Virtual Controller Setup

Refer to the following guides for detailed instructions on how to set up these types of Virtual Controllers, and how to install the Virtual Licenses on the Virtual Controllers:

Spirent TestCenter™ Virtual Controller Set up Guide (DOC10606)

Spirent Virtual Controller – VM (USB dongle or UUID versions) Quick Start Guide (DOC10586)

These guides are available in the Spirent TestCenter Documentation installer on the Customer Service Center/Downloads page and on the Customer Service Center (https://support.spirent.com).

Important: Without proper installation of the Virtual Controller and Virtual Licenses, you will not be able to run tests on your virtual ports.

10

Preparation: TCP/UDP ports used by the STC GUI and STCv

Ensure that the following TCP/UDP ports have been opened in any firewall between the Spirent TestCenter VM and GUI/BLL:

Ingress TCP port ranges:

▪ TCP port 40004: chassis-level

▪ TCP port 51204: port group-level

▪ TCP port 1666: for Spirent TestCenter upgrade through

STC UI (use Authentication mode to lock down this

port if required by your IT dept)

▪ TCP port 9090: for chassis controller REST API (was

used by some TEMEVA apps)

▪ TCP port 22: SSH for admin console access

Egress TCP and UDP port ranges:

▪ UDP port 123: NTP

▪ TCP ports 49100 – 65535: Ephemeral TCP/UDP port range

11

Installation: Fedora/CentOS

Make sure all system packages have been upgraded

Run “yum update”

Disable SELinux

Edit /etc/selinux/config

Change “SELINUX=enforcing” to “SELINUX=disabled”

Disable IPTables

Run “chkconfig iptables off”

Uninstall NetworkManager and firewalld

Run “yum remove NetworkManager firewalld”

Run “chkconfig network on”

Important Note: When NetworkManager is uninstalled, the network interface may no longer be configured correctly on boot up. Consult your distribution’s documentation for instructions to properly configure the network interface.

12

Installation: Fedora/CentOS (continued)

Install the required package, based on the kernel type

If your kernel is not PAE-enabled

Run “yum install libstdc++.i686 kernel-devel”

If your kernel is PAE-enabled

Run “yum install libstdc++.i686 kernel-PAE-devel”

Note: To determine if your kernel is PAE-enabled, run the command “uname –r”.If the string “PAE” appears in the kernel version, then your kernel is PAE-enabled.

13

Installation: Fedora/CentOS (continued)

Reboot the system

Install the TestCenter package

Run “yum install --nogpgcheck stca-<version>.rpm”

Note: If you get an error similar to this (applies to Fedora 23 and later only):

error: unpacking of archive failed on file

/mnt/spirent/ccpu/lib/python2.5/sqlite3/test/__init__.py;576340be:

cpio: Digest mismatch

Run this command to resolve it:

rpm -i --nofiledigest stca-<version>.rpm

14

Installation: Ubuntu

Make sure all system packages have been upgradedRun “apt-get update”

Run “apt-get upgrade”

Uninstall NetworkManager, SELinux, and ufwRun “apt-get remove network-manager selinux ufw”

Important Note: After NetworkManager is uninstalled, the network interface may no longer be configured correctly on boot up. Please consult your distribution’s documentation on how to properly configure the network interface. For example, for a DHCP configuration, you may need to add the following two lines to your /etc/network/interfaces file:

auto eth0Iface eth0 inet dhcp

Install dependenciesRun “apt-get install build-essential expect xinetd ntp”

On 64-bit systems:

Run “apt-get install lib32stdc++6”

15

Installation: Ubuntu (continued)

Reboot the system

Make sure the kernel headers package is installed

Run "apt-get install -y linux-headers-$(uname -r)"

Installation: Minimum CPU requirements

10GE multi-port (where P is the number of ports)

CPU = P * 2 + 1 cores or processors (=> 2Ghz)

1GE multi-port (where P is the number of ports):

CPU = P * 2 cores or processors (=> 2Ghz)

100M multi-port (where P is the number of ports):

CPU = P * 1 cores or processors (=> 2Ghz)

Example - Two 10GE port configuration on STC Anywhere:

Number of CPU: 2 * 2 + 1 = 5 cores or processors

17

Installation: Configuring the admin.py Script

Spirent TestCenter Anywhere is different from other versions of Spirent TestCenter Virtual and Spirent chassis

You do NOT telnet to the admin link to configure settings

You run “admin.py” after installing. This steps you through the admin configuration

Type “admin.py” or “/usr/bin/admin.py”

You will be presented with a series of questions to answer. The following pages list and explain the questions and how to answer them.

Page 18: Spirent TestCenter Anywhere · 2020-02-20 · 10 Preparation: TCP/UDP ports used by the STC GUI and STCv Ensure that the following TCP/UDP ports have been opened in any firewall between

18

Installation: Configuring the admin.py Script (continued)

“Do you want to reconfigure the admin.conf?” – Enter y to continue, n to exit.

If “y” is selected, you will see a printout of the current configuration

“Please input ntp server address: []” – Input an NTP server address. You can also use the Virtual Controller as an NTP source.

“Please input port speed (100M/1G/10G): [10G]” – This will display as that port speed in the Spirent TestCenter GUI. Functional licenses support 100M/1G, Performance licenses support 10G.

“Please input number of port groups: []” – How many test port groups do you want to create.

Note: Currently 1 port group is supported

“Do you want to configure the port group size automatically?” – This is where you assign the number of ports per port group.

“Please input the port group size (1~x): []” – How many test ports do you want to create under each port group.

19

Installation: Configuring the admin.py Script (continued)

“Do you want to reconfigure the Ethernet interface?” – This is where you assign the mapping between admin and test ports to NICs; if this is your first time configuring, you must enter y.

“Please choose the interface for admin (1-x):” – Select the interface that has network connectivity to the virtual controller.

“Please choose the interface for test port No.X (1-x):” – You will be asked this question for each test port you have assigned.

“Do you want to reconfigure the stca cpu affinity?” – Enter y to configure the CPU cores assigned to STC Anywhere, n to skip.

“Please choose the cpu set for the cpu affinity of stca (0-1, e.g. 0,1):” – Assign the number of CPU cores needed for STC Anywhere.

23

Installation: Using the Spirent TestCenter GUI with Spirent TestCenter Anywhere (continued)

The first time you try to reserve a Spirent TestCenter Virtual or Anywhere port, you will be required to set the Virtual Controller (also referred to as the License Server) IP address. This is required so the Spirent TestCenter GUI can communicate with the License Server.

Set the License Server IP address and refer to the Spirent TestCenter (BLL) Virtual Licensing document (DOC10638) for detailed instructions.

This document is available on the CSC Downloads page, as a Related Resource for Spirent TestCenter (https://support.spirent.com).
