Recent cases of school bullying have become a cause for concern in Malaysia. In a very strong public

statement, The Minister of Education warned bullies that harsh 9 will be taken against them and rightly

declared that bullying was not acceptable.

Emotionally, victims 10 bullying often suffer feelings of great distress and fear whenever they are in

school. The overwhelming fear they 11 can also lead to absenteeism from school in an attempt to escape

    the bullying.

According 12 experts, victims of bullying often experience a drop in self esteem. Many victims blame

themselves. They believe that it is 13 own weakness that causes them to be picked on by the bullies.

Bullying behavior can 14 a childs learning experience. When children feel that they are under

constant threat of being hurt and humiliated, they cannot fully realise their academic potential. For meaningful

education to occur, children must be given 15 environment that is perceived to be safe physically,

emotionally and intellectually. Only when children feel safe and secure, will they adopt an open attitude to

    knowledge.

Sam and Maria were a happily married couple. They lived in a nice home and had two

lovely children, a boy and a girl. Sam had a good job and had just been asked to go on abusiness trip to another city and would be gone for several days.

It was decided that Maria would go along on the trip for a much needed break. They hired

a reliable woman to care for the children and went on the trip. The trip was initially scheduled

for six days, but Sam managed to complete his work earlier than unexpected. As they were both

missing the children, the couple decided to return home earlier than they had planned.

As they drove into their neighbourhood, they felt glad to be back. Just then they noticed

smoke, and they drove off their usual route to see what it was. They found a home in flames.

Maria said, Oh well it isnt our fire, lets go home.

But Sam drove closer and exclaimed, That home belongs to Adam who works at my

office. He wouldnt be off work yet, maybe there is something we could do. Besides, our kids

are friends with his children. We really must stop and see if we can help.

It has nothing to do with us, protested Maria. You have your good clothes on. Lets just

leave and not get any closer.

But Sam drove up and stopped. They were both horror stricken to see the whole house in

flames. A woman on the lawn was screaming hysterically, The children! Get the children!

Sam grabbed her by the shoulder saying, Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the

    children are!

In the basement, sobbed the woman, Down the hall and to the left.

In spite of Marias protests Sam grabbed the water hose and soaked his clothes, put

his wet handkerchief on his head and bolted for the basement which was full of smoke and

scorching hot. He found the door and grabbed two children, holding one under each arm.As he left he could hear some more whimpering. He delivered the two badly frightened

and nearly suffocated children into waiting arms and filled his lungs with fresh air and started

back asking how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Maria

grabbed his arm and screamed, Sam! Dont go back! Its suicide! That house will cave in any

    second!

But he shook her off and went back by feeling his way down the smoke-filled hallway and

into the room. It seemed an eternity before he found both children and started back. They were

all three coughing and he stooped low to get what available air he could.

As he stumbled up the endless steps, it occurred to him that there was something

strangely familiar about the little bodies clinging to him. When at last they came out into the

sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children. The baby-sitter had left them at this home to play with their friends while she did some

    shopping.

A very good morning to the Principal, teachers and fellowstudents. I am humbled by this opportunity to speak at todays

    assembly.

As we all know, our beloved Puan Maimun will be retiring

at the end of the week. She has been a teacher in this school

for the past fteen years. Besides teaching English, she has

been the head of the Girl Guides Unit and an advisor for the

English Language Society and Counselling Club. During her

tenure here she has not only carried out her duties impeccably

but she has gone the extra mile on many occasions to help

    her students.

She will perhaps be best remembered for pioneering

the Holiday Classroom programme in which she gave free

English classes for all the students during the school holidays.

This was truly a noble gesture as many others in her positioncould have easily charged tuition fees. Her dedication and

enthusiasm caught on and many of her colleagues came

on board to volunteer their services in the various other

examination subjects. Thus the students of our school have

been enjoying free tuition classes during the holidays and I am

proud to say that many of us have improved under her tutelage.

As a teacher, she has carried out her duties with

diligence and enthusiasm. She has endeavoured to enhance

the learning experience of every student that she has taught.

Her interesting teaching methods have been both memorable

and enlightening. She also made efforts to constantly upgrade

her knowledge by attending courses and seminars.

Puan Maimun has not only motivated her students

to achieve academic excellence, she also instilled theimportance of developing good characteristics. She taught us

that a good education was the foundation to a successful life.

She instilled in us the importance of using our education to

contribute towards society and the nation.

She has reached out to many troubled students and

counselled them during their difcult times. She has spent

many hours after school visiting parents of troubled children

in an effort to resolve problems faced by her students.

I dare say that we have been blessed with a teacher of

her calibre and the students of this school are truly grateful

for all that she has done. Puan Maimun is truly an inspiration,

not only to her students, but also her fellow teachers. Those

of us considering the teaching profession would do well to

remember her and emulate her teaching style.Puan Maimun, we wish you all the best for your retirement

and we hope that you will come back to visit us from time to

time. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you and goodbye.
