` A player approaches the ball using basic four (orthree) step approach to generate high forward speed.A player redirects that speed into the upward energyby jumping up to the air. Created speed, arm action of

the jump and powerful jump are important factors inlifting the player up.

On the top of the reach player performs an arm swingand uses her middle body power to add power to her

swing. She swings the ball over the net to desiredtarget by hitting the ball with the palm of her hand.

` A spike is usually performed on the third contact

after the setter, the playmaker of your team has

set up the ball. The purpose of spike is to score a

point for your team and finish the ongoing rally, orat least to make other teams playmaking as

difficult as possible. A spike could be also called a

hit, a swing or a shot.

` A spike is a very complex skill and it takes a lot of

patience and perseverance to master in it. A

    volleyball spike requires quickness, agility,

explosive power, strength, hand-eye coordinationand whole- body coordination.

    1. Stretch your arms and legs for10-20 seconds

each before starting. This will reduce your risk of

pulling a muscle or injuring yourself

    2. Position yourself behind the 10-foot line (attack

line), whichis the line thatis about 4 feet away

from the net. If you have long legs or take bigger

steps, stand a little farther back. If you are left

handed, you may want to spike on the right side of

the court, and on the left if you are right handed. Ifyou are tall or can jump higher, try the middle.

    3. Watchthe setter. If you are playing outside (left)

hitter, call "Outside, outside" and similarly if you aremiddle or back (also called weak side because it's

the setter's weak side). Many teams come up with

codes for each side, so use them if yours does. If

your team uses numbers for the sets, make sure

you call the right number.4. Startyour approach afterthe ball is set. If you are

right-handed, your approach should be "Left foot,

right foot-left foot, jump" and vice versa if you are

left-handed. The last two steps should place yourfeet at somewhat of a 45-degree angle from the net.

    5. Prepare to jump. As you take the last two steps, extend your arms downwards and backwards and

bend your knees.6. Jump right before you reachthe ball. Keep in

mind you want to jump a little bit forward to be ableto hit the ball harder. You want to make contact withthe ball in front of you, not directly overhead. Keepyour eye on the ball, and leap up, swinging yourarms up in front of you (it will help you jump higher, but be careful to not contact the net for it results in apenalty). Try to get an arch in your back which willprovide more power. Use your arms to get yourselfhigher above the net useing a swinging motion

    7. Prepare to hitthe ball. As you're in the air, point to the ball with your weak hand, and pullyour hitting hand back so that the back of yourhand is right next to your ear--just as if you'repulling a bow and arrow. You should use yourweak hand as a guide for your hit.

    8. Extend yourhitting hand straight out aboveyou, and hitthe ball, contacting the upperhalf ofthe ball withthe heel ofyour openhand atthe verytop ofyour swing. Again, the

contact point should always be in front of yourhead, not above it.

` If you are a middle player and are being set a short set close to the net (called a"B" or a "2" by some teams), you will need to start your approach before the ball is

set.` You don't always have to spike the ball on an attack shot. A well-placed dink (a

soft shot to an uncovered part of the court), wipe (a light touch to hit the ball intothe opposing player's block and to the ground), or shoot set (a long flat set to anuncovered part of the court) can catch your opponents by surprise and win youthe point.

` When jumping, the more you swing your arms back and then up, the higher you

will be able to jump. This is due to your momentum.` If you're having problems hitting the ball down, do exercises to increase your

vertical leap so that you can jump high enough to "get on top" of the ball.

` For the ball to go down you must have topspin, and in order to get topspin youmust flick your wrist when hitting the ball. Practice hitting the ball against a walland flicking your wrist forward.

` You may want to work on your abdominal muscles before you learn to spike-strong abs help you hit harder! Use all your might and strength!

` When you are jumping jump straight up not towards the net

` The most commonly used hitting approach is: Left, Right, Left, Jump, Spike!Remember to think of a rhythm for your steps, as it helps you get familiar with theapproach.

` Another way to do your approach is to right, and then left, right...then on your 3rdsteps bring your arms back and jump up to hit.

    `

` Don't allow your hand or arm to cross over the net during a spike--this isa fault.

` Keep in mind that in organized competitive volleyball there are manyrules governing who may spike the ball and how. Check yourorganization's rules, and make sure you understand them.

` Contact the ball with your entire hand, in effect "slapping" it. This willallow you to have greater control over where the ball goes. Additionally,it will add topspin to the ball which will make the ball travel to the ground

quiker. It will also make a loud slapping sound.` When spiking, DO NOT jump too early. If you do, you will be too high in

the air while the ball is too low. If this happens, set or tip it over. Trying tospike it will only make it hit the net.

` There are many, many different types of approaches; and the one yourcoach teaches may be different from the approach explained above.

` Always stretch before doing any vigorous physical exercise to prevent

    serious injury.

-The volleyball block is a skill that looks simple. You just jump straight up with arms outstretchedin front of the hitter, right?

-In reality, there is a lot more to good blockingthan just throwing your hands up.

` Stand with your hips and shoulders square to the net.

Your feet should be slightly wider than shoulder-width

apart. Bend your knees slightly so you can move

    quickly in either direction.

` Hold your arms up, elbows out, palms facing the net at

about eye level. Keep your hands here whenever the

ball is on the other side because it can cross the net at

any time. You need to be ready whether it crosses

accidentally, if their setter dumps the ball onto yourside or if a hitter attacks it.

  • 8/6/2019 Spiking and Blocking

    15/23

` Before you can block the ball, you need to get

your body in front of the hitter as efficiently as

possible. You need to travel along the net in

position to jump quickly and block. To accomplishthis, there are two footwork patterns to choose

from the side step and the crossover step.

  • 8/6/2019 Spiking and Blocking

    16/23

Side StepIf the hitter is within 3-5 feet of you, use a side step to put

yourself in position directly in front of her hitting shoulder.

    - Take one step with the foot closest to the hitter and then bringyour other foot over so they are once again about shoulder-widthapart.

    - As you move, keep your hips and shoulders square to the net.

    - It may take you more than one side step to get yourself in front ofthe hitter, but if it takes more than two, think about using acrossover step instead.

    17/23

CrossoverStepTo cover more ground, use a crossover step. Think of it as a

Step Cross Step.- Take one big side step with the leg closest to the hitter.

    - Cross your other leg in front of your body while still keeping yourshoulders as square to the net as possible. Your hips willmomentarily be angled toward the hitter.

    - Take one more step with the first leg, squaring your hips with thenet once again.

    - Plant your feet in front of the hitter and jump straight up (nodrifting.)

    18/23

` Strong Hands When you jump, spread your fingers, push your armsup over your head about shoulder-width apart and push with yourshoulders. Think about trying to bring your shoulders to your ears. Dropyour head to reach further over, but keep your eyes up on the hitter.

` Penetrate Shoot your arms as far over onto the opponents side of

the net as possible this is called penetrating the net. Leave as littlespace between your arms and the top of the tape as possible withouttouching the net. Do not allow the ball to get between you and your sideof the net.

` Turn Outside Arm In If you are blocking on the outsides of the court, keep your inside arm and hand flat, but angle your outside hand and

forearm into the court. This way, if the ball hits that arm it will bounce offof you and back into the court, not outside the lines.

In first picture the left side blocker (in the

picture, the player on the right) is placing

hands "around the ball". The blocker's left

    hand is turned "inside"

  • 8/6/2019 Spiking and Blocking

    20/23

The second picture may exaggerate, but

in blocking you try to "grab" the ball -your goal is to place the hands "around

the ball". Pay special attention to the

right hand, the blocker's hands are not

    just "a flat surface".

  • 8/6/2019 Spiking and Blocking

    21/23

The third picture is NOT the bestexample of a block. Hands form a "flat

surface", which means you really can't

direct the ball to the desired direction.

The hands are also too wide apart, the

ball could travel between the hands,

    "through the thumbs
