Dr. Betina Hsieh is an assistant professor of Teacher Education at California State University, Long Beach. Her teacher education work is informed by 10 years of urban middle school classroom experience, K-12 literacy coaching and work as co-director of the Bay Area Writing Project. She has 3 single subject credentials (in English, Mathematics and Social Studies), a BA in American Studies with a focus on Childhood in America; an MA and PhD in Education from UC Berkeley, with a specialization in Language, Literacy and Culture. Her expertise includes: literacy and language development; classroom management; and curriculum development.

Betina Hsieh

QD Advisory Board

Dr. Gary Rybold’s first debate was in 1965. He has taught public speaking and debate at Irvine Valley College (IVC) in California since 1993. He coached IVC to 16 debate national championship titles. Professor Ryboldwas the first certified trainer of the International Debate Education Association to teach in China (2003). He has taken over 130 IVC students and coaches to China on academic debate tours and has trained over 7,000Chinese students in debate and public speaking. As a Fulbright-Hayes scholar, Professor Rybold researched debate as a developmental tool for English majors at Beijing Foreign Studies University in the People’s Republic of China. At the same university, he received a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics (2011) with a dissertation on pedagogy for developing oral communication and critical thinking skills in a second language.Professor Rybold has written two textbooks for a Chinese publisher:- College English Critical Thinking Course (3) co-authored with LinYan and Cui Linlin, (Beijing: FLTRP Press) 2016- Debating in English: A Critical Thinking Approach to EffectiveSpeaking (Beijing: FLTRP Press) 2010He has taught English professors from over 100 Chinese universities how to teach public speaking and debate.

Gary Rybold

Shaunté Caraballo is a two-time national collegiate Speech and Debate Champion, and a two-time high school state champion. She is an energetic speaker with over 10 years of experience in sales and relationship cultivation, more than 15 years of experience as a professional speaker, and over 14 years of experience in training and education for multiple age levels in the academic, corporate, and not-for-profit arena. She has coached Speech and Debate for Irvine Valley College, California Baptist University, and at Tennessee State University, where she served as the director for 4 years. She is currently a professor at Irvine Valley College and California Baptist University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts with an emphasis in Theatre and Speech and her Master of Fine Arts in Acting from California State University Long Beach. She is a native of southern California and loves to work with diverse student groups. In her free time she dances hula, travels, and enjoys volunteering.

Shaunte CaraballoLead Coach

Tim began debating as a freshman in high school in 2008 and went on to lead the team to numerous regional and national titles. In 2011 he joined the Chapman University Speech and Debate team, becoming president his freshman year studying Communication, Philosophy, and Computer Science. After 3 years of collegiate competition totaling 76 awards in Impromptu, Extemp, Duo, Prose, Informative, Com Analysis, and Parliamentary Debate, including 18 national awards and nine top-10 national finishes, he chose to step back from competing and coach the Chapman Team. He found his true passion teaching middle and high school students speech and debate skills.

Anna has a degree in Business Management and has started her career in speech & debate inToastmasters International. She has held numerous leadership positions such as DivisionGovernors. Her passion is in teaching Public Speaking & Leadership skills toYouth and haveinvolved in such programs for K-8 for 10+ years. In addition, she is a certified corporate trainerand knows how to deliver training programs for a wide range of audience.
