Specifications of feed ingredients

• Specifications are defined as a group of standards given

by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or Indian

Standards Institute(ISI) to different feed ingredients

for feeding of animals.

• These are essential for feed quality assurance

programme.

• And serve as basis for ration formulation.

Specifications for Compounded feeds for young stock

Two types:

• Calf Starter Meal:- A meal for calves to be made

available from the age of approximately 8 weeks and

to be fed up to approximately 26 weeks.

• Calf Growth Meal:- A meal for calves to be introduced

gradually into the diet from the age of approximately

26 weeks and to be fed up to approximately 108

weeks.

Specifications for Poultry feeds

Chicken feeds shall be of six types

• Broiler Starter Feed (BSF) :- an all – mash ration to be

fed to chicks, intended for meat production, up to the

age of 4 weeks.

• Broiler Finisher Feed (BFF):-an all- mash ration to be

fed to chicks, intended for meat production, up to the

age of 6 weeks.

• Chick Feed (CF):- an all-mash ration to be fed to chicks, not

intended for meat production, up to the age of 8 weeks.

• Growing Chicken Feed (GCF) :- A ration to be fed to

growing chickens from 8-20 weeks or until laying

commences.

• Laying Chicken Feed (LCF) :- A ration to be fed to laying

birds from 20 weeks onwards or after laying commences.

• Broiler Chicken Feed (BCF) :- A ration to be fed to breeding

chicken.

Specification for pig feeds

Types of Pig feeds:

a) Pig Starter / Creep feed :- A ration to be fed up to 15

kg live mass when the litter is with sow

b) Pig growth meal :- A ration to be fed from weaning to

35 kg live mass.

c) Pig finishing / Breeding meal :- A ration to be fed to

pigs over 35 kg live mass.

Specifications for Maize bran

Two types

• Coarse bran :- Consists mostly of the outer coating of

the maize kernel

• Fine bran :- Consists largely of the fine fibrous

material left as a residue after sieving the slurry

subsequent to the removal of germ and coarse bran.

Specifications for Fish meal

• Depending upon their chemical composition two

grades: Grade 1 and Grade-2

• Preparation:-The fish meal shall be prepared by

cooking the raw material or by heat-treating the dried

fish in a steam-jacket cooker, pressing the cooked mass

if necessary, drying and pulverizing the treated

material to the required mesh size.

the decorticated cottonseed oil cake. or directly from

decorticated cottonseed after a certain preliminary

treatment.

• The meal shall have been subjected to heat and steam

treatment under controlled and regulated conditions so

as to remove traces of solvent.

• Solvent-extracted sal seed meal shall have been

subjected to heat and steam treatment under controlled

and regulated conditions so as to remove traces of

solvent.
