PANELS, KEYNOTES, AND SPECIAL EVENTS

TUESDAYThe Need for Speed: Next Generation High Speed Infrared Detector TechnologiesTuesday 11 April 2017 • 1:00 to 1:30 PM Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition Hall (Level 1)

SPEAKER: Chris Bainter Global Business Development Director Premium Business Segment, FLIR

For many years, high-speed visible cameras offered the ability to stop motion on fast-moving objects and provided unique insight through slow-motion playback for high-speed

applications, such as airbag testing, munitions and ballistics testing, and brake & rotor testing applications. Unfortunately, the thermal infrared (IR) camera counterparts didn’t offer the snapshot speeds, high frame rates, and wide temperature measurement ranges necessary to be useful for these same testing applications.

But with next-generation high-speed infrared read-out integrating circuits (ROIC) and new strain layer superlattice (SLS) detector materials, there are finally Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) infrared camera solutions that can provide the much-needed speed and dynamic range to meet the challenges of high-speed thermal testing application.

This interactive presentation will discuss the benefits of these next-gener-ation ROIC and detector material technologies and how they are pushing the boundaries on high-speed thermal testing capabilities. SPONSORED BY:

High-Speed Imaging: Today’s Possibilities and Future DirectionsWednesday 12 April 2017 • 1:30 to 2:00 PM Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition Hall (Level 1)

New motion analysis technology makes it possible to analyze high-speed events like never before. Resolution, frames-per-second, and affordability have improved so much in the last two years that a high-speed cameras and slow motion can be useful for both common and complex scientific and engineering problems. Reliable cameras and advancements in image processing enable speeds of one thousand frames a second, or one million frames per second, enabling a whole new way to analyze small details during very fast events. Ballistics, particle distribution, materials processing, shock wave analysis, crash/impact analysis, microscopy, manufacturing, combus-tion cycles, and other potential uses are generating valuable information never been seen before.

In this talk you will see current possibilities, insight about what others are doing now, and a look into the future of high-speed imaging.

Precision Patterns on Precision OpticsWednesday 12 April 2017 • 2:00 to 2:30 PM Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition Hall (Level 1)

Precision patterns are widespread, from photolithography for IC’s and displays - to placing the double yellow line in the middle of the road; from newspaper printing to skywriting. The ability of the engineer to effectively design the patterns for maximum utility and minimum cost are keys to successful implementation.

FLIR’s capability to place precise patterns on optical surfaces provides system designers more choices for targeting, bore-sighting, heaters, EMI suppression, signal filtering and other applications where precision optics are needed and patterning may provide an effective solution. Weapon sight reticle patterns remain important to the sportsman and the soldier. Crosshair options for tactical and long range targeting are boundless. FLIR’s patterning capabilities allow us to produce micron and sub-micron features on and in optical surfaces, but is this what is needed?

We will take a look at some rules of thumb for precision patterns, both for utility and for cost.

SMALLSATS: The Next Big ThingWednesday 12 April 2017 • 2:30 to 3:30 PM Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition Hall (Level 1)

Small satellites, CubeSats, and Nanosats are advancing rapidly as new platforms used in constellations, swarms, or disaggregated systems. These small platforms are game-changers for remote sensing that will advance scientific knowledge, reduce the cost of new missions, and expand access to space using devices that range from the size of a loaf of bread to the size of a washing machine. With infrared detectors, spectrometers, and high-resolution cameras looking down at the Earth or up into deep space, this is an area ripe for R&D and collaboration among industry, government, and academia. Earth observation applications span weather forecasting, hurricane and tropical storm analysis and prediction, monitoring climate change, and studying natural disasters.

Come hear about the emerging opportunities, key drivers and motivations, and technical challenges from optics and sensors to data processing and communications that remain to be answered – and how you may get in-volved with programs creating a new paradigm for remote sensing.

LiDAR for Autonomous Vehicles: The future of 3D Sensing and PerceptionWednesday 12 April 2017 • 4:00 to 4:30 PM Location: Industry Stage, Exhibition Hall (Level 1)

Solid-state LiDAR systems are key enabling technology for self-driving vehicles, 3D mapping, and industrial automation. Until recently LiDAR systems were too bulky, expensive, and with too many moving parts. Commercial advancements have made sophisticated mapping, object detection, classification, and tracking possible with small sensors that will become ubiquitous, particularly as they enable autonomous vehicles or “self-driving cars”. The magnitude of the market opportunity has been recognized by venture capitalists who have poured investment into this area, and recently valued Quanergy at over $1.5 billion—making this field the hottest market in photonics.

What vision has generated so much excitement in this area? What role do lasers, sensors, cameras, and data management play? What technical and societal challenges and opportunities emerge in this photonics-enabled future?
