Project Description

• Replaces current ocean cooling system with a compact system better suited for a shutdown plant with lower heat load

• Spent Fuel Pool Island (SFPI) involves installation of chillers, heat exchangers, pumps, and piping

• System in use until all spent fuel is moved to dry storage

Spent Fuel Cooling

Existing Spent Fuel Cooling System

• Complex system

• Requires ~ 20% of the operating plant systems

• Requires ocean cooling

Proposed Spent Fuel Pool Island

• Simple and compact

• Self-contained system

• Eliminates ocean cooling

• Reduces by 50% amount of ocean water needed

Requesting Coastal Commission approval of CDP for proposed project:

• No adverse environmental impact

• Proven, safe technology

• Facilitates timely decommissioning

• Results in cost savings for customers
