Through this competition, we inspire teens to understand why design matters by researching, representing, and redesigning the built environment to solve challenges that are personal and place-based.

2017 COMPETITION PARTNERS The 2017 Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition is partnered with firms, non-profits, and studios that are all currently working on Chicago focused issues. Each division is partnered with an organization that helped to define the challenge and will serve on the jury evaluating division entries. The Metropolitan Planning Council spent the past year scouring existing plans and working with residents and river enthusiasts to design a long-term vision and action agenda for Chicago’s 100-plus miles of rivers. Their collective goal for 2040 is that Chicago’s rivers will be inviting, productive, and living. Design a community center and public space on a barge that can be docked along the river.

In 2013, Chicago Public Schools closed 49 elementary schools, many of which are still vacant today. Borderless Studio & Archeworks are collaborating to explore the future community roles of these closed school sites through the lens of Public Interest Design. Identify one of the 3 schools (Drake, Overton, or West Pullman) and redesign the open space around the school buildings to become an active asset to the surrounding community.

Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion (CPHP) provides high quality nutrition education, health promotion, and disease prevention services for eligible families in Chicago. CPHP has identified an important opportunity in their partner community gardens: design ways to easily teach classes. On an empty Chicago lot (25’ x 125’), design an intergenerational community garden that also acts as a teaching space.

The American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) is an organization that unites, educates, and advances the Chicago design community. As a physical structure and a visual element, signage crosses boundaries between architecture and graphic design. Including only a name and graphic illustrations, design a sign to be placed in a neighborhood/town that represents the identity, history, or residents of that area.

Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB) is an architecture, interior design, and planning firm that is recognized as one of the nation’s leading designers of urban residential buildings. One of the current trends in urban residential design is “micro-units”, small, studio-apartments. Design a single piece of furniture that combines the function of at least three pieces of furniture.

Chicago’s diagonal streets are an innovation that cut through the rigid city grid and help save people time and money. Capture the identity of one of Chicago’s many diagonal streets through a series of photographs. Showcase the culture, history, and/or people that make this street unique and important.

EXPO CHICAGO, the International Exposition of Contemporary & Modern Art, has established the city of Chicago as a preeminent art fair destination. As a city with a dedication to public art, Chicago’s Cultural Plan outlines a vision for art and culture that incorporated art into projects across the city. Design a public mural for an underutilized viaduct that is at least 9 feet tall by 24 feet wide that will beautify and improve the public environment for area residents as a community-based work of art.

The Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition Boat Cruise will be August 11, 2017 at 3:30pm. A reservation link will be sent to winners. RSVP is required.
