gallery that featured the many aspects that makes up a BA student!

FESTIVITYDecember 11, 2013 || Cafeteria

The Grand Feast is definitely something that we look forward to every year during BA Week. It’s one of those events where we show that, amid diversity, we all have some-thing in common: our love for (free) food! Of course it wasn’t just the feast that the peo-ple looked forward to on that day, there was also a food-eating contest that a number of people joined which added some entertain-ment to the festivity.

Versatility: This is Us., BB. BA, is the inter-batch cross-dressing beauty pageant that only happens during BA Week. It judged by Riozaldy Cuyson, Arjay Mercado, and Pat Bringas and was held in the College of Engineering Theater at Melchor Hall. The contest showcased the beauty, brains, and talents of the contestants but what really distinguished it from other pageants is that it allowed the contestants to show to us their wit and not to mention class (and sometimes a lack thereof) that definitely made the audi-ence laugh every time one of the contestants cracked a joke or did something funny. The competition definitely brought out the versatility of the CBAers, especially the contestants, who proved to be as talented as they are good in class.

The That’s My Tomboy portion added a new dimension to the pageant this year as the con-testants’ escorts who were actually their female batchmates dressed up in suits also went up the stage to introduce themselves and convince the judge why they deserved to be the next our very own That’s My Tomboy. The winner of the portions was the terminals’ pride Ms. Alyanna Pepino. The night was concluded with, the last year’s winner, MJ De Leon’s final walk and passing of the crown to this year’s winner the Seniors’ BB. BA, Mark Gatpandan.

SPIRIT OF CHRISTMASDecember 18, 2013 || UP Diliman

The Spirit of Business is known as the colossal symbol of professionalism, en-terprise, and innovation. More than that, it symbolizes something deeper. It sym-bolizes the rise of volunteerism, nation building and shared progress. The Spirit of Business is about you, every Filipino who has surpassed any challenge, who is strong enough to start again, and those who went out of their comfort zone to aid their coun-trymen . This is the Spirit of Business..this is the true spirit of Christmas.

I didn’t feel that scared that night onstage at the University Theater. Perhaps I should have, with the crowd’s eyes and the glaring stage lights fixed on us. But the nights of practice had chased the fears out of me, and my choirmates had removed all my doubt. As the conductor gave us his signal and we let out the first note, I felt alive.

But two weeks before that night, I would come home after prac-tice feeling dead. I was not yet used to the late night practices at the third front lobby. Irregular rhythms, my voice getting lost in everyone else’s, high notes pulling at my vocal chords, plus the late hour – all of it had sucked out my energy. I couldn’t even get up to go to my desk and work on my academics.

It didn’t matter, though, not when there was music. One prac-tice, on a still night at the third floor, the chorus of “Bituing Natatangi” filled the third floor like a burst of musical color. Our voices, swelling with richness, intertwined. Our notes flut-tered in the air for a second before dying down. Just hearing that transported me back to the Nativity itself.I grew to love those practices just for moments like those. I loved the swell of pride after mastering a difficult part, or the breathlessness that came after a long, sweeping verse. I loved the cheers and the jokes that erupted from my choirmates after a good run – and I loved my choirmates, too.

The exhaustion meant nothing to me. The little hitches in prac-tice were mere inconveniences. All that mattered was making music with people who loved it as much as I did. And when our moment came on Karolfest night, I didn’t even care about the results. I just wanted to sing.

Last November 29, the Student Council, together with the admin organized a welcoming assembly for our special guests this semester, the cross-registrants from UP Tacloban.

The program was facilitated by an ad hoc team composed of the Externals, EdRes and Student Relations councilors. We prepared a presentation, games and snackds for them.

The cross-registrants were given a primer about the college and the university to aid them in adjusting and adapting to UP Diliman. More importantly, ways on how to provide help and support were discussed during the program.

Toward the end of the program, USC Councilor Aaron Letaba delivered a short welcoming speech and proposed ways to help the new additions to our student community.

BEST BARKADA FEATURESAUSAGEFEST

BarkadaComposition

Origin of Barkada NameBack in 2011, Nina and Marty celebrated their birthday and entitled the event, Sausagefest. This is the first time existing barkadas like Hoe-Bro, BMW, etc. was brought together. From them on, we started iden-tifying our barkada as Sausagefest.

Barkada TraditionsAfter the initial success of the original Sausagefest, we continue to hold multiple Sausagefests every now and then. These can happen anytime - sembreak, Christmas, back-to-school, birthdays- and anywhere - in houses, in Tagaytay/Nuvali, or even in our hearts. They may have dif-ferent themes, but they are all celebrations of each other, life, love, and meat.

Aside from Sausagefests, we also have traditions like first-day lunches in the Chocolate Kiss Cafe, “uniform” dress up days, and succeeding in life.

Why do you deserve to be BA’s Best Barkada this year?Well our barkada won the award this year tied up with NH. We also won best barkada in JMA last semester. Moreover, all of us individu-ally are actively involved in various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities.

How do you envision you plans for reunion 10 years from now? We’re gonna be in Paris or New York!

Graduation Ball Our family went to a simple five day esca-pade at a resort condominium beside SM Mall of Asia. Basically we just ate and swam and went to MOA and ate and slept for five days. Doing nothing is an art we truly mas-tered. 2014 will be a breakthrough year for me, I just can feel it in my bones! I will look back twenty years from now and say to my-

self, “That was the year.”
