Congregational Breakfast This Saturday Feb. 1st
This Saturday, February 1st, we are having a congregational
breakfast at 9:00 a.m. to update everyone on the progress ofthe Strategic Planning Committee. Please RSVP to RebeccaVaughan [email protected] call the church office(297-8563) if you plan to come to the breakfast. The StrategicPlanning Committee, chaired by Cyril Stewart, has beenworking very hard for six months to look at the future ministriesand facility challenges and limitations at Woodmont. Acongregational survey was conducted this fall and we will
be sharing the results and input received from themembership. Healthy congregations should always be lookingto the future and asking the question: "What is God calling us to
be and do?" I hope you can join us on Saturday.
Nominating Church Leadership
Effective lay leadership in a congregation is absolutelyessential. Lay leaders provide energy, vision, and guidance forthe church. Woodmont has always been blessed with strong layleadership. Every year, January is the designated time for ourchurch to begin the nominating process for leadership beginningin July. We are currently accepting nominations from thecongregation for the following positions through January 31st:1 Chair Elect (Cyril Stewart becomes Chair in July), 3At-large board members, 5Elders, and 25Deacons). To be
eligible for Elder, one has to have been a member of Woodmontfor at least TWO years as of July 1, 2014 and a member forONE year to be eligible for deacon. In considering individualsto nominate, I encourage you to ask the following questions:1) Are they serious about their faith and their spiritual life?
2) Do they have a servant's heart and have they demonstrated
leadership ability? 3) Are they committed to the overall
well-being of Woodmont Christian Church and our mission?
4) Are they present on a regular basis in worship and in other
activities/ministries and do they support Woodmont with their
time, talent, and treasure? 5) Will they help move Woodmont
forward in the years to come? If you can answer "yes" to eachof these questions, then I highly encourage that you nominate
them for leadership in our church.
The following individuals have been approved by theWoodmont Board to serve on this year's nominating committeein accordance with the by-laws. They will begin meeting inFebruary. You can submit nominations directly to any of them
before the end of January.
The members of the 2014 Nominating Committee are:
Marcus Crider, Chair292-5868/[email protected]
Karen Conrad298-3735/[email protected]
Kasey Clymer218-6634/[email protected]
Polly Keith953-2700/[email protected]
Mary Kiger414-8345/[email protected]
L.A. Galyon712-8676/[email protected]
Steve McHugh352-7669/[email protected]
Kathy Patten269-0539/[email protected]
Bryan Sargent832-8070/[email protected]
Rich Sanderson370-8524/[email protected]
The nominating committee has a very challenging tayear after year to arrive at a leadership slate based on tnominations and input from the congregation and to th
present that slate to the Board and congregation for finapproval. We are blessed here at Woodmont to have manmany capable leaders but only a limited number of spots fill. I have described our church before as having "More Chiethan Indians." The nominating process works best when tentire congregation participates and gives input. I want thank Marcus and those who have agreed to serve on thcommittee. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers the weeks ahead. The nominating slate will be presented to tBoard in March for initial approval and then will go before tcongregation later in the spring. Final approval comes at tcongregational meeting in June. The new church year w
begin on July 1, 2014. Bill Gates once said, "As we look ahe
into the next century, leaders will be those who empowother." Albert Schweitzer once said, "Example is not the mathing in influencing others, it is the only thing."

Dear Woodmont,
As we stand on the precipice of a new year, how big is your brave?
I spent this Christmas and New Year's withmy family in the Teton Mountains ofWyoming. Skiing is one of my husband andhis family's greatest joys. Not only is theirhouse a stone's throw from the slopes, butthey have everything you would ever need tohit the slopes, Lindsey Vonn style. I remindyou, I'm a Carolina girl. Our fun is collectingangel wings on a good, flat sandy beachthat stretches for miles, far from moguls, freezing temperatures, and steep mountains.
For the first couple of mornings, I gracefullymaneuvered my way out of joining thefamily ski. I snow-shoed, cross-countryskied and practiced yoga. Pure bliss. But Iknew the reckoning was coming. Whodoesn't ski when the clouds drop an earlyChristmas gift of six inches of snow on the
mountain? Perfect conditions, right? That'swhat everyone kept assuring me as I floatedup into the heavens in a car that dangledfrom a wire. I should have been praisingMother Nature for her exquisite pure whiteChristmas gown that draped the face of theMountain, but all I could do was look down
at my gloves and tremble in my ski boots. One of my greatest flaws is my need to be incontrol of my destiny. But when you findyourself up 12,000 feet on a mountaintop, flirting with the hem of the heavens, andyour skis are literally hanging off the edge, watch out! Thankfully, my kind husbandside-stepped his skis back up to me. All hesaid was, follow me, I will get you down thismountain.
We have no idea how the drama of our liveswill unfold over this next year. There is nocrystal ball, tarot card, or palm reader thatcan predict or prepare us for what lies ahead.Life is unpredictable, fragile, treacherous, glorious, brutal, and beautiful. There is noavoiding the deep sorrows or the great joysthat are ahead. To wear the holy vestmentsof flesh and bone requires enormousbravery.
The plot of the human story is a life-loseries of exiles and exoduses. With mupomp and ceremony, we trust our livesthe mystery and the benevolence of GoBut then in the very next breath, when ohearts clutch in fear, we snatch back contwith a death grip. What a great comedy
or tragedy to think we can ski down mountain on our own accord, without Gtenderly and patiently leading the way.
We must learn how to ski forward knowwithout knowing the path ahead. Braverequires surrender.
And God said, "Follow me. I will not leayou until I have done what I have promisyou."

How Big is Your Brave?by Farrell Mason,Minister of Family Life & Pastoral Care
Fashion Policeby Stephen Daniel King, Creative Director for "The Bridge"
My friend and I recently witnessed a manget arrested in the bathroom at a coffeeshop. Confused by the apparent immediacyof the whole scene, we joked that becausethe college students were away for the week, the Vanderbilt police had to be getting prettyrestless. We pondered as to when theystarted acting as the fashion police, as thearrestee was wearing leopard print pajamabottoms at lunch time. But perhaps therough looking man had just robbed a bank.Or let open all the cages at the zoo. Ormaybe he stole a sandwich from the cafe
down the street! We quipped and createdvarious scenarios in our heads as we
watched the focused cops clean up the crimescene.
Once the criminal was in the car, and ourstories ceased to be imaginative, we finishedour lattes and said our see-ya-laters. Asecurity guard had entered the coffee shopand I overheard him saying something abouthow the man was caught shoplifting and hadfled the scene. So I shrugged off the zooscenario and finished packing up my laptop. The guard then went on to say that the thiefwas homeless and had been a nuisance in
the past. I began to feel a bit guilty of ourmusings as I checked the weather on my
smartphone. 16 degrees. 40% chance afternoon precipitation. Weather Alert Davidson County. I looked up as the ccar was driving away. Well, maybe hhave a warm place to stay tonight?
The coast was now clear, so I threw my caway and walked toward the bathroomopened the bathroom door, and on tground in front of me was a half-eatsandwich from the cafe down the street.
