Opus 2 and Rondo Sound Processor • Electrically identical • Different housing • Different microphone positions:

Opus 2: Rondo:

Materials and Methods (1) • Measurement of speech understanding in noise

– German adaptive sentence test (OLSA) – Comparing performance between

• Opus2 • Rondo

– 4 different spatial settings (Green: test sentences; red: noise): S0N0 S0NIL S0N180 S0NCL

Materials and Methods (1) • Experimental setting:

Materials and Methods (2)

• 12 experienced (> 1 year) Opus2 users – 7 women, 5 men – Age 25-73 (average 52.2 years) – 5 right, 7 left

• Same settings (Map, volume, and sensitivity) for Rondo and Opus 2

• Position of the Rondo-processor (angle θ) was measured using a laser-pointer

Positions further to the back gives poorer speech understanding in noise from the rear

Could this be improved?

• Directional multi-microphone noise reduction • Ongoing study:

– Sonnet audio processor with directionality (same manufacturer)

Sonnet (directional mode) vs. Opus 2 N=8 (ongoing study)

Conclusions • No significant differences between Rondo und Opus 2 for

– noise from the front or from either side – The 2 sound processors are basically identical

• Significant lower speech understanding with the Rondo for noise from the rear – 4.4 dB SNR, p<0.0001

• The further to the back, the poorer speech understanding with the Rondo in noise from rear

• Directional multi-microphones systems (such as in the Sonnet) may improve the situation
