INTRODUCTIONWE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE TASK TO DESIGN A SMALL LAW FIRM WITH A MEDIUM/HIGH BUDGET
FOR A HARVEY SPECTOR WHO IS LOOKING TO OPEN AN OTTAWA LOCATION AT THE CENTER OF
ITS DOWNTOWN CORE. THE CLIENT HAS GIVEN A DETAILED VISION OF WHAT HE WOULD LIKE TO
INCORPORATE IN THE DESIGN OF HIS NEW LAW FIRM.

BACKGROUNDCLIENT PROFILEGENSLER OTTAWA HAS BEEN CONTRACTED TO DESIGN A SMALL SIZED LAW FIRM FOR SPECTER &
ASSOCIATES. OUR CLIENTS, HARVEY SPECTER, HAS PROVIDED A LIST OF CRITERIA AND REQUIRE-
MENTS TO FOLLOW DURING THE DESIGN PROCESS. THE BUDGET FOR THIS PROJECT IS MEDIUM/
HIGH AND THE FIRM IS GOING TO FOCUS ON CORPORATE HIGH PROFILE CASES LOCALLY AND
ABROAD AND WILL REPRESENT THE 21ST CENTURY LAW PRACTICE.
HARVEY IS A WELL-KNOWN LAWYER IN NEW YORK CITY AND WANTS TO PROJECT A SENSE OF
“AWE” AND INSPIRE CONFIDENCE IN HIS CLIENTS. HE WOULD LIKE US TO FOCUS ON A CANA-
DIAN BASED DESIGN AND USE ONLY CANADIAN MADE PRODUCTS –SUCH AS (TERNION). THE
SENIOR PARTNER AND HIS TEAM OF LAW PROFESSIONALS WILL BE WORKING LONG HOURS AND
REQUIRE THE SPACE TO BE COMFORTABLE AND PERSONALITY PERSONALIZED TO IN ORDER TO

BUILDING SPACE PROFILE70 LAURIER AVENUE WEST, TYPICAL FLOOR.
THIS BUILDING IS RECTANGULAR WITH THE ELEVATOR AND AMENITIES LOCATED AT THE CEN-
TER CORE OF THE BUILDING. ALL 4 EXTERIOR WALLS HAVE WINDOWS WITH THE NORTH SIZE
DIRECTED TOWARD THE PARLIAMENT. THERE IS SMALLER COLUMN GRID ON THIS FLOOR PLAN
WHICH WILL REQUIRE MORE CAREFUL PLANNING OF SPACES SO THAT THE COLUMNS DO NOT
OBSTRUCT THE SPACE. THERE ARE CURRENTLY NO WALLS BLOCKING OFF THE ELEVATORS AND
STAIRS, WHICH GIVES US MORE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A MORE PERSONALIZED SPACE WITH
LOTS OF NATURAL LIGHT.
220 LAURIER AVENUE WEST, TYPICAL FLOOR.
THIS BUILDING IS SQUARE SHAPED WITH A CORE CENTER FOR ELEVATORS, STAIRS, AND AME-
NITIES. THIS FLOOR PLAN HAS 3 EXTERIOR WALLS WITH WINDOWS THAT HAVE A VIEW TOWARD
THE PARLIAMENT BUT ONE WALL WITH NO WINDOWS AT ALL. IT DOES, HOWEVER, HAVE A
LARGE COLUMN GRID, WHICH REMOVES SOME OBSTACLE IN THE PLANNING PROCESS AND
ALLOWS US TO BE MORE CREATIVE WITH OUR SPACE. THE GRID ALSO HAS SOME EXISTING
WALLS SEPARATING THE ROOM INTO 3 SUITS AND A HALLWAY THAT HAS TWO DIFFERENT EXITS
FROM THE ENTRANCE. THIS COULD BE BENEFICIAL WHEN SEPARATING PRIVATE AND PUBLIC
SPACES BUT COULD ALSO LIMIT OUR DESIGN IDEAS DUE TO EXISTING WALLS.

CANADIAN CLIMATE AND AESTHETIC, WE WILL CREATE A COMFORTABLE YET CONFIDENT
ENVIRONMENT FOR THE EMPLOYEES AND THE FIRM’S CLIENTS. DUE TO THE NATURE OF THE
BUSINESS, THE DESIGN WILL INCORPORATE THE NECESSARY PRIVATE SPACES WHILE STILL PRO-
VIDING AND EFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COLLABORATIVE SPACES TO PROMOTE TEAM WORK AND
A HEALTHIER WORK SPACE.
IN BRIEF, THE SENIOR PARTNER WILL HAVE A WINDOW OFFICE NEXT TO THE DIRECTOR OF OP-
ERATIONS. PARTNERS AND ASSOCIATES WILL EACH GET THEIR OWN OFFICE WITH A COLLAB-
ORATIVE SPACE IN BETWEEN. THE PARALEGALS HAVE BEEN SEPARATED IN A COLLABORATIVE
ENVIRONMENT IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE LIBRARY DUE TO THE FACT THAT THEY WORK VERY
LOUDLY. THE RECEPTION AREA HAS BEEN PLACE NEXT TO THE CONFERENCE ROOM WHILE
KEEPING IT ACCESSIBLE TO THE EMPLOYEES AND PRIVATE FROM THE CLIENTS WHEN THEY FIRST
ENTER THE SPACE. ALL OTHER STAFF MEMBERS HAVE BEEN PLACED IN A COOPERATIVE ENVI-
RONMENT THROUGHOUT THE OFFICE WHILE STILL BEING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE LIBRARY
AND LUNCH ROOM. AFTER CAREFULLY COMPLETING THE PROJECT ANALYSIS, IT HAS BECOME
