Phonation and Articulation

Speech Production Processes

Phonation• Phonation is the rapid opening and closing of

the vocal folds for sound• The vocal folds lie horizontally in the larynx• they attach anteriorly to the thyroid cartilage and posteriorly to the

artynoid cartilages; they are free in the middle• the opening in the middle of the vocal folds is

the glottis

Phonation

• Vibrating mechanism through vocal folds oscillation.

• It is the process by which vocal folds open and close rapidly to produce certain sounds, especially speech, through periodic vibration.

Articulation

• Articulate

: (adj) divided into syllables or words meaningfully arranged

: (v) to give clear and effective utterance

:in phonetics and phonology, articulation is the movement of the tongue, lips, jaw, and other speech organs (the articulators) in order to make speech sounds.

Articulation

• Consonants can be described as sounds which are articulated with complete or partial inhibition

• Consonants are the place of articulation

• An obstruction is necessarily formed when two articulators come close together.

• One is moving (the active articulator), and the other is stationary (the passive articulator).

Bilabials (two lips together)

Labiodentals (upper lip-lower teeth)

Dentals (tounge between teeth)

Alveolars (tounge behind the back upper teeth)

Palatals (tounge rises up to the hard palate)

Velars (move your velum)

Glottal (use your glottil)
