IDEA

The SpeedDream36TM is one of the most

advanced and innovative yacht design

concepts in sailing today. Some of the main

characteristics of the boat are:

1. A delta-shaped hull, almost triangular in

plan view, with a very narrow, wave-piercing

bow to reduce resistance and improve sea-

worthiness.

2. A moderately wide beam for enhanced

planing ability at high speeds.

3. Reduced hull volume and buoyancy to

lower drag and save weight.

4. Very high stability and sail carrying

capacity due to an innovative Extreme

Canting Telescoping KeelTM that

ultimately comes

out of the water to provide maximum

righting moment while completely elimi-

nating drag.

5. The use of a telescoping keel that retracts

to reduce draft while in harbor, and extends

while sailing to maximize righting moment

and sail carrying capability.

6. The use of stabilizing foils to further

improve stability and reduce drag by

partially offsetting boat weight.

7. The resulting stability is far superior

to current keel boats while requiring only

fraction of the ballast thereby significantly

reducing the total boat displacement.

8. The use of high-aspect, high-perfor-

mance sails that allow SpeedDream36TM to

sail at very close wind angles and through

a broad range of wind conditions.

The SpeedDream36 Ultimate Canting Telescoping KeelTM

consists of a hollow Upper Strut that can be canted up to

75 degrees taking the bulb out of the water at heel angles

greater thav 15 degrees. A retractable Lower Strut reduces draft

at the dock yet when extended maximizees Righting Moment while

sailing.

Electric motors that operate Upper Strut Canting Mechanism

and Lower Strut Linear Actuator could be used to recu-

perate energy and recharge the battery pack.

The entire keel assembly is removable for

ease of transportation.

The creative team behind the new Speed-

Dream36TM mines a vein of talent and

experience that covers three decades in the

sailing business. Their stories are as unique

as their creation and their partnership long

and enduring.

Vlad Murnikov and Brian Hancock first met

during a previous around-the-world voy-

age. Murnikov, the founder and driving force

behind Fazisi, the Soviet Unions only entry in

the prestigious Whitbread Round the World

race, was looking for the best international

sailors to race his boat. He hired Hancock and

a two-plus decade friendship was

forged.

They come from vastly different back-

grounds; Murnikov from Moscow’s well

educated, intellectual society that eventually

changed the Soviet Union forever, and Han-

cock from the hot plains of South Africa and

the untamed free spirit of a vastly different

country also undergoing change.

Murnikov brings the brilliance of a highly

trained engineer; Hancock the creative

drive to tell the story of SpeedDream36TM.

The driving principle behind Speed-

Dream36TM is speed; pure, unbridled

speed. Part of this creative innovation is a

whole new approach to racing, one that is

loosley based on the hugely successful

slalom ski racing. Since it’s impos-

sible for all the skiers to race

down the mountain at the

same time, they go in

pairs, at timed

i n t e r va l s ,

and the

person with the fastest time for the course

wins.

For SpeedDream36TM the boats will sail

two triangular courses crossing at the

leeward mark. The competing boats will set

off on two reaching legs and a single down-

wind leg before crossing onto the other race

course and repeating the pattern. If there

are more than two boats racing, a second

set of racers will take off at timed intervals.

Teams will race a number of timed races

each day with the times aggregated.

The team with the lowest times for all races

will be declared the winner.

It’s a simple concept intended to rein-

vigorate One Design Racing and to put

some of the sheer thrill and fun back into

sailing. Remember - Speed Thrills.
