    Blessings,

    Commitment Sunday is This Sunday

This Sunday, April 28th is CommitmentSunday and will bring our spring stewardship campaign"Generations of Generosity" to a close. I am grateful to Jay and

Meredith Hollomon for all the work they have done in leadingthis campaign. If you have already made a commitment tosupport the mission and ministry of Woodmont for another year, thank you! I have always believed that the church should do abetter job of saying "thank you" more often. Every year, wecount on the generosity and sacrifice of our members to fund theoperating budget and we ask for commitments so that we canresponsibly set the new budget that will begin July 1,2013.

At Woodmont, we are committed to our mission of "GrowingDisciples of Christ by Seeking God, Sharing Love, and ServingOthers." Everything we do here falls under the umbrella of ourmission statement. This summer, we will celebrate our church's

70th anniversary which is a great milestone and is veryexciting. It will be a time to look back and reflect as well asa time to look ahead to the future. We will remember ourrich history and remain hopeful for the future that is yet tobe. Megan and I give sacrificially to this church because webelieve in the mission and the ministries. We believe thatlives are changed on a regular basis inside and outside of ourwalls. We believe that the best dollars we can spend as a familygo directly to this church to keep it moving forward.

It has always been true that churches need money to functionand operate. Woodmont is certainly no exception. It's also true

that generosity is a statement of faith and will change our ownlives by helping us to grow spiritually. In the Sermon on theMount, Jesus did say, "Where your treasure is, there your heartwill be also." (Matt 6:21) When we commit our time andtreasure to something, we are saying that we believe in it. Pleaseconsider making a commitment this week to support the churchfor another year. Know that your contributions will be usedresponsibly to change lives and to continue moving Woodmontforward. Thank you for your generosity. Thank you for makingministry possible. Thank you for being an important part of ourchurch family!

    Summer Staff Transitions

This Summer, we are making some changes within our staffstructure here at Woodmont. These transitions will take placeduring the months of J une and July. All of our staff members arestaying on board, but we will be restructuring some areas ofresponsibility. A lot of prayer and thought has gone into thesechanges by our leadership. I am excited about the changes andso are the staff members who are involved. Here is a synopsis ofwhat will take place.

Trey Flowers will be moving up to worwith our youth ministries, specifically our CY(9-12th grade). Trey will still be giving oversighto our children's ministries but we are basicalexpanding the scope of his responsibility t

include CYF. Carla Schooler will continue twork with our Jr. High youth (6-8th grade) and Trey will havadequate support in the children's ministry from other ministeand from some new interns that will be coming on board. Trewill continue to cast vision for our children's ministry whichas grown dramatically in recent years. Keep in mind, Trealready has relationships with many of the youth and thefamilies from their days in the children's ministry.

Thom Schuyler will be transitioning fromyouth ministry to become Woodmont's Directofor College and Young Adult ministry. Thowill work with the twenties and thirties aggroup which includes college students, younprofessionals, and young couples. Naturally, h

will help with pastoral care issues of this age group. Keep imind, Thom already has strong relationships with many of ouyoung adults from their days in our youth ministry. I think thwill be a natural progression for Thom.

J ustin Gung will be transitioning out of thyoung adult minister role and will focus morof his time and energy on children and familieas well as congregational care and spirituaformation. Since he came to Woodmont, Just

has had a very broad job description. This wnarrow his focus and give us the additional energy we neein our children's and family ministry as well as in areas ocongregational care. Farrell Mason is now back from maternitleave and will continue her work in pastoral care but keep mind she is part time (and the busy mother of five children).

These transitions will take place over the course of a fmonths (June and July). The staff will fulfill the commitmeand plans that they already have in their current roles for tsummer mission trips, camps, VBS, etc. The transition will complete by August 1st. On April 14th, I talked about hchange is not always easy in life but it is very healthy. I belie

these changes will give new energy, vision, and momentumeach of these areas. Please keep Trey, Thom, Justin and theimportant ministries in your prayers in the coming weeks.

    There Is Love.

It seems that in thelast several months our world has beenmarred by tragedy. I found it hard to focus

following the bombings at the BostonMarathon. I do short distance races myselfand have close friends that are longerdistance runners. I have stood at afinish line many times with great hope, expectation and life giving joy that comeswith accomplishing a daunting task. Icannot imagine the pain of Mondayafternoon.

I tried to focus on work or menialtasks. I was stopped by an overwhelming,all-consuming pain that seemed to have

seeped into my very core. A stake planteddeep in my soul. The pain seemed todiminish a bit if I sat very still anddistracted myself with music or words oremail or twitter. But soon it would returnand the question would rise

"What is wrong with our world?"

What brokenness drives one person toharm another? How much pain must youfeel to murder innocents? How miserableare you if you can open fire on children? How very lost are you if you choose totake lives at the end of something as lifegiving as finishing a marathon?

I believe people are good and I havedecided to find that good in everyone Imeet. This is not always an easy task but I

believe it a worthy task. And I believegood can always be found. However, afternights spent watching a school destroyed,or a finish line forever mauled by pain, finding the good is difficult.

Then it happened. It always does.

I saw the ones running into the smoke.I saw the ones carrying strangers out. Iheard that marathoners didn't stop at mile26 but ran on...on to give blood whenthey were already weakened by fatigue, exhaustion and utter fear.

THERE IS GOOD. THERE IS LOVE.

I leave you with the lyrics from this songthat I played all day last Tuesday.

After the Last Tear Falls:Andrew Peterson

After the last tear fallsAfter the last secret's toldAfter the last bullet tears through flesh

and boneAfter the last child starvesAnd the last girl walks the boulevardAfter the last year that's just too hard

After the last tear fallsThere is love.Love, love, love.

    There is love.Love, love, love.

After the last disgraceAfter the last lie to save some faceAfter the last brutal jab from a poison

    tongueAfter the last dirty politician

After the last meal down at the missionAfter the last lonely night in prison

    There is loveLove, love, love

    There is loveLove, love, love

    There is love

And in the end, the end isOceans and oceansOf love and love againWe'll see how the tears that have fallen

Were caught in the palmsOf the Giver of love and the Lover of alAnd we'll look back on these tears as ol

    tales

'Cause after the last plan failsAfter the last siren wailsAfter the last young husband sails off tojoin the war

After the last "this marriage is over"After the last young girl's innocence is

stolenAfter the last years of silence that won't

    a heart open

    A Word About Stephen Ministry

Where did Stephen Ministry get its name? From the Bible of course! Stephen wasone of the seven deacons chosen by thedisciples to care for the widows andneedy so that classifies him as one of thevery first Christian lay caregivers. Today

over 11,000 congregations have built aStephen Ministry team to follow the example ofStephen by caring for those among them who arehurting. Since 2010 Woodmont has commissionedseven Stephen Leaders and twenty-one StephenMinisters who have received fifty plus hours of trainingand provided over a thousand hours of care giving toindividual members of our congregation.

Life can become chaotic and uncertain at the blink ofan eye. We believe that God is good and that He is incontrol, but bad things still happen to us and those we

love. Isn't it a comfort to know that there are peoplewho care enough for us to listen and pray without

judgment or condemnation while our deep fears, anxieties, and concerns are present? While thosepeople cannot fix or change our circumstances, theycan be faithful, confidential, Christian companionsduring difficult times.

If life circumstances have thrown you a curve, pleasedo not hesitate to reach out to see if a StephenMinister could help. Kathy Patten (838-4957) would behappy to meet with you to further discuss the ministry.
