The Silent –e Rule
Drop the silent –e if the suffix begins with a vowel: care + ed = cared, like + ing =liking
Do not drop the –e if the suffix begins with a consonant: care + less = careless,
like + ly = likely

The Doubling Rule

If the stress (strong pronunciation) falls on the last syllable,andthe word ends in one vowel and one consonant (vc) then:double the final consonant if the suffix begins with a vowel (v).– Admít + ed = admitted– But not: ópen + ed = opened
