Cat C6.6 ACERT. The Cat C6.6 is a6.6 liter (403 in3) displacement, in-linesix cylinder engine. The C6.6 utilizesACERT Technology, a series ofCaterpillar engineered innovations thatprovides advanced electronic control,precise fuel delivery and refined airmanagement, resulting in outstandingperformance and lower emissions.

The C6.6 with ACERT Technologyoffers a compact design with big, heavyduty engine features for outstandingdurability, reliability and performance.The C6.6 incorporates a new cross flowcylinder head design, 4 valve head andan ADEM A4 electronic controller.The C6.6 also features a proven cylinderblock, pistons and crankshaft.

Electronic Control ADEM A4.The Advanced Diesel EngineManagement – Electronic ControlModule consistently monitors importantengine conditions and functions. It usessensors throughout the engine to regulatefuel delivery and all other engine systemsthat require input to manage load andperformance. The ADEM A4 controlleris the brain behind engine responsiveness,self-diagnosis, controlling emissionsand fuel economy.

Air Management. Air managementis a key concept in optimizing engineperformance and controlling emissions.Engines must breathe clean cool air inorder to perform. To aid this, the C6.6uses a turbocharger fitted with a smartwaste gate to give precise and reliablecontrol of the boost pressure. A newcross-flow design in the cylinder headfacilitates air movement, while tightertolerances between the piston andcylinder wall reduce blow by gases.

Fuel System. Through multiple injectionfuel delivery, fuel is introduced inthe combustion chamber in a numberof precisely controlled microbursts.Injecting fuel in this way allows forprecise shaping of the combustion cyclewhile reducing engine sound levels

Fuel Pump. The C6.6 uses an oil-lubricated high-pressure fuel pumpto feed a common fuel rail. By usingan oil-lubricated fuel pump, the C6.6has been designed to be more tolerantof alternative fuels.

Fuel Priming Pump. An electrical fuelpriming pump is located between thefuel tank and the combined waterseparator/primary fuel filter. The electricpriming pump eliminates the need topre-fill or manually prime filters aftera change, thus reducing contaminationand improving injector life.

Engine Idle Management. The EngineIdle Management System (EIMS)maximizes fuel efficiency and providesflexibility in managing idle speedsfor specific application requirements.Four idle control speeds are available.

POWERSHIFT TRANSMISSION.The 938H continues to use powershifttransmission technology proven onprevious series. The countershaftpowershift transmission features heavy-duty components to handle the toughestapplications. Built-in electronic controlsenhance productivity and durability.

Control Throttle Shifting. Control ThrottleShifting regulates engine speed duringhigh-energy directional and gear changesfor smoother shifting and longercomponent life.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control.Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC) system modulates clutchesindividually to improve shift quality,component life and operator comfort.Adjustment is simplified with allsolenoid valves externally mountedon top of the transmission housing.

AXLES. The 938H axles are designed byCaterpillar for durability in all operatingconditions. The front axle is rigidlymounted to the frame to support theweight of the wheel loader and withstandinternal torque loads as well as externalforces encountered throughout operation.

The rear axle is designed to allow ± 12°oscillation. All four wheels remain onthe ground over uneven terrain providingexcellent stability and traction.

Integrated Braking System. The Catexclusive Integrated Braking Systemreduces axle oil temperatures andimproves transmission neutralizersmoothness. IBS has a direct impacton durability of the axles and brakesespecially in applications involvinglong distances and/or heavy braking.

RADIATOR. Brazed aluminumconstruction provides a stronger jointfor maximum durability and resistanceto leaks. The 6-fins-per-inch designdecreases the chance of blockageand plugging.

STRUCTURES. The articulated framedesign of the 938H features a durableplate engine frame and two plate loadertower that is robotically welded.Robotic welding creates frame jointswith deep plate penetration welds andexcellent fusion for maximum strengthand durability.

Engine End Frame (EEF). The 938H usesa proven solid plate engine end framewhich provides a strong, rigid structurethat resists twisting and evenly distributesimpact loads. The result is an extremelysolid mounting platform for the engine,transmission, axle, ROPS and otheraccessories.

Hitch. The distance between the upperand lower hitch plates is an importantcontributor to machine performanceand component life. The Caterpillarhitch design provides excellent loaddistribution and bearing life. Both theupper and lower hitch pins pivot ondouble tapered roller bearings –improving durability by distributingboth vertical and horizontal loads overa larger surface area. The wide openingalso provides excellent service access.

Non-Engine End Frame (NEEF).The non-engine end frame provides asolid mounting base for the front axle,lift arms, lift cylinders and tilt cylinder.The fabricated, two-plate loader towerdesign reduces material packing underthe lift cylinders while absorbing theforces associated with loading, twistingand material handling.

Counterweight. The two-piececounterweight is integrated into the938H design and provides addedprotection for the lights by incorporatingthem into the top of the structure.

Linkage. The 938H linkage is a single-tilt Z-bar design. Z-bar linkage generatesexcellent breakout force and good rackback angle for better bucket loadingand load retention.

Lift arms are solid steel, providingsuperior strength with an excellent frontend viewing area. The proven designoffers excellent dump clearanceand reach.

LOAD SENSING HYDRAULICS. The 938Hfeatures a load sensing hydraulic systemthat supplies flow and pressure for theimplements only upon demand, and onlyin the amounts necessary to perform theneeded work thus providing a moreefficient loader.

With the new S3PC Priority ProportionalPressure Compensation Valve, implementcontrol is improved over the previoussystem – raise/lower and rack back/dumpcan be operated simultaneously.

Operators will notice enhanced easeof operation, more rimpull into the pileand a 16% increase in lift force.

NEW! DIFFERENTIAL LOCK. Maximizeproductivity with the new hydrauliclocking front differential. This standardfeature provides operators with theconfidence to maneuver through poorunderfoot conditions with ‘on the fly’engagement.

A Caterpillar exclusive, the optionalautomatic front/rear locking differentialcollects input from sensors throughoutthe loader and adapts tractive effortto meet operating requirements.

CONSTANT NET HORSEPOWER.On many competitive machines, grosshorsepower is constant, meaning thatnet engine power available for actualwork will vary based on demands madefrom parasitic sources, such as airconditioning or cooling fans.

The Cat C6.6 engine is electronicallyconfigured to provide constant nethorsepower at full parasitic loadenhancing productivity and improvingfuel efficiency.

On-Demand Fan. With electronic controlof the variable speed on-demand fan,temperature levels of the engine coolant,transmission oil, hydraulic oil and airinlet manifold are constantly monitored.This data is used to control and maintainfan speed at the level necessary tomaintain normal system temperatures.Controlled fan speed improves fuelefficiency, lowers noise levels andreduces radiator plugging.

Isolated Cooling System. The 938Hcooling system is isolated from theengine compartment by a non-metallicshield. The hydraulically driven, variablespeed fan draws in clean air from therear of the machine and exhausts it outthe sides and top of the hood. The endresults are optimal cooling efficiency,increased fuel efficiency, less radiatorplugging and reduced operator soundlevels.

COUNTERSHAFT POWERSHIFTTRANSMISSION. The electroniccountershaft powershift transmissionwith automatic shift capability isdesigned and built by Caterpillar.The very responsive, full-power speedand directional changes provide excellentcycle times and productivity.

Fuel Economy Mode. Match transmissionshifting patterns to machine applicationrequirements. The Fuel Economy Mode(within Messenger) provides operatorswith the ability to choose between threedifferent shift modes in order to maximizeshift quality and fuel efficiency.

RIDE CONTROL. The optional RideControl System improves ride,performance and load retention whentraveling over rough terrain. Operatorsgain confidence moving at higherspeeds in load and carry operationsdecreasing cycle times and increasingproductivity.

AUTOLUBE. The optional CaterpillarAutolube System provides precise,automatic lubrication of pins andbushings – during loader operation.Automatic lubrication reduces time spenton daily maintenance and downtime forunplanned repairs due to inadequategreasing – improving productivity.

HYDRAULIC SERVICE CENTER.Transmission and hydraulic oil filtersare located in the Hydraulic ServiceCenter, behind the hinged, right-sideaccess ladder. The hydraulic oil tankcan be drained from this locationusing the access port.

ELECTRIC SERVICE CENTER. A lockablecompartment located just below theleft side access platform contains keyelectrical components such as the remotejump-start receptacle, battery disconnectswitch, circuit breakers and hoodactuation switch. The maintenance freebatteries are conveniently located underthe electric service center.

NEW! MULTI-PIECE AXLE. With theintroduction of Caterpillar’s new multi-piece axles, service brakes and finaldrives are located outboard and provideeasy access when service is required.

GROUND LEVEL GREASE POINTS.Grease fittings are grouped on the rightside of the machine in two convenientlocations thus facilitating easy lubricationof vital components throughout themachine.

AUTOLUBE. Reduce time spent on dailymaintenance and downtime for unplannedrepairs due to inadequate greasing withthe optional Caterpillar AutomaticLubrication System. Precise lubricationof pins and bushings at specific intervalsimproves component wear and reducesground contamination from excessivegreasing.

S•O•S SERVICES. Sampling valves onthe 938H allow quick access to engine,transmission and hydraulic oils forS•O•S analysis. Oil change intervalsand other services can be optimizedaccording to your work schedule,reducing downtime and managingexpenses.

REMOTE PRESSURE TAPS. Pressure tapsfor key systems are grouped and centrallylocated throughout the machine andhelp facilitate quick diagnostics.

BRAKE WEAR INDICATORS. Axles areequipped with standard brake wearindicators, allowing a technician toeasily determine when it is necessaryto service the brakes.

SIGHT GAUGES. Well-protected,yet easily visible sight gauges for thetransmission, hydraulic oil and radiatorcoolant allow easy daily checks whilereducing the risk of contaminantsentering the systems.

ENGINE COMPARTMENT ACCESS.

A single mechanical lift cylinderwith manual back-up opens the hood.The tilting hood provides excellentaccess to the engine and coolingcompartments and if necessary, theentire hood can be removed withthe built-in lift points.

With the hood closed, quick checks ofthe engine oil level, coolant site gaugeand air inlet indicator can be completedthrough the side service door.

ECOLOGY DRAINS. Engine, transmissionand hydraulic oils can be easily drainedwith standard-equipment ecology drains.An axle oil ecology drain is optional.

ELECTRIC PRIMING PUMP. An electricfuel priming pump located on the primaryfuel filter base eliminates the need topre-fill or manually prime filters after achange, eliminating engine contamination.

COOLING SYSTEM. Cooling systemaccess for clean-out and maintenanceis outstanding. The perforated andcorrugated grill minimizes debris build-up and swings out for easy cleaningand access to the cooling cores.

The full-width air conditioning condenserand oil cooler cores swing out 45° toallow easy cleaning of the rear radiatorface. An access panel located on theright side of the radiator support structureprovides access to the front face of theradiator and ATAAC cores for easycleaning.

Seat. The durable seat adjusts 6-waysto accommodate all sized operators.The seat features an automotive stylelumbar support for maximum comfort.The Cat C-500 Series Comfort air-suspension seat is optional as is aheated backrest and seat cushion.

Implement Pod. The newly restyledimplement pod provides superior comfortthrough the full length adjustablearmrest. Standard transmission F-N-Rswitch allows operators to keep theirhand on the implement control leverswhile making directional shifts.An optional joystick with integratedF-N-R switch is available and replacesthe lift and tilt levers.

VISIBILITY. The 938H offers excellentvisibility to the front and rear of themachine. Distortion-free flat glassstretches to the floor of the cab forexcellent visibility to the bucket.Wet-arm wipers on both front and backkeep the windows clean in any condition.

Rear Vision Camera. An optional rearvision camera is available to clearlymonitor movement behind the wheelloader.

Lighting Packages. In addition to thestandard roading lights, optional lightingpackages are available for low-lightapplications. Optional auxiliary halogenor High Intensity Discharge (HID) cablights provide exceptional lighting fornight work. A rotating beacon isavailable as a safety feature.

ENTRY AND EXIT. A ladder withaggressive tread pattern keeps debrisbuild-up to a minimum. The ladder isat a 5° forward incline for easy entryand exit.

The main cab door opens a full 180° andlatches in place to allow safe navigationto the rear of the machine.

The right side door opens 10°, orcompletely for secondary exit simplyby pulling a pin. A full-length ladderon the right side facilitates safe exitif needed.

Steering. Caterpillar’s low effort loadsensing steering directs power throughthe steering system only when needed.The new hand metering unit and priorityvalve provide operators with fullsteering and multi-function capabilitya low engine RPM’s. The combinedsteering column and instrument paneltilt for maximum operator comfort.

Controls. Key machine controls areconveniently located within arms reachand allow better efficiency whileminimizing operator fatigue.

A variety of machine controls are alsocontained within the Messenger display.By accessing various menus, an operatorcan tailor the machine to fit operatingstyle and application. For multi-shiftoperations, personalized settings foreach operator can be established andstored for maximum uptime and comfort.
