It was only on Tuesday morning thatshe found out that he had never arrived.

The Spanish consulate had turneddown their request for the relevantpapers, without specifying why, said arepresentative from the groups travelagent, Tanya Chuvilkina.

She said her staff had been waiting forthe arrival of the children at Barcelonaairport in the early hours of Tuesday.

The van was registered as theproperty of Urban Moving Systems.Police interrogated them for hours, and

transferred them to a maximum securityfacility. A raid on the Urban MovingSystems warehouse (whose owner, DominikSuter, has since fled to Israel) yieldedcomputers, documents, and otherevidenceof what?

Thats why a shiver of dj-vu passedthrough me as I watched the 20/20 newsreport. Listening to the New Jerseyhousewife who spotted the cheeringIsraelis from her highrise apartment,watching the baffled look on her face asshe described the young Israelis:

They were like happy, you know; theydidnt look shocked to me. I thought it wasvery strange.

It was like seeing a made-for-TV movieadaptation of a novel Id read many times.Familiar but strangely truncated in certainkey areas, abbreviated to conform to thesupposedly short attention span of itsaudience, and in true Hollywood style, notonly bowdlerized but completelyvulgarized. The result is a fairly interestingstory studded with nuggets of newinformation, and saddled with a tacked-onindeed, downright counterintuitivemoral at the end, as intoned by Baba Wawa:

Much of the ABC report confirms mybasic contention, and the contention ofmany others, that there was indeed, as FoxNews reporter Carl Cameron puts it, a vastIsraeli spy operation in the U.S. in fulloperational mode prior to 9/11, engaged inwatching the pro-Arab support networkthat operates in many major Americancities.

What the 20/20 report amounts to is theIsraelis second line of defense, whichbasically boils down to this: well, yeah,they were Israeli spies, but they were justhere defending Israels interests and had nopre-knowledge of 9/11. In the process ofspinning this new rationale, however, wehave a series of damning admissions, asspun by ABC terrorism expert VinceCannistraro, a former chief of operationsfor counterterrorism with the CIA.

The arrested mens names were found ina search of a national intelligencedatabase. We are also told byCannistraroas if we dont alreadyknowthat Urban Moving Systems wasprobably a Mossad front. Duh-uh! Gee, Iguess thats why, shortly after the copsraided their New Jersey office, the UrbanMovers got a move on, with ownerDominick Suter fleeing the country.

The purpose of this spy nest, we are toldin a reassuring tone, was launching anintelligence operation against radicalIslamists in the area, particularly in theNew Jersey/New York area.

but explanation up the flagpole in thehope that, awed by Cannistrarosexpertise and connections, everyone willsalute:

Under this scenario, the alleged spyingoperation was not aimed against the UnitedStates, but at penetrating or monitoringradical fund-raising and support networksin Muslim communities like Paterson, N.J.,which was one of the places where severalof the hijackers lived in the months prior toSept. 11.

The problem with this fallback story isthat penetrating or monitoring New JerseyMuslims and having foreknowledge of 9/11 are not mutually exclusive. Indeed,such surveillanceto the degree it wassuccessfulwould have increased thelikelihood that the Israelis would gainsome knowledge of the 9/11 plot. If not allthe details, at least a strong indication that9/11 was bound to be a special dayonethey would celebrate, shamelessly andcarelessly, in full sight of others, unable torestrain their joy at the sight of the WTCemitting a black cloud over Manhattan.

A September 14 New York Times round-up of the nationwide investigation into theterrorist attacks seemed to imply not justforeknowledge, in the case of the 5 Israelis,but some form of collaboration:

For the FBI, deciphering the truth fromthe five Israelis proved to be difficult. Oneof them, Paul Kurzberg, refused to take alie-detector test for 10 weeksthen failedit, according to his lawyer. Another of hislawyers told us Kurzberg had beenreluctant to take the test because he hadonce worked for Israeli intelligence inanother country.

For the FBI, it seems, decipheringanything that isnt completely spelled outfor them is well nigh impossible. So hewouldnt take the test for weeks, then tookit and failed, and then denied working forthe Mossadin this country, at any rate.As John Stossel, Barbara Walters 20/20colleague, ceaselessly reiterated: Gimme abreak!

The tale of the White Van, as told by 20/20, raises more questions than it settles.For what about those polygraphs? We aretold that some of the Israeli detaineeswere given as many as seven lie-detectortests. Why so many? The five weredetained for over two months, 40 days of itin solitary confinement, time andopportunity enough for an awful lot ofquestions. Perhaps some of the answerscontain a clue to help unravel the centralunsolved mystery of 9/11, which is this:

They tracked down one ofthe original witnesses, went all the way toIsrael to hear the young Israelis denials,and hauled out ABCs highly-paid petexpert to spin away the obvious. But,somehow, they failed to do the elementarysort of research that wouldve mandatedonly a trip to their local library. There theymight have read this astonishing story thatappeared in the September 12, 2001Bergen Record, which describes the 5Israeli detainees picked up 8 hours after theWTC attack as carrying maps linkingthem to the blasts:

Sources close to the investigation saidthey found other evidence linking the mento the bombing plot. There are maps of thecity in the car with certain placeshighlighted the source said. U.S. District Judge Robert M. Takasugiin Los Angeles ruled against the JusticeDepartment in the little-noticed decisionlast week, declaring the 1996 lawunconstitutional on its face since it doesnot allow the suspect groups to challengethe terrorist designation.

We obviously disagree with thisparticular ruling said Justice Departmentspokesman Bryan Sierra in Washington.We have not yet decided if we willappeal. While the groups may be basedabroad entirely and formed by foreigncitizens, the judge said the terroristdesignation without a hearing makes itunconstitutional to prosecute Americansfor aiding them.

The judge threw out a JusticeDepartment case against seven Americansupporters of an Iranian exile group, thePeoples Mujahedin. The PeoplesMujahedin is one of 33 groups listed asForeign Terrorist Organizations in the May

2001 State Department report Patterns OfGlobal Terrorism.

While the Peoples Mujahedin haspersuaded many in the Congress that itsmembers are legitimate freedom fightersopposed to clerical rule in Iran, the StateDepartment said the groups army, based inIraq, killed Americans in the 1970s andstill conducts terror attacks inside Iran.

The group, also calling itself theNational Council of Resistance, hascollected money in U.S. airports byshowing pictures of injured and starvingIranians. The U.S. government has said themoney went for the military units in Iraqrather than humanitarian needs.

The case against American Taliban JohnWalker Lindh, captured in northernAfghanistan, is one of several cases basedon the 1996 law held unconstitutional. OnFriday, a court in Charlotte, NC, convictedtwo Lebanese brothers on charges ofviolating the law by helping to channelfunds from tobacco smuggling to theLebanese militant group Hezbollah.

Muhammad Hammoud and his brother,Chawki Hammoud, face life in prison underthe law. State Department off icialsdeclined to comment on the effect of theruling, referring calls to the JusticeDepartment.

Mr. Sierra said: Im not aware of animmediate effect of the rulingor of anystay of cases or delaying cases. He said:District court rulings are not applied toother cases immediately, and would nothave the effect of shutting down othercases right now.

Even if the ruling is upheld, the U.S.government has other instruments to blockfunds from terrorist groups and preventthem from using the United States as abase, said one State Department official,speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Executive Order 13224, issued byPresident Bush after September 11, freezesassets of some 200 individuals and entitiesin concurrence with the attorney generaland the Treasury Department. The TerroristExclusion List, which is designated by thesecretary of state under the Patriot Act,allows the U.S. Immigration andNaturalization Service to block entry to theUnited States.

However, there was some concern thoseorders could also prove unconstitutionalfor the same reason Judge Takasugi foundfault with the 1996 anti-terrorism lawthey fail to give the groups notice or toallow them the right to challenge thedesignation in a hearing. Its not entirelyclear what will be the effects [of the ruling]on other designations said the StateDepartment official.

He gave us some statistics about howmuch the occurrences of random violencehave escalated over recent years, and itsterrible. Something like 99% of us will beexposed to, or become a victim of, aviolent crime.

1. The three reasons women are easytargets for random acts of violence are:

(a) Lack of AwarenessYou MUSTknow where you are and whats going onaround you;

(b) Body LanguageKeep your headup, swing your arms, stand straight;

(c) Wrong Place, Wrong TimeDONTwalk alone in an alley or drive alone in abad neighborhood at night.

2. Women have a tendency to get into

their cars after shopping, eating, working,etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, ormaking a list, etc.). DONT DO THIS! Thepredator will be watching you, and this isthe perfect opportunity for him to get inthe passenger side, put a gun to your head,and tell you where to go. AS SOON ASYOU GET INTO YOUR CAR, LOCK THEDOORS AND LEAVE.

A few notes about getting into your carin a parking lot, or parking garage:

(a) Be aware: look around you, look intoyour car, at the passenger side floor, and inthe back seat;

(b) If a big van is parked next to yourdrivers side door, enter your car from thepassenger door. Most serial killers attacktheir victims by pulling them into theirvans while the women are attempting to getinto their cars.

Researchers admit the software could bemisused. Images of politicians could bemanipulated to say somethingembarrassing. Criminals could threateninnocent people with extortion orblackmail. All kinds of fabricated videoscould wind up on the Internet.

There comes a point at which you raisethe level of distrust to where it is hard tocommunicate through the mediumanymore said Kathleen Hall Jamieson,dean of the Annenberg School forCommunication at the University ofPennsylvania.

For many years, Poggio has beenstudying techniques that would allowcomputers to learn from experience.Research on the new technology is beingconducted in his lab by a team headed byTony Ezzat, a graduate student in electricalengineering and computer science.

Previously, researchers concentrated oncreating a virtual model of a persons face,then using a computer to form digitalimages of it as it changes shape. But thenew software uses artificial intelligencetechniques to teach the computer how apersons face moves during speech.

The researchers record a person speakinga range of words and phrases whilesimultaneously filming the speakers face.Capturing these images and sounds takestwo to four minutes.

The software breaks up the video into 46separate still shots, each showing adifferent mouth shape. Likewise, it breaksthe recorded speech into dozens ofdifferent sounds. Finally, it learns to matchthe sounds with the pictures and assemblean image sequence that conforms with therecorded speech.

The researchers are scheduled to presenta paper describing the work at Siggraph,the worlds top computer graphicsconference, in San Antonio this July.

So far, the realistic animation works onlyif the subject remains fairly still and islooking straight into the camera. Butresearchers hope theyll soon be able tomake videos work in three dimensions, sothat faces can be viewed from all angles.[end quoting]
