NON-RESIDENT DONORS
HOW WE DID IT
When the Board of Directors of the Sherwood Forest Association learned in early August of 2014 that we had
less than a month to devise a fundraising campaign and collect $65,000 if we were to have new streetlights
consistent with the age and architecture of our historic neighborhood, there were more than a few people who
told us it simply could not be done. $65,000 was too much money, and less than a month was too little time to
try to raise it.
Thank you, residents of Sherwood Forest for proving the doubters wrong. Nearly 200 people stepped up to say,
“I treasure this neighborhood and I believe in its future.” Our association president, Maurice Telesford,
presented our check to the Public Lighting Authority right on time, and we had enough money left to pay all
residual expenses related to the campaign and to plan a modest celebration to highlight the generosity of all of
our donors. The celebration is planned for late spring of 2015.
As an incentive to contribute, we offered residents the opportunity to “adopt” a streetlight and have a stainless
steel plaque with their names or other message affixed to the light pole they adopted. The cost of adopting a
streetlight was $650, the amount the neighborhood contributed to the cost of each light. Almost 80 people
chose to adopt a streetlight. The plaques are ready and will be affixed to the poles in early spring, as soon as
temperatures permit.
As a further incentive to contribute, we offered residents who contributed $850 or more “photographic
sketches” of their homes in a choice of three sizes. The sketches were matted and ready for framing. Thirty
families contributed at a level entitling them to a sketch. The sketches were created and contributed by
Sherwood Forest resident photographer Gordon Rodwan
Throughout the fall of 2014, residents watched with interest as new cable was installed under ground, new
lights went up and old lights were hauled away. (See below for a photographic record of the installation
process.)
On December 17, 2014, after all the lights were installed, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan came to Sherwood
Forest to hold a press conference on Canterbury Road, along with Odis Jones, CEO of the Public Lighting
Authority, and Dr. Lorna Thomas, Board Chair of the Public Lighting Authority. With residents and press in
attendance, Sherwood Forest Association President Maurice Telesford thanked the Mayor and the PLA for
facilitating this project, and the Mayor told us, “This is the way things ought to work.”
Sherwood Forest did not accomplish this alone. A local realtor made one of the most generous contributions.
Former residents from other cities and states sent checks, including one former resident who has not lived in
Sherwood Forest for almost 50 years. Our friends in other historic neighborhoods, specifically Palmer Woods
and Indian Village, sent contributions. The media decided that there was a story in this campaign, and we were
featured on all the local television channels, WDET Radio, Crain’s Detroit Business, Michigan Chronicle and
other media outlets.
The real story here was not about a small Detroit neighborhood that wanted new streetlights; the real story was
about the commitment of the residents of this community. The real story was the woman who brought us a
check for $650 the day after learning that her pay was about to be cut, or the family that contributed to the
campaign one week after moving into their new Sherwood Forest home, or the 90-year-old resident who said he
had lived in Sherwood Forest for more than 50 wonderful years and would not stop supporting it now.
THANK YOU, EVERYONE. We are in awe of what we as a community have done and can do. As we
contemplate our beautifully lighted streets, let us congratulate one another on a job well done – and look ahead
to a bright future.

WHAT OTHERS SAID
“This is really a story about neighborhood pride and commitment.”
Guy Gordon, Local 4 News, August 22, 2014
“Having the option to cover the costs of the upgrade strikes a great balance. After all, the Detroit Historic
Commission polices what homeowners can do with the exterior of their houses – from landscaping to paint
color – so it is realistic that they would want the historic streetscape maintained, as well . . . So the PLA has
been meeting with the city’s neighborhood associations, talking to them about their options. Sherwood Forest is
one of the areas taking up the challenge of bringing beautiful lights to its residents.”
From Crain’s Detroit Business of August 25, 2014
“The Sherwood Forest Association leadership came to us and indicated they wanted to upgrade their light poles
and were willing to take on the challenge of raising the additional funds. Their success speaks to the energy and
enthusiasm they put into the effort.”
From Michigan Chronicle of September 5, 2014, quoting Public Lighting Authority CEO Odis Jones
“This is a great example of how the PLA is working with individual neighborhoods to bring modern, reliable
street lighting while respecting the unique character of the community.”
Mayor Mike Duggan, speaking at December 17, 2014, press conference in Sherwood Forest
“The lights Sherwood Forest chose are a perfect fit for the neighborhood.”
From dbusiness of December 18, 2014, quoting Public Lighting Board Chair Dr. Lorna Thomas
