A second-half penalty from on-loan Liverpool forward Fabio Borini gave the home side victory at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday and condemned United to three consecutive defeats for the first time in 13 years. United had lost by the same scoreline at home to Tottenham and Swansea in the past week. Cooler Cup dates preferred THE 2022 World Cup in Qatar will not be held in June- July and would best be held in the northern hemisphere winter, FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said yesterday. The scheduling of the event has been hotly debated ever since it was controversially awarded to Qatar in December 2010, especially over fears that the summer heat would be dangerous for players and fans. ‘‘I think it will be held between November 15 and January 15,’’ Valcke said. The Reds carpet for Griffiths ADELAIDE United have bolstered their attacking ranks with the signature of Ryan Griffiths for the remainder of the A-League season. The former Newcastle Jets forward recently returned to Australia after a season with Chinese club Beijing Boxy and his deal with the Reds is pending a medical clearance from the club. Griffiths, 32, scored 19 goals for the Jets across 2011-13. He is expected to be available for Adelaide’s clash with Brisbane Roar on Saturday. Spider scores a mark on Seb FOOTBALL By GREY MORRIS Nightcliff’s Seb Guilhaus is in an Adelaide hospital after a spider bite Picture: ELISE DERWIN I’ve got a third nostril now and there’s a big hole in my face and I’m still pretty sore NIGHTCLIFF ruckman Seb Guilhaus’ superb debut NTFL season has been halted by a spider bite. The 198cm former Central Districts big man was help- ing a mate renovate a house in Adelaide when he was bitten on the nose by what he suspects was a wolf spider. ‘‘I didn’t notice it immedi- ately and only became aware of it later on,’’ he said from his hospital bed last night. ‘‘I’ve got a third nostril now and there’s a big hole in my face and I’m still pretty sore. ‘‘I’ll be out on Friday and will have to wait another few days to heal properly.’’ Guilhaus is preparing to be dubbed ‘‘Spider’’ when he does return to the ruck for the Tigers. ‘‘Spider Man or Spider Guilhaus, it will come and I’m ready for it,’’ he laughed. ‘‘Actually it was pretty ser- ious. I was bitten two weeks ago and didn’t get to hospital until last Saturday when it gradually got worse. It’s slowed my reaction time down a fair bit and I’ve been swatting imaginary flies and doing push-ups in a bid to get myself right.’’ He has gone through a series of antibiotics in a bid to rid himself of the spider- bite infection. ‘‘We reckon we’ve found the right ones now so hope- fully I’m ready to go,’’ he said. Guilhaus expects to be back in the Nightcliff side for the Round 15 game against the Tiwi Bombers. ‘‘Obviously I’ll miss this week’s game against Wan- derers which is a shame, be- cause it’s a big one for us,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m a chance the following week against Southern Districts, but more than likely it will be the Tiwis in a fortnight.’’ Aaron Cornelius, Brant Chambers and Julian Lock- wood are expected to return to the Tiger lineup for Sunday’s game. Optimistic Bombers pin finals hopes on upset results FOOTBALL By GREY MORRIS NTFL — ROUND 13 Saturday: St Marys v Palmerston at TIO Stadium (3.15pm), Tiwi Bombers v Darwin at TIO Stadium (5.30pm), Southern Districts v Waratahs at Gardens Oval (4pm). Sunday: Nightcliff v Wanderers at BM Insurance Oval (4pm). THE Tiwi Bombers still believe they can play finals football. Grand finalists in the past two seasons and premiers in 2011-12, the Bombers have struggled for consistency this campaign and are eight points outside the top five. ‘‘We’re still a chance and in our situation you try and take whatever you can,’’ joint Tiwi coach Cameron Hotton said. ‘‘Looking at the draw, we’re eight points out of the five but if things go to plan and Tahs lose the games you expect them to against Night- cliff and Saints, there is an opening there for us if we can start winning matches.’’ Hotton said his team’s fin- als fate ‘‘probably’’ rests on who loses Saturday’s clash at Gardens Oval between Wara- tahs and Districts. ‘‘If Tahs get up, we’re prob- ably no chance of catching them, but if Districts win we’re only a game and a half behind them,’’ he said. Yuendumu star Liam Jur- rah is a chance to resume against the Buffaloes on Sat- urday if he can satisfy the club’s hierarchy is he is right to return. Hotton said the pre- Christmas competition had stepped up a bit from pre- vious years and the Bombers were grounded without their usual fly-in, fly-out players. ‘‘Even so, we gave a lot of our young guys a run and really weren’t that far away,’’ he said. ‘‘We got belted by the top three when Saints, Wan- derers and Nightcliff gave us a touch up, but there were a couple we should have won. ‘‘That includes last week against Districts when we thought we’d done enough late in the game and took our foot off the pedal a bit. We lost to Tahs by a couple of points before Christmas (and) that has come back to hurt us.’’ Hotton agreed with pop- ular sentiment that pointed to the loss of 400-plus games with Simon Munkara, Ed- ward Darcy and Ephrem Tip- ungwuti out of the side. ‘‘Having Simon in the team would be great, but he decided he’d had enough at the start of the season,’’ Hotton said. Umpires boss denies revolt RUMOURS of an NTFL umpiring revolt have been squashed by umpiring man- ager Mark Noonan. The NT News received an email yesterday from an anonymous source, claiming he was an officiating umpire. The text read: ‘‘I won’t be making myself available to umpire this weekend and I will be encouraging my fellow umpires to do the same. An umpire of Darwin.’’ Noonan denied any know- ledge of the text or any mur- murings of discontent among his troops. Asked if the reason for the text had anything to do with the high-profile Daniel Mot- lop case, Noonan played down any logic behind such an ex- treme text. That included the origins of the email address that accom- panied the message. ‘‘That’s not one I know of,’’ he said. Motlop gets nine matches Colin Schwartz From Back Page The 31-year-old was handed eight weeks for a front-on charge Henry Labastida and an additional one week for striking John Anstess in the third quarter, which resulted in Motlop being sent from the field against St Marys. Wanderers have indicated they will not appeal the decis- ion. It is believed Motlop has already accumulated more than 10 suspensions across his AFL, SANFL, NTFL and River Murray Football League careers. Under AFL policy, once a player reaches 16 weeks of suspension they are automatically de- registered for 12 months be- fore given the chance to appeal, which is only granted under ‘‘exceptional cir- cumstances’’. AFLNT only have Motlop’s NTFL suspen- sions (five weeks) on record. The league is waiting for his tribunal records from oth- er state bodies before decid- ing on de-registration. But Motlop may avoid auto- matic de-registration given the policy states a player must be given a written warning if they are approaching the li- mit, which has not occurred. Regardless of the outcome, Wanderers club development manager Colin Schwartz said Motlop will bounce back big- ger and stronger. ‘‘Wanderers football are club are disappointed in the tribunal findings,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m sure that Daniel will apply himself very strongly in his next endeavour.’’
