SPIN 1/2 PARTICLEStern-Gerlach experiment
The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground stateparamagnetic atoms (silver) in inhomogeneous magnetic field:
A silver atom emitted from high temperature furnace E and collimated by F is de-flected by the gradient of the magnetic field created by an electromagnet A and thencondenses at N on plate P.

Result expected from classical mechanics
Silver atoms are neutral but possess a permanent magnetic momentM which comesfrom their intrinsic angular momentum, or spin S
M = γSThis interacts with the magnetic field B leading to the potential
W = −M . Band thus also the force
F = ∇ (M . B) =Mz ∇Bz =M∂Bz∂z
Since the magnetic moments of the emitted silver atoms are distributed ran-domly in all directions in space, classical mechanics predicts that a measure-ment ofMz can yield with equal probability all values included between ± |M|.

Results of the Stern-Gerlach experiment contradict classical prediction
If we measure the component Sz of the intrinsic angular momentum of a silver atomin its ground state, we can find only one or the other of two values, corresponding tothe deflections HN1 and HN2.
We have to reject the classical picture and have to conclude that:
Sz is a quantized physical quantity whose discrete spectrum includes only twoeigenvalues, +2 and −2.

To prepare one of the eigenstates of S x, for example, we must select, after a mea-surement of S x, the atoms for which this measurement has yielded the correspondingeigenvalue.
By placing the Stern-Gerlach apparatus so that the axis of the magnetic field is par-allel to an arbitrary unit vector u and piercing the plate either at N1 or at N2, we canprepare silver atoms in the spin state |+u or |−u respectively.

CHAPTER 3: ELECTRON SPIN
(From Cohen-Tannoudji, Chapter IX)
Spin is an intrinsic property of quantum particles which comes naturally out of rela-tivistic description of particles and specifically from the structure of the Lorentz group.
Spin of electron can be incorporated into non-relativistic quantum mechanics throughthe addition of several postulates. This is known as Pauli theory of electron spin.
Pauli theory will allows us to incorporate relativistic corrections (relativistic kinemat-ics, magnetic effects) into our theory of the hydrogen atom.
![Page 26: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
A. INTRODUCTION OF ELECTRON SPIN1. Experimental evidencea. FINE STRUCTURE OF SPECTRAL LINES
Each spectral line is made of several distinguishable components having nearly iden-tical frequencies. This structure comes from relativistic effects related to interactionbetween the various angular momenta of constituent particles of an atom.
![Page 27: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
b. ANOMALOUS ZEEMAN EFFECT
In a uniform magnetic field, each of the spectral lines, i.e. each component of the finestructure, of an atom, splits into a certain number of equidistant lines. This is calledthe Zeeman effect. The theory predicts the magnetic moment to be proportional tothe orbital angular momentum
M =µBL (3.1)
where µB is the Bohr magneton
µB =q
2me
(3.2)
This theory of the Zeeman effect is confirmed in some experiments (”normal” Zee-man effect) but it is contradicted in other ones (”anomalous”). For example, for hy-drogen and the atoms with odd atomic number Z, the energy levels are divided intoan even number of Zeeman sub-levels though it should be an odd number (2l + 1).
![Page 28: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
C. EXISTENCE OF HALF-INTEGRAL ANGULAR MOMENTA
In the Stern-Gerlach experiment, the ground state neutral atoms are deflected by aperpendicular magnetic field according to their value of spin. For example Ag atomsare deflected in such a way that they split symmetrically into two beams. This shows,as through 2s+1=2, that the atoms have only two possible values of the magneticquantum number mz = ±1
2 and are characterized by the azimuthal quantum numbers = 1
2 in this case.
![Page 29: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
2. Quantum description: postulates of the Pauli theory
Uhlenbeck and Goudsmit hypothesis (1925)
electron ”spins” and that gives it an intrinsic angular momentum called spin. To inter-pret the experimental observations, we assume the magnetic moment is associatedwith the spin angular momentum
MS = 2µBS (3.3)
where the spin gyromagnetic ratio is twice the orbital gyromagnetic ratio.
Pauli stated this hypothesis more precisely and formulated description of spin in anon-relativistic limit.
![Page 30: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Spin postulates:
(i) The spin is characterized by the spin operator S which is an angular momentum,that is, it satisfies the angular momentum commutation relations
S x, S y
= iS z (3.4)
S y, S z
= iS x (3.5)
S z, S x
= iS y (3.6)
![Page 31: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)
(ii) S acts in a new space, spin state space Es where S2 and S z constitute C.S.C.O.
The space Es is spanned by eigenvectors of S2 and S z (and is (2s+ 1) dimensional):
S2|s,m = s(s + 1)2|s,m (3.7)
S z|s,m = m|s,m (3.8)
From general theory of angular momentum we know that s is either integral or half-integral and m = s, s − 1, ...,−s + 1,−s.
A particle characterized by a unique value of s is said to have spin s.
![Page 32: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/32.jpg)
(iii) The state space of the particle E represents both the orbital and spin angularmomentum d.o.f. and since all the spin observables commute with all orbital observ-ables, the state space factorizes into a tensor product as follows
E = Er ⊗ Es (3.9)
C.S.C.O. of the whole system consists of the spin C.S.C.O. (whose eigenvectorsspan Es), and the orbital C.S.C.O. (Er). For example, E is spanned by {|x, y, z, s,m}.
![Page 33: SPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experimentSPIN 1/2 PARTICLE Stern-Gerlach experiment The experiment consists of studying the deflection of a beam of neutral ground state paramagnetic](https://reader030.fdocuments.us/reader030/viewer/2022040101/5ec1bb31e9d774687a132a88/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
The electron is a spin-1/2 particle (s = 1/2) and its intrinsic magnetic moment isgiven by
MS = 2µBS (3.10)
Es is two-dimensional with the standard basis vectors |12,+12 and |12,−
12.
Remarks:Proton and neutron are also spin-1/2 particles but with a different gyromagnetic ra-tios.
Spin has no classical analog.
